A-Class foiling catamaran - awesome ride - testing new Mischa sail - best personal 26kn speed

Спорт

Got my new Mischa sail for my DNA F1x A-Cat and time to try it out as the new 2021 season starts with this May.
As the the new sail: "... next generation Mischa Sails which came from pre-covid worlds and lot’s of straight line testing. The sail is called the Hybrid, reduced the shape in the bottom area for upwind foiling and increased the twist in the design for upwind foiling. The material Endumax is a more stable material which supports the shape of the sail better".
For my first ride this season i am stunned to peak downwind max speed 26kn and upwind 18kn, and have stable 22ish knows long runs downwind. Broke my personal speed record already first day on the water. TWS 8-16kn.
And yes, I trapeze relatively high, as I don't trust my rookie sailing skills enough at water temperatures of cold 9 degrees 🙃

    Here's an interesting idea. Travelling to some remote pacific island that the local population has a somewhat limited contact with the outside world. Talking with them, and showing them this rig, and how fast it goes and open up their imagination to try and replicate with their tribal level, instead of their basic catamarans they have.

    That looks so badass. You're inspiring me to get involved in a class cat sailing. Looks like a great adrenaline fix! How deep of water do you need to have in water to sail with those foils?

  • @flyinggorilla

    @flyinggorilla

    2 жыл бұрын

    yes it is relatively safe and really cool adrenaline. i welcome everyone joining the class ;-) foils are 130cm long, rudders are 120cm long. rudders and foil reach about .9m below the hull, so in 1.5m water depth you are safe even with short waves and weight on one side of the boat.

    @@flyinggorilla thank you for the insight! I'm looking forward to getting involved even if I can't jump in with an A class out of the gate. I might just start out with a Hobie cat. What are the typical price ranges for a-class?

    Great videos ! Since you sail both a T foiling boat as well as J foiling A Cat, I would like to know ow your opinion as to which you feel is more fun, challenging your skills , and is your preference overall ? I am considering converting my classic A Cat into a foiler and want to know which foil is best choice without considering Class racing rules ... I want to do this for my own enjoyment and not to abide by racing class rules ...

    Hi Kourosh, the short answer is: A-Cat for fun and adrenaline, Whisper with T-foils for fun and family. The A-Cat has Z-foils, great upwind performance (upwind usually non-foiling mode for max VMG, upwind foiling for VMG is harder and requires 12kn+ TWS), foils downwind starting at 7kn TWS and rises out of the water at 13kn to accelerate immediately to 15kn+. 20kn boat speed downwind (at approx 12kn TWS) are good to manage, at 15kn+ TWS it becomes a rocket with afterburner and due to its light weight a beast the same time. Thats where I am still really challenged a lot, but thats why it is also so interesting, I still feel there is so much opportunity to learn. It goes fast since foils are slim, tradeoff is lack of gennaker, so 2-5kn TWS downwind is slow. A-Cat is definitly more challenging but can be used for regattas. The Whisper has large T-foils which are very stable (not as stable as what I hear about the iFly, but still) and makes learning foiling easier. The T-foils are fantastic on reach course to foil with family and friends for fun, because those have wands that trim the wing based on distance to the water. The #1 family-fit reason for whisper and T-foils are lack of spray. I had a Nacra F16 (non foiling) and in the sunniest days the crew was freezing, because the neoprene was always wet from spray. Not so on a foiler, especially a stable T-foiler. Since then my family only comes with the Whisper. Biggest tradeoff of T-foilers is limited regatta-abilities with suboptimal upwind VMG. It can be improved with by leaning into the wind like a moth-sailor upwind, because you need enough lateral forces. The whisper has fairly bold foils, which also mean water resistance, so also light wind performance is mediocre, but again slimmer T-foils can improve that situation. Also i have new Mischa Sails for my whisper, which improve upwind performance so far I can tell, but I still need to test more. Oh there is another important practical difference: Z-foils on an A-Cat can be lifted and removed by simply pulling at the top, so also on the water. Also when placed, they dont reach outside of the boats perimeter, as they point more inwards. The T-foils however can only be lifted so far till the T hits the hull. No removal, this means the T always stands outside of the perimeter in the way when docking. Hope that helps. FG

    @@flyinggorilla thanks for your detailed reply. From what I understand , A-Cat with Z22 foils is a better choice for continued learning, challenging your skills , and speed ....

    I am aiming for simmilar cruise-speeds with my own design. Though my whole boat with sail is gonna costs less than your foresail xD Gonna test it within the next 2 months. Kiteboats are the next big thing after foils. They already outperform sails in most metrics so hard its not even funny.

    Kites also have MUCH less heeling moment, since they attach low in the boat. They also operate in higher, cleaner air with stronger wind. It's easier to fly a sail than a kite. Etc. It's harder to put a sail in the water than a kite. So some advantages, plus some disadvantages for either. It's kind of hard to compare kites to sails since they're different things.

    I made the design available at www.thingiverse.com/thing:4982005 for 3D printing. The chase cam is tied to a bungee that comes down from the sailtop. It is tied there to the ring that hooks the sail into the mast-top. you can see it here kzread.info/dash/bejne/mHimzdWGkbrHl6g.html
