So inspirational to see a perfumer like her who was also self taught. There's many people like myself who are on their self taught perfume journey because its extremely expensive and out of reach to be able to go to one of the few perfumery schools in the world. Seeing her get so far by learning by herself is very inspiring.

Starting myself. My stepson said 'where did you even get the idea to do that?'.. what looks like a fad to everyone else at the moment feels more like a growing passion to me now. Nice to be able to join the perfume making world online and hopefully achieve something

What is wrong with synthetic chemicals? I am a hobbyist perfumer and I learned the hard way that if you want to make a diverse array of imaginative and original perfumes , you need to incorporate synthetics. Otherwise it would just be the same old, citrus, flowers, and a resinous/earthy base, which is lovely, but extremely limiting. When used in tandem with naturals, synthetics make the perfume into something unique and special that simply isn't attainable from natural sources and that has been the case in perfumes since the 1800s, with the synthesis of anisaldehyde, a vanillic, floral, hawthorn-like note. Everything natural you smell is made up of chemicals. Rose for example, is, Phenyl Ethyl Alcohol, Citronellol, Geraniol, Rose Oxide, Beta-Demascone, Citral, Linalool. All synthetics are are those very same chemicals, just in their individual form, oppose to their collective form, embodied by a rose. With regards to synthetics the other layer of complexity is that both IFRA and the EU, strictly limit the use of pretty much all naturals for, ''safety reasons'. Ylang Ylang for example, you are only allowed to use 0.13% of the total fragrance volume. Rose oil is something like 1%, which simply won't do for a rose based fragrance. Perfume houses are forced,by law, to supplement the minuscule amount of rose oil with synthetic rose recreations. As mentioned, perfume houses also use synthetics to create new and innovative scents. Fahrenheit, for example, is a pure Hedione bomb, a jasmine-like aroma chemical that exalts citruses and leaves a milky, airy, jasmine, trail. It isn't as straightforward as perfume houses using synthetics to 'rip people off', there are creative and practical realities to take into account. Some of the most expensive and luxurious perfumes contain synthetics, and some of the most expensive materials are also synthetic. I'll leave it there for now. I hope my comment gives you some things to consider.

There's nothing wrong with synthetics. There's a lot you just cannot achieve without them. You're incredibly limited in what you can create with only naturals. For example, there is no natural pineapple or cherry materials for perfume. A perfumer must build those notes with aroma chemicals. Another reason is sustainability. Musks, Ambergris, sandalwoods, Vanillas, animalics are often not sustainable in natural form because they are rare or going extinct, extremely expensive to source or just straight up cruel to animals and environment. So the synthetics are available instead and smell just as good. I like using both natural and synthetics, this way you can create anything you want. The best of both worlds. A good example is this is like the difference between a chef only having 3 spices vs 100. Having only 3 spices is going to limit him to how many dishes he can create.
