@@NoraDunn I would appreciate that. If I may pepper a question: for those of us who already have TSA precheck, is there a simplified way to convert to Global Entry? I realize that for someone starting without either, there's the full review and interview process. But since I've already some of those steps, is it more streamlined to convert? That would be great to see in your video on the subject. Thanks.

I have TSA precheck. However, my husband, who rarely travels, does not. We took a flight last year for medical procedures that i needed to use a wheelchair at both International Airports. One of the two airports let him as my helper go thru precheck like he had it. One made us use standard check-in. Every airport is different.

We flew into Denver from LHR 2:55 on 22nd June 2023 .12 to 14 kiosks on TSA precheck on entry. 2 for non prechecked travellers. It took nearly 2 and half hours to clear TSA. We booked in our baggage to fly onwards to Anchorage. Arriving at the TSA for boarding even worse with only one booth open for non Precheck travellers. We never moved for an hour when a US gent and another US family launched into a vitriolic verbal assault on a passing TSA employee. By this time the hall was nearly empty for prechecked. Eventually they opened 3 more kiosks for non prechecked fliers and cleared a queue 40 yards long in half an hour. So it took over 4 hours due to not prechecking. And no will to provide adequate service for ordinary travellers. To make matters worse our flight was cancelled about 15 minutes before boarding due to a tornado in the locality. Another 3 and a half hours in a queue for tickets for travel the next day. So to recap we landed at Denver at4pm approx and got a cab to a hotel at 12.30 next day. Tiring day for 2 over 70's.

Global entry gets you TSA Precheck included. It's about $100 and had a more in-depth interview and takes longer, but makes coming back into the US much easier. I've gone to smaller airports that don't have TSA Precheck and they usually hand me a little card that allows me to keep on my shoes and keep my electronics and liquids in my bag. Granted, the line is about 3 people deep, so not a big deal, but they do work with it.

Yes, I've had that same experience in a couple airports as well. In fact, at one of them, they actually had a TSA Precheck process, but they informed me that when I was there, the precheck line was closed, so they gave me a colored, laminated card to present to the agent, and I was routed through a magnetometer instead of the full body scanner.

I use disability services for TSA and airport security in EU. Though in this means I go through the system easier, I still have to follow the rules of removing liquids and electronics. My shoes, by habit I take them off but in CPH, I was told I did not have to do this. I did with autism get flagged for a pat down, and had to bear it, my disability service person did not catch the security agent in time to warn them. The person assisting me kept asking me if I was alright afterwards, and I told her not to worry about it. I think US airports can learn from CPH airport about disability services, we stay mostly out of the general population in a quiet area of the airport before being taken to our flight. PDX just put in a sensory room, but it is a playground of sensory things and for autistic kids, which can overstimulating. Not well thought out, probably moms thought it was a great idea, autistic designers would have made it better.

We have Global Entry with KTN. We were most recently offered Digital ID TSA check in when we downloaded our flight passes for a flight on Delta from LGA. It was amazing! The line was only a handful of people and all that is required is that you permit the TSA agent to take your photo with facial recognition. You don't even have to show any physical ID. Incredibly fast! So this will be the next option for travelers as the technology is rolled out.

In both PDX leaving and LIH returning I was pulled aside and asked to remove the walking boot, which was then scanned and wiped down and checked for explosive residue. That said, at some airports, I have resolved myself to have a more discourteous experience than at others. Precheck is a godsend if only to speed through those few airports; however, it's good at all domestic airports, as you've already said. One other comment that I'll offer about precheck is that, even though I'm a far cry from a conspiracy theorist, I'll admit that I don't fully trust the safety of the imaging systems used at the airports, especially since I've been diagnosed with cancer (no connection, but still a consideration). With precheck, passengers go through a mag instead of the scatter box, and I feel much safer for that experience.

When I saw TSA Precheck come out and what it offered, I was like "Sign me UP!" Weirdly, DFW, my "home" airport, didn't have a processing center. No, it was in Lawton, Oklahoma, a little truck rental place that happened to double as a ID check and interview location. Really? Yeah, it was pretty funny, but I got Precheck in 2014. Upgraded to Global Entry in 2018. Weirdly, my TSA Precheck expired in 2019, but because I have Global Entry now, it includes Precheck. Well worth the cheap cost!! But sometimes....there isn't Precheck. Some airports only offer TSA Precheck during certain hours. in SFO, it's 8 am on Sundays....great, but not if you have a 7 am flight. Yeah, get in the cattle line. And some airports, TSA Precheck doesn't mean anything, there is a "special" line, but they still make you take off your shoes, take out your laptop and do all the other things you supposedly didn't need to. As I found out, this was just a TSA employee who was annoyed and decided to take it out on the customers. Do NOT ever argue with a TSA Agent...you won't win. LOL But...for 99%+, it's great and I'll keep using it.

Nora, you didn't mention the dreaded ZZZZZ that appears on the boarding pass instead of TSA PreCheck. That is an automatic search. Recently I flew a domestic flight, I had TSA PreCheck on my boarding pass, but when I got to the TSA Employee checking ID/Boarding Passes, I was informed I was "the lucky passenger today and was selected for additional screening". Not the first time that has happened to me and probably won't be the last. While waiting at the gate I realized I needed to go back to the car. When I returned to the TSA PreCheck lane I was again informed that I was "the lucky passenger today selected for additional screening. My wife stayed at the gate so I had no bags, only my boarding pass and ID. From this I realized that there must be a code embedded in the boarding pass to be selected as "the lucky passenger today". I am a frequent flyer with 2M miles.

The reason why you need to take your shoes off and take stuff out of your bag is purely down to the scanners in use. Older scanners can get confused more easily. Newer scanners can detect things better and hence don't flag them up as needing to be checked. AMS has all new scanners. I don't think there is any old scanner left. So yeah, security there is a little bit easier. Granted, if you wear high boots then you'll still need to take those off.

Way more fun! 🤣 Seriously though, I don't fly enough for this to be worth it for me, and when I do fly it's almost always internationally so this wouldn't be of much use to me. Plus, I've always wondered how they make sure that potential violators don't get PreCheck to try to exploit it to do harm or get away with things you're not allowed to do on flights? Or do the same procedures still apply and PreCheck is basically just a way for frequent and/or affluent fliers to pay to get on a much shorter security line?

You still do have to remove shoes, belts, jewelry, but that's it. So TSA Pre-Check doesn't offer much benefit at those airports. Americans can get Nexus cards too, not just Canadians. They include Global Entry, which includes TSA Pre Check, and actually cost less than either (if you don’t count the cost of a trip to Canada to get interviewed, lol). But I’d still recommend just getting Global Entry to most people because for Nexus you have to have in-person interviews with both US and Canadian officials. Canadians have to go through Nexus to get Global Entry, but over a dozen other nationalities can apply for Global Entry through the Trusted Traveler program.

I just renewed my Nexus card, the procedure is a little different now. I had an interview with Canadian officials, took maybe 10 minutes. Now the next time I fly to the US I have to tell US customs that I need to have my US interview, I was advised to leave an extra hour for this process. Having the Nexus card has saved me a lot of time, last time I flew from Calgary, there was a line of maybe 50 people versus zero in the Nexus line. at a cost of $50 for 5 years it's a no brainer for me.

@@gordokroeker8397 I got my first Nexus card last year (because of the pandemic, my application was 4 YEARS in the making! LOL) So I had to do the 2-stage interview process as well. I tried twice to do the US interview whilst flying outbound; the first time the lineup was 3 hours long, so I had to wait until the next time I was flying to the US (that lineup was more like 35 mins). That was in Toronto airport last May so maybe the process is better streamlined now / elsewhere.

@@NoraDunn Me too!! I first applied and got my “conditional approval” in 2019, finally got my interviews in 2023, and my card arrived in the mail just after my last trip passing through Canada last July (with some extremely frustrating bits in between 😆) I was angry when I got a notice saying my application was cancelled because the 2 year limit had passed, even though interviews still hadn’t opened back up. They never did send any message saying it wasn’t really cancelled and I couldn’t find anything on the website about applications being extended. But eventually I tried to apply again and it wouldn’t let me, so I hoped that meant my application hadn’t really been cancelled. I had always hoped to do my interviews in airports like you two did, but that never worked out for me. When interviews first opened back up I made an appointment to interview at the border and the first one I could get was at least 9 months away. At one point, I had an overnight flight that included a long layover in Toronto. I hoped 🤞 to get interviewed there but wasn’t able to even get a clue as to when airport interviews might start back up, despite four separate conversations before, during, and after the hour or more I spent in the hot stuffy customs line in between having to give up my water to go through security again and the next access to plumbing out past customs. The Canadians told me to talk to the Americans and the Americans told me to talk to the Canadians 🙄 At the time, I didn’t realize there was some dispute between the American and Canadian border officials about guns keeping the interviews from opening back up. As far as I know, they never actually resolved it, just came up with a work-around eventually. That’s why the procedures are different now. At some point some more appointments opened up and I was able to move my appointment to five months sooner. Still had to go to the border though. I got interviewed on the American side and then crossed the border to get interviewed by the Canadians immediately after 🛃🛃

Hmmm, I'm wondering if I'll actually need mine now that I got it. I didn't realize you still go through the main security line when flying international flights. My local airport (Pittsburgh) is already dead. Last time i flew, I was the only one in line mid day (the standard non precheck line) with all of the agents standing around bored. But then I fly to JFK or Newark from Pittsburgh to then fly internationally - those are the airports that are actually a cluster and would most use the tsa precheck

I didn’t see this in other comments, but you may want to be sure to wear shoes with a very low heel if you have pre-check, especially if you end up in the general line. I had never encountered a more rude and obnoxious TSA agent than the one that yelled at me because the heel on my boot, maybe 1.5”, set something off. I would have gladly just removed my shoes like everyone else had I had known it was a potential issue (I was given a card and specifically told repeatedly not to remove my shoes because I had pre-check). While no traveler should be rude to these agents, these agents should also not go on power trips and abuse travelers.

Always look at your boarding pass for the Pre Check logo ... Pre Check is not guaranteed 100 % of the time. Does not make any diff what Endorsement's you have on your DL .... Global Entry ... Nexus etc etc ... if it does not have it on your boarding pass or show up on the scanner you will have to go into the standard lane.
