Rainbow Dash did not have tufted ears like the rest of the guards in The Cutie Re-Mark, so I think that she was wearing a Bat Pony uniform while most of the others were not.

I personally tend to believe that they are an evolutionary subspecies, like pegasus, unicorns, earthpons. However, unlike the three tribes, Thestrals are not so common.

The short fan animation for a "Come Little Children" cover, could tie into the cave pony angle, as the children Luna rescues from neglect are shown residing in caves/underground, and being loyal to her for taking them away from the early cantalot society that was too stretched thin to care for them.

I remember always being quite confused about Bat Ponies in the show as they show up once or twice then flutterbat but we never meet an ACTUAL character that actually talks or has any significance. They’re not included in the school of friendship either which I find weird. They’re very cool but it’s so odd that they were almost forgotten by the show.

Glad to see someone making a video about bat-ponies, I love the species and I agree that there should've been more of them in the canon series. I had hoped we'd see at least one at the end of the show, possibly in the School of Friendship (come on, they featured kirins there at the end, but forgot about bat-ponies!).

I always subscribed to them being a separate species, and I still do. But if Fluttershy can be transformed into a vampire pony via a spell gone wrong, then perhaps Nightmare Moon was powerful enough to convert regular ponies into bat ponies. Maybe the process takes some time which is why RD only possesesses bat wings, but not bat ears or eyes yet.

I actually never realized that, I watched the Fluttershy episode ofc but I thought Luna's/Nightmare Moon's guards were just wearing armor, let's hope G5 expands on this lore someday

There’s a second episode on Nightmare Night when Fluttershy dresses as Flutterbat and scares her friends (Scare Master)

6:44 Oh man. If you think about it, that nightmare moon alternate timeline has the implication that the wings are just part of their uniform.

One thing I find interesting is the interpretation of Nightmare Moon as having a batwing/feather hybrid configuration, which potentially sets the idea of bat ponies all the way to episode 1. Its not super common, but iirc is was even seen in some officially licensed metch at some point

First off I feel like it’s kind of a shame that, there were no Bat Pony side characters in a similar way to like, Trixie, Starlight, Sunburst, Shining Armor, Spitfire, the Cakes, etc. in the show, I feel like such a character would’ve been interesting to see in the show. but anyWho secondly I do also have my own headcanon for for the Bat Ponies, connected to a bigger Hasbro universe crossover series, i’m currently writing in there, they are called Thestrals. (The name taken from a similar bat winged horse species from Harry Potter, I used it as their official name because I personally feel like Bat Ponies sounds more like a nickname then their actual name, also inspired from others who also used that name as well.) And they have quite a long history, but i’ll give all of you a few notes to keep it short and concise. starting up with where they live? They live in a tropical Island chain shaped like a crescent moon and, named ‘Mondakramb Isles’ Mooncrest Isles in old Ponish. though there are also large populations in Equestria as well, they have a fruitarian diets with some insects, though there are many nasty rumors about them drinking the blood of other ponies, they are a distant cousin breed to most ponies and they have a close kinship, with two other sort of outcast breeds the Crystal Ponies and Bicorns, (Ponies with two horns.) And together they are known as the Lunar Herds or ‘the Lesser Herds’ a outdated ethnic slur by the Solar Herds. They have a very tensed history with some of the other ponies, especially unicorns both being the de facto, cultural heads of their respective herds and the most closest to Princess Celestia, and Princess Luna respectfully however, in modern times they have a lot more amiable relationship with some rough spots here and there. then thirdly I’ve also created my own Bat Pony OC, connected to the same aforementioned Hasbro universe crossover series, I call her Jeweler Rouge, she is the Commander of the Lunar Royal Guards, (My version of the Night Guard,) and a friendly rival to and, a close friend of Shining Armor ever since, their royal guard academy days together. She is a fun-loving teasing type, who loves to poke fun at her male counterpart Shining, but she can also be serious at times and acts more professional, especially around the likes of Princess Luna, who she have high respect for and a great fighter of all. So yeah, sorry about the length I have a lot of things to talk about in the topic of bat ponies, and that’s just scratching the surface of my thoughts but i’ll end it here.

Tatzulponies are more interesting to me, mostly because they're much smaller in presence in the fandom, and have even less basis in the show. Yet, I'd say they fit the Nightmare Night spirit even better, being monsters and all.

I love bat ponies and I will never not be mad at the fact that they never went more into details about them, they exist in both the current timeline and the timeline where nightmare moon wins.

Interesting fact, in Portugal Mythology they have legends/tales of Two similar creatures, one is named Cavalo do Pensamento aka the Thinking/Thought Horse, the other is called the Cavalum, both are described as Horse-like creatures with Bat-Wings, breathes Fire, and could summon/control/manipulate Storms, Cavalo do Pensamento is the nicer of the two, it appears in legends of the Enchanted Moors, and gets it's name from the fact that it is said to show up to people who Think about it hard enough, and is said to give people rides to where they need to be, it is said to live in caves up on very tall mountains, it's favorite pass time is flying around at great speeds, even though it's not Evil it has been known to destroy entire villages completely by accident due to the storms it creates because it is so powerful, The Cavalum is the more malevolent one, believed to be the devil in the form of a Bat-Winged Horse, in a legend from the city of Machico on Madeira Island, the Cavalum came to the local church to challenge God, when God didn't respond the Cavalum decided to conjure up a Storm that could destroy the church, the longer God ignored the Cavalum's little hissy fit, the worse the storm became, it would not only threaten the city, but the entire island, only when the church's crucifix flies out into sea did God finally intervene, he dispelled the storm, and then imprisoned the Cavalum inside a set of caves, the caves became known as Furnas do Cavalum, and it is said that during storms, you can hear the Cavalum in all his anger and despair for being imprisoned in said caves, and it is said to devour those who travel & get lost in the caves. So perhaps the Bat-Ponies could be related to these two creatures some how, maybe the Bat-Ponies as a whole race/species could be referred to as the Cavalum(which could work as both the Singular & the Plural names, like with Fish or Deer), and Cavalo do Pensamento could have been the Leader of the Cavalum, either in the Present or at one point in the distant past before they started to follow Princess Luna, it would be a decent way to expand on the Bat-Pony Lore, and if they were based on Portugal Mythology, then maybe they could speak some kind of Pony version of Portuguese, it would be a good way to use them as a method of teaching kids how to deal with Language Barriers if handled correctly.

Thestrals are really, really cool guys and it seems to me personally that outwardly they are a little scary, but at heart they can be even kinder than ponies. And yes, I think they are just an evolutionary subspecies of ponies, not a separate race.

Oh, I remember bat ponies and all the famous OC's you mentioned. Back when I was still quite active in the fandom, I had created a lot of pony OC's. One of them was a bat pony princess ^^

Bat ponies never did officially make it into the Tails of Equestria role-playing game (though I did introduce a homebrew based on the fan-fic "Interview with a Batpony", adapted into an audiodrama by Scribbler). I placed the main Bat pony communities within the Trotsylvanian Alps. I do have hopes for Bat ponies in Renegade's My Little Pony Roleplaying Game. I'd love to see Bat ponies brought into G5 but that seems more likely for the comics from IDW than in animation.

Wait, did Luna helped the bat ponies BEFORE or AFTER being trapped in the moon for 1000 years? Because if it was before, then does that mean the two guards Echo and Nocturn are immortal too or- something else?

It feels like Bat Ponies were snubbed by Hasbro from becoming the official 4th race of ponies. Instead, we got Kirins later on. Not that Kirins are bad, but it seems daddy Hasbro didn't want anything that looked too "edgy".

In Portugal Mythology they actually have Two Bat-Winged Horse creatures, they are similar but different, one is called "Cavalo do Pensamento" who is more friendly and is said to come to lost travelers who think about it hard enough & offer them rides to safety, the other is called the "Cavalum" who is said to be evil and has a legend to it that explains why a system of Real World caverns is named after it, "Furnas do Cavalum", I'll bet that if Lauren Faust knew about this like 20 years ago, she would have incorporated this into FiM lore, like make it where the Bat-Ponies were actually named the "Cavalum"(used as both the singular and the plural) and their leader was named "Cavalo do Pensamento", and their race spoke a Pony version of Portuguese which made it hard to communicate with the majority of them, but maybe a future generation can eventually do something like that.

Thanks, and yeah I did a little research on Kyrospawn, and his influence and channel itself is pretty interesting, though I don't think there's a lot to talk about for a whole video really. It kinda looks like he's simply one of many bronies from the earlier days of the fandom who basically just lost interest after a while and stopped being active on their MLP related accounts.

i think this video was rlly great and got me more invested in bat ponies than i thought i’d be. but ngl the repeating of the same points over and over agin like how bat ponies were popular due to fan arts and animation really threw me off there. hope you can take this feedback and continue making great videos!

I think g5 will introduce more races over time. Right now it seems that the ponies are pretty isolated from what happened to seperate them from the other races like Breezies, bat ponies, and even the hypogrifs.

In the episode "Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sheep?" We see Fluttershy become Flutterbat in the combined Ponyville dream. And in "Scaremaster" she dresses up as a more alluring bat pony with the black dress she is wearing, along with the fake bat ears and wings.

There was a few Nightmara night episodes one where they go through a maze trying to show Fluttershy how it wasn't scary

I love bat ponies, I do wish they were seen more in G4, but I also do want to see if bat ponies will ever be seen in G5. I also have a MLP oc as a bat ponies, his name being Knight Eye.

It was a pleasure watching.

The Bat Ponies are pretty much my top favorite of the Non/Sub-Pony Species. Not only for their design, but also the creative freedom the writers left for the fandom. I personally like the ideas floating around about them! For instance: I like the idea that "Bat Pony" could be a good nickname for "Thestral", and that their dialect of speech could range from Spanish, Russian, and Transylvanian.

Bat ponies are cool, no bias. ...okay, maybe a little bias...

I feel like batponies can't be an entirely different race, or, if they are, there has to be some way to turn a normal pony into a bat pony. My evidence? Bat Pony Rainbow Dash. We see Rainbow Dash before each timeline split, and she's always been normal Rainbow Dash. The fact that she's a Bat Pony later in that same timeline implies some sort of race swap, a costume, or other explanation I'm not thinking of. It doesn't look like she has Bat Pony eyes, so I suppose anything is possible. (Great video btw)

Nightmare night was in two episodes though, the other one was in a later season and fluttershy dresses as bat pony

And not all bats have sharp fangs and drink bloods. Or vampire one. My favorite is flying fox and then fruit bats.

Epic bat hours

I have a pair of bat pony ocs named Jack and Lantern, who are half zebra. They lived in a commune of bat ponies who cultured an orchard, but one year there was a blight on the trees, so their mother sent them to live with their father. But the train broke down on the way, and Lantern snuck away to explore. The two got lost, but found their way to ponyville

Btw, why does that animation has Russian subtles? I mean, as a Russian myself, it's flattering, but like, we are not the second most popular language on youtube, that would be Spanish.

I had an Idea for a super-cute Bat Pony character named Tomato Twist, who was orange-reddish in colour with a leaf-green mane & tail. And a Tomato plant vine as her Cutie mark. She was a bit strange, preferring to be out in the daylight hours in the late evening and early mornings. She was timid of other Ponies, similar to Fluttershy, but also had a bit of a silly comical side similar to Pinkie Pie. She lived in a secret, hidden, small but sparse, homely cave close to the edge of the Everfree Forest, and outside of her cave, she had a small fruit and veg garden, the centrepiece of which was her own personal Zap Apple tree. Although she's Called "Tomato", she is very fond of and loves apples, particularly Zap Apples, hence the "Twist" in her name, perhaps (she also invented Apple and tomato Pie)... I also had an idea for a sequel to both the "Bats!" episode and the "Too Many Pinkie Pies" episode. Which I called "Futterbat Returns" (a play on the film titled Batman Returns). Where an accident at the Mirror Pool with Fluttershy causes her to be cloned by the Mirror Pool. Creating a clone is a clone of Flutterbat, whom Fluttertershy now sees as a new little sister, and Twilight successfully tries to tame and befriend this new shy and semi-wild Flutterbat (who, apart from squeaks and hisses, is pretty much mute, though she can understand language more or less). However, there's a problem as there is a fruit festival in Ponyville. Chaos ensues, though Flutterbat didn't actually do anything wrong. It's all a horrible misunderstanding, and Flutterbat gets very upset by this... Meanwhile, another much bigger problem arises as it turns out that the Vampire Fruit Bats have secretly been using the Mirror Pool to clone thousands of themselves, and they're swarming towards Ponyville and the festival to eat all the fruit. However, Flutterbat saves the day by using her enhanced hypnotic Flutter-Stare and herds the Vampire Fruit Bats away, saving Ponyville and the fruit festival, thus proving herself to be a hero and the other ponies, including Applejack, who'd been particularly and unreasonably antagonistic towards her, welcome and except Flutterbat as a new friend to Ponyville.
