DESCRIPTION: We live in a turbulent time with storms everywhere, of every size and shape. And like every generation before us, we must learn the art of surviving them, so we can help each other endure.
In his work, bestselling author and spiritual teacher Mark Nepo explores the art and practice of finding the strength to meet adversity by using the timeless teachings of the heart. Mark believes that in order to stand firm against life’s unavoidable storms, we need to know our true self, deepening our roots and solidifying our connection to all spirit and all life. Then we, like a firmly rooted tree standing unmoved in the wind, can endure the force of trials and heartbreak.
Mark Nepo and CIIS Professor and Program Chair for the MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts and Writing Cindy Shearer offer an empowering conversation on learning to overcome the storms of life. Sharing insights from his life’s work as well as his latest book, Surviving Storms, Mark articulates the heart’s process of renewal and connection with insight and accuracy. Mark discusses the fault lines we endure as a society, including our loss of relationship, the isolation of technology, and the loss of a common good, among others. He explores the nature and life of storms and unpacks the purpose of goodness. He seeks to reacquaint us with the perennial practices that restore our basic human nature and transcend our perceived differences.
Though we must each map the territories of our souls for ourselves, Mark offers common paths and urges us forward on the journey.

MENTAL HEALTH RESOURCES
We hope that our events provide opportunities for growth, and that our audiences will use them as a starting point for further introspection. Many of the topics discussed in our events have the potential to bring up feelings and emotional responses. If you or someone you know needs mental health care and support, here are some resources to find immediate help and future healing:
🌿 Visit 988lifeline.org or text, call, or chat with The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline by dialing 988 from anywhere in the U.S. to be connected immediately with a trained counselor. Please note that 988 staff are required to take all action necessary to secure the safety of a caller and initiate emergency response with or without the caller’s consent if they are unwilling or unable to take action on their own behalf.
🌿 Visit thrivelifeline.org or text “THRIVE” to begin a conversation with a THRIVE Lifeline crisis responder 24/7/365, from anywhere: +1.313.662.8209. This confidential text line is available for individuals 18+ and is staffed by people in STEMM with marginalized identities.
🌿 Visit translifeline.org or call (877) 565-8860 in the U.S. or (877) 330-6366 in Canada to learn more and contact Trans Lifeline, who provides trans peer support divested from police.

Beautiful convdrsation, seems that Mark feels very comfortable with Cindy, and she really understands his work. which makes him open up more. 'underneath my fear there is a part that's not afraid.. if you are caught up in a storm- the safest place is the center of the storm'

Mark's books are so poetic and soothing. Thank you for sharing him with us. The frequent ads though are a real distraction.
