A Colorful Conte Portrait Demonstration by Scott Hutchison
A narrated 14 minute video of a self portrait using color Conte crayons on color paper. My goal is to balance realism with a loose (painterly ) approach. Art is an experience, a language form and a form of communication. With this drawing I seek an understand of the materials and how they play a role in the creative process.

Thanks Liz. It's all about trade offs isn't it? I'm a firm believer in testing out new mediums and seeing what they do.

Oh wow I thought conte only came in Black, white and burnt red. I had no idea. I'm about to get back into drawing with conte. Thanks for this video. It was helpful and informative!

I like to put conte on stonehenge paper
While I like the sets of Conté Crayon, once a particular color is used, it might be hard to replace-my favorite is the Ultramarine color which is actually a medium to light similar to periwinkle. I cannot find it even when some resources sell individual sticks. Do you have problems replacing certain colors? if so, how do you deal with it? Wonderful drawing demo. I like the Conté because it works so well like and with charcoal.
This is brilliant! How’s conte different from other crayons like Neocolor or crayola?
I have lots of pastels yet not a fan of them yet !!!! The shows in NYC feel like a graveyard.
I think the swatches should have come with small examples of effect( mood,intent,the things you mentioned,light,... obtainable.
