My Kenwood TH-D72 has this function as well - menu 3S0 will let you set the Message and Bullettin groups; Message defaults are ALL, QST, CQ, KWD; Bulletin does not have any group set by default. To send the mesage to the Group you do simply by putting the group into the TO field, as you did for Yaesu. Thanks a lot and 73s

For non-Yaesu radios (and Yaesu as well) #APRSTHURSDAY demonstrates something similar. It is a message to the ANSRVR (the “Announcement” Server). Their group is called HOTG, a group they just made up, but it could a group of your radio club. Everyone subscribed to the group-gets the message. This is (was) a little known feature of APRS.

The ANSSVR is awesome but different. It utilizes the internet to move the messages....at least in part. The group text demo in the video is RF only. Different tools for different tasks. Both require the user to opt-in.

Jason, this is also commonly used on satellite passes, like the ISS digipeater. Someone can send a message to everyone within the footprint of the ISS and then reply to it. I’ve used it myself. Good stuff.

WIth Yaesu radios as long as you keep the group names 6 characters or less composing the “To” address on a message won’t mandate an SSID. Kenwood radios don’t have that restriction, all 9 characters are available for group names.

OK follow up message - from what I gather this is similar to using a tactical call sign - the APRS system will not gate it to the internet because it's not a valid call sign in the back end, meaning anything you use this for will end up being local. Also you will not receive an Ack repsonse back from the digipeter because again, it's not a valid call sign - so its essentially like blasting your message out to the world and if others have that programmed into their radio, and are within distance of the local digipeter they will hear it, but no one else will.

That’s like using your cell phone only to check the time and then going out of your way to call them lame clocks.
