A Colonialist Agenda? - Episode 1 | Colonisation, Christianity and the Treaty

Was missionary activity in 1800s New Zealand an intentional bridgehead for colonisation? Andrew Urquhart speaks to leading historians who unpack evidence to the contrary - that missionaries were actively trying to protect Māori sovereignty and culture.

it wasnt just maori that were alienated once government got into power so were missionaries like henry williams who had been instrumental in the establishment of the treaty in the first place it was politics power and control of land and resources that it came down to.maori today have very little land owenership today compared to what they originally owned that speaks for itself.but my personal opinion is the missionarys were here to preach the gospel and they worked hand in hand with maori that it was henry william s and his brother who wrote and printed the first new testament in the maori.language .one of the biggest impacts on maori that is not normally mentioned is the huge loss of lives because of intrroduced diseses by the new colonists just in the penninsula in canterbury alone the population was decimated worse than any battles that were fought because of diseases like chicken pox or influenza as they had no iimmunity..From 1810 to 1840 there were around 120,000 deaths from illness and other 'normal' causes, an average of 4,000 a year. In the same period warfare caused perhaps 700 deaths per year.

Colonization was to take shit off Indigenous population even wiping them out to get and keep those resources that were valued and placed an european system foreign to the original inhabitants than occupied those lands with European peoples making a profit. The missionaries were two faced as they said one thing to Maori but wrote quite racist stuff about a people that feed and protected them. The missionaries were foreign agents for the British crown as the colonial office sort their advice on countries they wanted to colonize. The missionaries were also selling muskets to Maori because the typical steel fish hooks or an axe for food weren't sufficient no more because of over abundance.

The missionaries were the "gentiles" tasked with spreading the gospel a gospel born out of Judaism a Gospel of Jesus of Jewish descent from the house of David but the gentiles taught a type of pragmatic European flavoured gospel a western type ioutward look at the gospel they seemed to have overlooked the inward look of the gospel or how to think in the heart many times the "law" of the gospel was taught the spirit of the gospel was overlooked the "process" was more important sometimes the messengers needed shooting (metaphorically speaking)I grew up thinking Jesus had blond hair and blue eyes and Moses was an American called Charlton Heston having said all that as a young boy C OF E and Ratana was the influence from my tupuna as an adult I'm a Catholic
