A Conversation with John Podesta and Exxon Mobil CEO Darren Woods | Global Conference 2024

John Podesta is the Senior Advisor to President Biden for International Climate Policy at the White House. He initially joined the White House in September 2022 as the Senior Advisor to President Biden for Clean Energy Innovation and Implementation (OCEII) to lead the rollout of clean energy provisions under the Inflation Reduction Act. John manages both an international and domestic portfolio through his new role from the White House. He works in coordination with the strong team in the Special Presidential Envoy for Climate office at State Department and the National Security Council to represent the U.S. as a fierce champion of bold climate action, as well as continuing to oversee the team implementing the Inflation Reduction Act. In this role, John engages with international, domestic, and private sector partners to harness the clean energy transition to create more prosperous, equitable, and resilient communities across the world. Podesta served as counselor to President Barack Obama, where he was responsible for coordinating the administration’s climate policy and initiatives. In 2008, he served as co-chair of President Obama’s transition team. He was a member of the U.N. Secretary General’s High-Level Panel of Eminent Persons on the Post-2015 Development Agenda. Podesta notably served as White House chief of staff to President William J. Clinton during the second administration. He chaired Hillary Clinton’s campaign for president in 2016.
Darren Woods is a graduate of Texas A&M University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering. He also holds a Master of Business Administration degree from Northwestern's Kellogg School of Management in Evanston, Illinois. Mr. Woods joined Exxon Company International in 1992 as a planning analyst in Florham Park, New Jersey. He progressed through a number of domestic and international assignments for Exxon Company International, ExxonMobil Chemical Company and ExxonMobil Refining and Supply Company. Effective January 1, 2016, Mr. Woods was elected president of Exxon Mobil Corporation and a member of the board of directors. The ExxonMobil Board of Directors elected Mr. Woods as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, effective January 1, 2017. Mr. Woods serves on the board of directors of the American Petroleum Institute and the board of trustees of the Center for Strategic and International Studies. He is also a member of the Business Roundtable, the Business Council and the Texas A&M University Engineering Advisory Council.
David Westin is anchor of “Wall Street Week” on Bloomberg TV and radio. From 1997 through 2010, Westin was president of ABC News - overseeing the network’s global coverage including the 2008 economic crisis, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the 9/11 attacks. Before taking the helm at ABC News, Westin was President of the ABC Television Network and General Counsel of the parent company, Capital Cities/ABC. He was a partner and associate at Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering in Washington and, immediately after law school, clerked for J. Edward Lumbard on the Second Circuit and for Lewis F. Powell on the Supreme Court. He serves on the boards of Riverdale Country School and Yonkers Partners in Education. He is the author of “Exit Interview,” which was published in 2012 and tells the story of what went on behind the scenes at ABC News in covering the biggest global news events. Westin graduated from the University of Michigan with a Philosophy degree with honors and distinction. He went on to earn a JD degree summa cum laude from the University of Michigan Law School.
