I'm not an expert but I believe the white powder is pine ash and the incense is agar wood. Sandal wood can also be used. Please correct me if I am mistaken.

I believe it to be rice ash as I use it at home in a similar way.

Also you can use other incense as long as it is powdered just use your head and make sure its not toxic. Some herbs are bad to burn in an enclosed area. Also some are not a good idea for certain people to handle such as pennyroyal for pregnant women etc. Its really fun to get into but you have to check into the herbs you use.
I agree. I would have had a 🕯 before ceremony begins to light the short incense stick with and asked the chatter to subside.

I thot the same thing! Lol! Seems so many have decided to start using lighters without any thot as to what it could mean for the esoteric changes. Personally I stick with the old way and only light my incense and candles with matches. In a jam, I HAVE used a lighter, but it never feels right to me!

what is done with the incense stick after lighting the agar? Put it out or let it burn?

Amazon and eBay both do a Chinese set in brass. I can’t find a porcelain set but will keep looking.

I wonder if the sulphur from a match would interfere with the smelling of the incense? I know, there’s butane in the lighter, it has an odor as well. Just a thought.

To me this looks like a culture is exploited to create marketing. The “ancient incense ceremony” itself is an exaggeration of the value of a practice. But this is also done for money so it seems kind of disingenuous.
