At least they managed to get many of the original cast members back, and they actually performed their parts decently. Even though you know exactly where the story is going, it's still an enjoyable, nostalgic watch.

I actually got a bit emotional over the death of “the old man.” Even though he’s a fictional character, you get used to seeing and hearing him every year. Facing his death in the film felt like losing someone familiar to me. On that note, I’m glad they went that route rather than trying to hire someone to impersonate Darren McGavin. Nobody can deliver the performance like he did. And he is very much actually dead sooooo

The ending got me. They honored the old man well and the way they tied in Ralphie with the original movie was done so well! They really did a nice job with keeping the memory and respecting the original movie.

The oddity of that is that the original is a sort of a pastiche of director Bob Clark's 1950s childhood and author Jean Shepherd's 1930s childhood, with setting elements from both. So really it should take place in the 70s and the 90s, or something like that, but the material culture of later decades is more distinct so they had to give it a clearer setting.

absolutely; I'm glad they didn't infuse any woke-ness! But remember the time frame is 1974ish so if they did something in a later timeframe, I am sure they would have killed it with woke-ism...

Man the ending was absolutely the best part of this movie. They honored the old man so damn well and did a nice callback to the first movie. I was grinning from ear to ear because it made sense, and it gave me that nice, warm, good feeling of watching the 24hr marathon on TBS. It created a newfound appreciation and I’ll be remembering that when put the marathon on TV this year for Christmas!

Just watched it and I felt like it was a B+/B film. Yes, it could have toned down on the nostalgia and narration, but it didn’t take away from my experience. It struck a chord with me as I myself lost my old man over the summer. He was a huge fan of the original and we were interested to see how it was going to turn out since Peter Billingsley was going to reprise his role. Overall, a worthy follow up

I really like this movie because unlike the original, this story is told from the perspective of a parent. It made me think about the Old Man’s effort to give Ralphie and Randy the best Christmas he could in the first. I give this an A+ because it does its job greatly. Expecting this movie to be a tv cinematic masterpiece is unrealistic.

This deserves to be higher than a C+ (btw that was a song number in A Christmas Story LIVE! in case you forgot) 😅 It got 79% on Rotten Tomatoes Just finished the movie on MAX after the first one just turned 40 this year As an example of a sequel done right Peter Billingsly miraculously carried this very well He makes his own stamp on the story we all know and love He has his own mid-life crisis worried he'll never be perfect like when he was a kid There's plenty of throwbacks and appearances from the original movie that'll please fans The rest of the supporting players are very lovable Ends up being very episodic going from one vignette to the next with Ralphie's family experiencing their own misfortunes but ultimately still having the Christmas that brings them together Sometimes seeing old friends and family members is all that matters and gratitude The first movie is timeless as can be but this manages to allow a passing of the torch proper without rehashing so much thank god I’ll admit the fantasy sequence with Ralphie in jail that was a bit disturbing 😅

I'm really not sure how you could dump on this (or think the sequel with Steenburgen was even good). Of course nothing will be as good as the first one, but this one was pretty good. It hit all the buttons, it had all the players (sans the real parents - one's in her eighties and the other is dead, so kinda hard) and it kept true to its story. Peter Billingsley IS Ralphie and that's what matters. No sequel will ever be as great as the original and you seriously can't change a perfect cast of characters to other actors and call it good. It was fun and nostalgic and that matters.

I loved seeing the house again along with the rooms and the old man’s chair. It was a member berry movie. It was bad. The storyline was cheesy. The kids were terrible. Ralphie isn’t nearly as compelling as an adult as he was as a kid and the worst was the mother. They should never have replaced her. Either use the original or kill off the character. The only thing that worked for me was the friends from the first movie, the bar scenes and his nemesis turned friend at the end. Zach Ward really was outstanding at recapturing the character and I loved his character arch.

Spoiler I was worried they were going to try and make Zack Ward the same as he was in the original. Instead they made him into a good guy. This ring true to my experience with people like that from my childhood. They are usually nice guys once they get into their 40s and in many cases have more character since they went through a lot. The film should have told more stories about what happened between the first film and this one. They could have even used some CG and made some scenes of other events. Instead they just focused on everything that happened from the first film. We have all seen the first film 100s of times, no reason to really keep showing scenes from it.

So I was expecting Scut to have that heart to heart with Ralphie. I did like how he had that same douchie vibe to him but he seems like he’s changed for the better. Even though I watched the movie every year during the TBS marathon, i was grinning ear to ear with how Ralphies article honoring the old man tied into the opening of the first film. I was really waiting to see what they came up with to honor the old man, and I totally didn’t notice how they didn’t say “red rider air rifle” throughout the whole movie, so it absolutely hit the spot when they did the callback at the end. Oh I really enjoyed it for what it was and was surprised by how much I did. It's good to see Scott Schwartz get some time in a film from a major motion picture studio. He's been through it. Yes, the attic scene with all the sound clips drags a little bit, and I was annoyed by pretty much all the kids' acting at some point. but it ticked all the boxes for what they set out for it to be. I think it's a good enough tribute to Jean Shepherd and Bob Clark, and those ridiculous daydreaming vignettes from Ralphie had me rolling. I'm not gonna memorize the whole script or watch it every Christmas, but it served this 80s child well. BTW the Gravy Boat scene in It Runs In The Family/My Summer Story is glorious.

Nah “cranking” is a cheap way to avoid valid criticism. I loved the movie but it absolutely had its problems. The nostalgia and the callbacks definitely did ALOT of the heavy lifting and there were moments where I did feel like “damn is this all we’re gonna do?”. Not to mention, some of the jokes didn’t really land well. Still, I loved the movie for what it is and was a good, heartwarming trip that I will def recommend to fans of the first one, especially with how they honor the old man and how they did that great callback at the end.

I believe what everybody missed including myself at first was the fact that Ralph’s story in the newspaper was the story he related in the first Christmas Story. The fact that its called a Christmas Story shouts out to us it’s the genesis of The Christmas Story which was a tribute to his father and his desire for the red rider BB gun rifle. For full affect watch the recent movie first then watch the first one which he tells the story in the newspaper….very clever and subtle the way the story loops back to the original … well done 👍

I've yet to see it. Jean Shepherd was a writer / Radio personality that told stories of his youth growing up in the late 1930s early 40s he combined many elements from his book In God We Trust others pay cash, to form A Christmas story. The Original Story of the Red Rider BB Gun was also in this book. Actually Ralphie is Jean Shepherd so when he narrated this story he should have been a writer radio personality. Jean Shepherd oversaw the first movie in its production He hand picked Billingsly in appearance as he actually looked like that when he was young. Now Billingsly all grown up looks like Jean Shepherd did in the 1970s. Jean Shepherd made a cameo in the first movie He was the guy that stood on the santa line in the ovecoat and hat and called to Ralphie and Randy "Young man, young man the line ends here t be line begins over there !" That was Jean Shepherd. His Brother Randy has a site Flick lives. I was hoping he might be asked to make a cameo on this film. Jean Shepherd had an incredible life but unfortunately passed away a while back. But his stories are very movie worthy I would like to see Billingsly persue acting in other Jean Shepherd movie productions. He credits everyone but the true creator of this film Jean Shepherd Now is the time !

Compared to HOME SWEET HOME ALONE, A CHRISTMAS STORY CHRISTMAS might as well be THE FABLEMANS. Although MY SUMMER STORY is better, this new one was respectably decent, and I would rather watch it over A CHRISTMAS STORY LIVE any day. I think Bob Clark would've been proud.

Definitely a cash grab, but better than CS2 and the musical (I agree My Summer Story was pretty good). I rolled my eyes at the fantasies (Ralphie, you are no longer 9. Dial it back) and some of the shenanigan-vignettes. But we did laugh at some of the jokes, and I thought working the obituary-turned-memoir/tribute into how Ralphie gains success as a writer (bringing it full circle back to Jean Shepherd's original autobio stories) was sweet and fitting. Also the Old Man (or more likely Mom with support from her community) making things better with the perfect gifts, again. There was clearly some heart in this. Happy holidays!

Regardless, I don't have HBOMax and the film doesn't look worth the subscription. I'll just watch the original Christmas Story on DVD instead and be satisfied.

The things you count as negative are part of why I like this movie is good. I see nothing wrong with callbacks and nostalgia, as long as it's done in a manner that is well done. Thos movie even subverts and puts a new spin on some of the said callbacks. Also, whoever think that Randy, the scared kid who couldn't handle his smowsuit and hid under the sink grew up to be an ostentatious world traveler?
