A Complexity Ladder for Big History
TODAY IN PHILOSOPHY OF HISTORY: A Complexity Ladder for Big History
A paper of mine has just appeared in the Journal of Big History special issue on complexity. This paper isn’t specifically about philosophy of history, but it does touch on some philosophical problems, so I will consider some of these problems in the context of philosophy of history. In particular, I will discuss definitions and the use of scientific measurement in the increasing formalization of knowledge and what this could portend for history.

More mind-blowing episodes are planned.
@ 0:19 Nice Big-Bang-ish picture behind you, Nick. But don't forget that cosmological measuring only took off about 100 years ago. On the cosmological time-scale the length of this period is very, very, very short. The fact that during this short period we seem to be measuring an expanding universe is not at all a guarantee that we will be measuring an expanding universe forever. Let's meet again in say 1 million years, okay?

Everything at this scale (in the large and in the small) is subject to extensive revision as our knowledge improves. So, yes, meet in a million years and take a look again. Even better to meet in a billion years, since we're talking about cosmological scales of time.
