A costly visit to Makers Central and Record Power's Sabre 350 ;-)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

On the video I unbox and set up my new bandsaw that I bought at Makers Central 2019
Now barred from future shows by my Wife ;-)
This is not a bandsaw review or comparison between the Dewalt & Record Power, I will consider one at a later time following some workshop experience with the Sabre 350.

I am the owner of the Dewalt, and bought the Sabre 350 this week. I would say there is no comparison between the two. The Dewalt is very light in comparison, making it feeling unsecure when resawing heavier boards. The tensioning mechanism is also very week on the Dewalt compared to the Sabre 350. I would not recommand using a blade above 10 to 12mm on the Dewalt. The Sabre 350 seems to handle the 16mm stock blade very well, and I have not yet tested it with a 20mm but it guess it should handle it ok even though it would be at the limit. The table and fence, on the one hand, is light and wobbly, on the other hand solid and heavy enough for a variety of applications. The various adjustment mechanisms on the Record Power are also more robust, and more practical to use, and its overall capacity and feel of sturdiness makes it very efficient and a joy to use. When I look at the price of both machines, it makes me say that the Record Power seems well priced, and the Dewalt is completely overpriced. If someone has the room for it, I simply think there is no point in buying a machine like the Dewalt except if you can get it used in good condition for less than say 400 to 500 €/£. It would then serve well with a good blade and properly setup, but still be very limited compared to a higher class machine like the Record Power.

Agree with your points the RP Sabre is definitely more industrial. I still use the dewalt with 1/4” 6mm blades for profiling. Though I have a 19mm blade and it performed well Thanks for taking the time to watch & comment Cheers Steve

Nice bandsaw, but disappointed to see that Record Power have now removed the "Sheffield, England" slogan on their machines, to "Established 1909". We all know what that means.... :-(

GOOD Video, I'm torn between the Sabre 350 and the Axminster AT2552B. I would like to see them both in the flesh before I make a decision. I like the idea of the more powerful motor of the Sabre 350.

I’m sure you’d be pleased with either, originally I was going for a larger bandsaw the Sabre450 however the RP guys convinced me the 350 was the more versatile. At the time I also looked at Axminster bandsaws (benefits of being at a tool show) and plumped for the RP Sabre 350. Mainly due to having a pretty negative experience of an Axminster machine their pillar drill (there’s a vid on my channel) Thanks for the watch and comment. Maybe depending where you’re based see if there’s a woodworking/ tool show that both Ax & RP are at, the northern one in November at Harrogate they both usually demo. Cheers Steve

I just received my Sabre 350 and have had some regret at not getting the 450 with its bigger capacity. Would be great to hear more about why you were advised that the 350 is more versatile so I can feel better about the purchase! 😅 My workshop is really small which is why I thought the 350 was a reasonable size machine for my space, if not my desires.

Phenrica, thanks for the video. Was looking for a compare between DeWalt DW876 and the Record Sabre 350 as I cannot decide yet. Did you replace your DeWalt with the Sabre 350? Is it worth the extra money? Thxs, John

Hi John, thanks for the watch, comment and question👍🏻. The intention was to replace the dewalt as I was looking for a saw with a larger capacity, initially I was intending to get the Sabre 450 however I was dissuaded by the record power guys who suggested the 350 would better suit my needs and was a good bit cheaper. I was doing to sell the dewalt but never got round to advertising etc so I use it mainly with a small blade for profiling and metal cutting. The RP Sabre 350 is a far superior machine IMO, the cast iron table vs an extruded aluminium, the bearing guides vs harden steel blocks and quick blade change make it a far better buy. Not sure what the price difference is between the two saws but when I looked it varied between £200/£300 and the extra for the 350 bandsaw was /is well worth it. Hope that helps if you want my more info just ask. Cheers Steve ps there’s still part of me that wishes I got the Sabre 450 for just the extra capacity and why? No rationale reason really 😂
