A common paraglider packing FAIL (it will SHOCK you!)

How you pack your glider can make a big difference. If you wrongly fold a modern paraglider you can permanently reduce the safety and performance. So in this video I'll show you how to pack it properly!

    Good video ...always done it that way since 'pillows' arrived. It was the way to avoid them and keep the curve large. One thing puzzles me regarding bags. There seems to be a desire to get smaller bags and squash the gear in at any price ...usually resorting to lots of persuading knee, body and squeezing. A slightly bigger bag (especially lightweight ones) adding little weight but a more relaxed pack and glider. Just a thought - size doesn't directly correlate to weight except in the mind.

  • @FlyWithGreg

    @FlyWithGreg

    2 жыл бұрын

    I hear you Ed, but the smaller bag does bring the centre of weight closer to your back for hiking, which makes a big difference, reducing back strain. The trick is to find a bag that has some good adjustment to pull it in effectively, after you've got it in the bag easily.

  • @thisisyol

    @thisisyol

    Жыл бұрын

    @@jodelboy Just guessing, but it probably comes down to how much you have to walk with the quickpack-bag. With every step the tissue can wiggle inside the bag. And with every wiggle, there is probably friction. Also I noticed my rods not looking that great after longer use of the quickpack. They are probably fine though. As it is you first glider, I can only give you two advice: use it! and don't waste 25 minutes with packing. Try to get another flight in! The first year is the hardest, because you'll have a lot of shorter flights that don't learn as much as one longer flight. But you will profit from fast packing because you can train launching and landing, which are crucial for you being great at.

    I don’t believe you will damage your glider if you pack it different. I did test this with a new glider. I used to pack it always cell by cell but with this new one I used the old way, just fold it and nothing more. After 2 years, I didn’t notice any differents to my previous glider which I always folded cell by cell. It still launched easy, no more collapses and after a flight, all cells were open like normal. So in my humble opinion it is just what we think it does. It actually doesn’t make any differents. Even Nova gliders said exactly the same with their gliders. It is a nice video though.

  • @jonathansummerfield8390

    @jonathansummerfield8390

    You might be right, that modern gliders are less keen to get damaged by bad packing. But: Close bends as you'd be doing then when you pack it with two sausages give a way higher stress to the material. Adding, that you tend to fold the glider always at the same spots. Concertina bags are not perfect but out of view of engineering and material science they sure make a lot of sense. Another big advantage is, that you don't need to open you glider for packing. After landing, I usually keep my concertina bag in my jacket, I put it on the ground nicely, pick up the glider with all lines, throw it on the open bag and then get out of the harness. This is super fast, practical and protects my glider from getting draged around the ground. I do pack my miniwing the old style and stuff it in a drybag for mountaineering. I think it's important to understand what stresses our 4000€ flying machines.

    Nova gliders don't have C rods so that's not an issue for them. Even though Nova wings are known for ease of packing, they still include this quote in the manual... • @FlyWithGreg

    if you are folding around your harness they shouldn't get a tight bend. You could try begin your concertina fold at the trailing edge, clip up a few clips, put the harness on that piece, then do the leading edge. That way you have some resistance to pull against as you cell-by-cell, so you can pull the B rods to get them moving next to each other.

    I use a cortina bag as well, that came with my MacPara Averis glider. It's not perfect but it keeps everything in place. I keep the trailing edge a little bit out of the bag though, so that the ribs have some breathing space. Always make sure that there is almost no air in the glider to make this work. When I'm home I open the harnass (with the glider inside) to keep the tension off as much as possible. I think that it works the best with a hike & fly glider though, a normal glider seems to be a bit too bulky for a reversable harnass. In my case I can even fit my helmet inside the back instead of keeping it on top, which is easier when traveling by plane. @@chez372
