A common paraglider packing FAIL (it will SHOCK you!)
How you pack your glider can make a big difference. If you wrongly fold a modern paraglider you can permanently reduce the safety and performance. So in this video I'll show you how to pack it properly!

Thank you, Greg. I have always seen plp fold up their Glider and cringed. Your way is exactly what makes sense to me.
Great advice Greg, I didn’t think about it! I will do it like that then. Cheers and happy flying 🪂
Nice to see you confirming what I always did. Harness on top of the concertina and fold the wing around it. Great stuff Greg!
It's good to see an have more from you Greg Have really enjoyed all of your videos 👍
I started using a very oversized bag to make sure nothing gets too tight/squeezed. No h&f indeed :)
Thanks Greg! I've seen many pilots doing it in the wrong way, even expert ones!
i did a quick pack today and trying a new way to do that, i did the same, then i saw you doing that, analizing the same... i will keep this way to pack from now, thanks!!!!!
Thanks Greg. Great stuff as always!
Excellent as usual Greg, thanks and keep posting man! Didier from Réunion...you were very kind and friendly at a Glen club event for the introduction off your Book on SA sites back in 2000 when I was still a fledgling on his 1st trip to beautiful South Africa

I have a little Nova double skin and folded for a while but found I was stuffing it after folding in to the bag 🎒. Went back to using a concertina and the glider thanked me. Just feels neater and keeps it cleaner because the bag is under it protecting it. Takes a tad longer . Personal preference. Alpina and other similar wings concertina and care ❤
Amazing info, much appreciated
Cool! Thank you!
Thanks Sir Greg.
I don't know why I never thought about putting the pack in the center, that's great. Will also make sure it comes out orderly if I don't disconnect the glider from the harness, I just need to lay the glider facing forward before rolling it up, then roll it out nicely.
I will try this method right next time. TNX Greg😄
Sound stuff Greg. My Cayenne5 is still going strong after 5 years of (fairly) careful packing.

Thank you Greg! your video is very inspiring. Could you give some advices on how to pack paraglider together with large size harness, like impress 4?
Good video ...always done it that way since 'pillows' arrived. It was the way to avoid them and keep the curve large. One thing puzzles me regarding bags. There seems to be a desire to get smaller bags and squash the gear in at any price ...usually resorting to lots of persuading knee, body and squeezing. A slightly bigger bag (especially lightweight ones) adding little weight but a more relaxed pack and glider. Just a thought - size doesn't directly correlate to weight except in the mind.
@FlyWithGreg

I hear you Ed, but the smaller bag does bring the centre of weight closer to your back for hiking, which makes a big difference, reducing back strain. The trick is to find a bag that has some good adjustment to pull it in effectively, after you've got it in the bag easily.
Thank you
And I rally like the tips to wrap the jacket between the wing and the rugsack for swet protection.
wow awesome trick thanks!
Thankyou ❤
If I'm hiking I put the Wing/Harness wrap like do inside a bin liner before putting in the bag. This stops any sweat getting onto the wing.
I like it ! 👍

My glider has nitinol but the manufacturer still has quite specific packing instructions (swing) Do you think it is not necessary to worry too much about bending these rods?
merci Greg 😉.a bientôt
Thanks for the video. How do you know if your glider is damaged because of a wrong packing ? Those rods on the video looks really bad. How long was that glider packed in the wrong way to get to that point?
Huh, that's a neat way to pack! :)
Great hair sir!
Hey Greg, thanks for sharing your folding tips. My question is what if you’ve already got bent ribs? Is there a way to straighten them, without having to replace them completely?!? In falconry we use a hot water bath on a bent feather and it straightens perfect… can that trick work on the plastic ribs??
@JERFALCON

Also my pod with foam doesn’t really fit inside the wing… lol
Very good points. But how does one pack with a reversible harness? I suppose one could pack the jacket and other things instead of the harness inside the glider. Any Ideas? Thanks. Rob
Hi I'm jest got a wing but it has no rods. Should I be worried about this.? I think the wing was made in the 90s and I bought it thinking I could fly it but it's in bad shape, might use it for ground handling. Let me know if it's OK to fly I don't have much money to get a better one 😅 thanks❤ love all the help from u videos
Oh no! I just bought a zip-up concertina bag and a reversible harness! My wing doesn't have those rods though, they're more like full plates. Now I'm freaking out, better go have a look at it!
@FlyWithGreg

You can always stick a jacket or 'packing pillow' inside the bag to ensure the critical leading edge fold isn't compressed.
Thats why the nitinol reinforced wings are Superb, Advance, Swing, Niviuk etc. No hassle in da casle. Another thing... If you pack your wing the same way your glider get damaged. If you compress your wing too much than porosity falls.
Any tips for if you're trying to get the wing into a reversible harness?
Wish I could get my wing and harness into a back pack... Great video and good reminder of the importance of a properly packed wing.
Hi Greg and others. I've tried this keeping the wing connected to the harness. Am I correct in thinking that it only works if you seperate them? Or is there a way?
Luckly i got a flip back so i can put the wing foldet in the flightseat. If i do hike to a startpoint. My Flightwight is abut 100kg. Whits a day of water ration and food plus emergency Clothers and self rescue kit.
Do nitinol rods fully alleviate this concern? Or only reduce it?
How do you get the harness so small? Do you remove the padding/use the blow up protector? With the protector and reserve, i can't get my strike that small.
I wonder if a quick-pack-bag is less or more stressful for the tissue.

this! same ;) just bought my first glider and it didn't come with a concertina-bag, so I'm "stuck" for now with using my quick-pack-bag which I already had before the glider ;)
@thisisyol
Жыл бұрын
@@jodelboy Just guessing, but it probably comes down to how much you have to walk with the quickpack-bag. With every step the tissue can wiggle inside the bag. And with every wiggle, there is probably friction. Also I noticed my rods not looking that great after longer use of the quickpack. They are probably fine though. As it is you first glider, I can only give you two advice: use it! and don't waste 25 minutes with packing. Try to get another flight in! The first year is the hardest, because you'll have a lot of shorter flights that don't learn as much as one longer flight. But you will profit from fast packing because you can train launching and landing, which are crucial for you being great at.
I do fold my gilder the right way but I have an larger glider than most so less ability to hike with it
Грег, ты классный . Уважуха .

Buy a wing with only relatively short rods (short enough to fit in one fold length) in the leading edge. Or if too long for that, make the fold on them the outermost one. Thankfully shorter rods are becoming more common again now after the curse of full length rods.

Jokes on you, I dont have rods.
What about a concertina comparaison? There is like nine different ones in flybubble... and... what about the compress bag?
I don’t believe you will damage your glider if you pack it different. I did test this with a new glider. I used to pack it always cell by cell but with this new one I used the old way, just fold it and nothing more. After 2 years, I didn’t notice any differents to my previous glider which I always folded cell by cell. It still launched easy, no more collapses and after a flight, all cells were open like normal. So in my humble opinion it is just what we think it does. It actually doesn’t make any differents. Even Nova gliders said exactly the same with their gliders. It is a nice video though.
@jonathansummerfield8390

You might be right, that modern gliders are less keen to get damaged by bad packing. But: Close bends as you'd be doing then when you pack it with two sausages give a way higher stress to the material. Adding, that you tend to fold the glider always at the same spots. Concertina bags are not perfect but out of view of engineering and material science they sure make a lot of sense. Another big advantage is, that you don't need to open you glider for packing. After landing, I usually keep my concertina bag in my jacket, I put it on the ground nicely, pick up the glider with all lines, throw it on the open bag and then get out of the harness. This is super fast, practical and protects my glider from getting draged around the ground. I do pack my miniwing the old style and stuff it in a drybag for mountaineering. I think it's important to understand what stresses our 4000€ flying machines.

Nova gliders don't have C rods so that's not an issue for them. Even though Nova wings are known for ease of packing, they still include this quote in the manual... "When the wing is folded it is recommended not to bend the rods unnecessarily. This is particularly true if the wing is to be stored for longer periods."
@FlyWithGreg

@@tonyevans3297 incorrect. I can quote directly from discussions with Nova. "The days of packing your wing any way you want are long gone". Modern materials demand modern packing methods

@@FlyWithGreg I was kind of agreeing with you Greg and disagreeing with Marco... I quoted directly from the Mentor 6 page about not bending rods unnecessarily. Perhaps Nova should update their packing information to make it more clear. I pack my Sigma 10 so as to have no bends whatsoever in my rods. I don't have to wrap it around anything as the Sigma is designed so that lining up the leading edge also lines up the C rods.

I have problems with the middle B rods, they don't get aligned and sometimes the folding bends them quite a lot... What do you do to have them aligned as well?
@FlyWithGreg
2 жыл бұрын
if you are folding around your harness they shouldn't get a tight bend. You could try begin your concertina fold at the trailing edge, clip up a few clips, put the harness on that piece, then do the leading edge. That way you have some resistance to pull against as you cell-by-cell, so you can pull the B rods to get them moving next to each other.

I use a cortina bag as well, that came with my MacPara Averis glider. It's not perfect but it keeps everything in place. I keep the trailing edge a little bit out of the bag though, so that the ribs have some breathing space. Always make sure that there is almost no air in the glider to make this work. When I'm home I open the harnass (with the glider inside) to keep the tension off as much as possible. I think that it works the best with a hike & fly glider though, a normal glider seems to be a bit too bulky for a reversable harnass. In my case I can even fit my helmet inside the back instead of keeping it on top, which is easier when traveling by plane. @@chez372
I came to this video expecting to see how I F*CKED up my packing for the last 3 years ... Turns out I did it exactly as you did :D Edit: Except for the harness which is too bulky(MacPara Hawaii), so I actually fold the wing just 2 times and put it inside the harness.
Not a big concern when dealing with nitinol rods I hope? 😅

No, that's why my fast-pack for hike and fly looks a bit different - only recommended on wings that have rods that can take it! kzread.info/dash/bejne/epN1qpesfputiZs.html
My wings look new because I fold it everytime. And disconnect the risers from the harness. Everytime. I'm old school.
and then Maurer shows up, fold his wing like whatever in 30s, squeezes with a knee, packs with harness on top and then flies 200+ km on it :D But yeah, totally agreed, fold to the side, wrap around the harness and it's safe. But unfortunately it takes time and is a little bit more bulky.
