I’ll never forget when he looked directly at Paul Sarbanes, And said: “no one has a monopoly on virtue, not even you senator.”

He was running against a formidable candidate who was a member of the House of Representatives, then became the US Ambassador to the UN, then became the RNC Chairman, then became the CIA Director, and then became the Vice President of the US under Reagan for 8 straight years. Although I must say that Haig was the one who basically ran the country during the last few weeks or months of the Nixon Presidency until his boss got forced out and Ford took over.

As he tried to defuse or explain to Mr. Kalb the "I'm in charge here" statement he left out the one word which he used that day as a preface to that statement: "Constitutionally". He actually believed that he was third in succession which was true when I was in school but changed sometime after to the Speaker of the House. In this interview, he now rationalizes that he was managing the White House in the absence of the Vice-President but instead that day he gave the impression of at best, a misspoken comment, and at worst a cabinet that was collapsing under intense pressure. Listening to him in this interview, he still tried to minimize a very serious mistake but in any case he did his best to serve our nation in a variety of offices and deserves our thanks, especially for his military service. He spoke his mind but by all accounts he did not have the temperament to be president.
