FILM DESCRIPTION:
Hundreds of hopefuls congregate at a cattle call for Broadway dancers. A sour director, Zach (Michael Douglas), and his brusque assistant (Terrence Mann) whittle down the ranks until they're left with 16 dancers. All tell their life stories -- some tragic, some comic -- and explain their love of dance. Tension mounts when Cassie (Alyson Reed) -- once both a big star and the director's lover but now desperate for a part -- auditions. But Zach must choose only the best for his show.

    You know, I've loved this song for many years, but it just ocurred to me as a former teacher that he was picking on her because he saw her talent, which I used to do to my students, haha. I've had a variety of interpretations of this song, but that one just ocurred to me, lol, as I was thinking about it from her perspective and not the teacher's.

    I'm so excited because I'm gonna go to the High School of Performing Arts! I mean, I was dying to be a serious actress. I'm so excited because I'm gonna go to the High School of Performing Arts! I mean, I was dying to be a serious actress. Anyway, on the first day acting class- Mr Karp puts us on stage with our legs around each other, one in back of the other and he says: "Okay... we're going to do improvisations. Now, you're on a bobsled. It's snowing out. And it's cold...Okay...GO!" Ev'ry day for a week we would try to Feel the motion, feel the motion Down the hill. Ev'ry day for a week we would try to Hear the wind rush, hear the wind rush, Feel the chill. So I dug right down to the bottom of my soul To see what I had inside. Yes, I dug right down to the bottom of my soul And I tried, I tried. [Spoken] And everybody's goin' "Whooooosh, whooooosh ... I feel the snow... I feel the cold... I feel the air." And Mr. Karp comes up to me and he says, "Okay, Morales. What did you feel?" [sings] And I said..."Nothing, I'm feeling nothing," And he says "Nothing Could get a girl transferred." They all felt something, But I felt nothing Except the feeling That this bullshit was absurd! [Spoken] But I said to myself, "Don’t worry about it, it's only the first week. Maybe it's genetic. They don't have bobsleds in San Juan!" [sings] Second week, more advanced, and we had to Be a table, be a sportscar... Ice-cream cone. Mister Karp, he would say,"Very good, except Morales. Try, Morales, All alone." So I dug right down to the bottom of my soul To see how an ice cream felt. Yes, I dug right down to the bottom of my soul And I tried to melt. And the kids yelled, "Nothing!" They called me "Nothing" And Karp allowed it, Which really makes me burn. They were so helpful. They called me "Hopeless", Until I really didn't know Where else to turn. [Spoken] And Mr. Karp comes up to me and he says, "You know what Morales, I think you should transfer to Girl's High, You'll never be an actress, Never!" Jesus Christ! Went to church, praying, "Santa Maria, Send me guidance, send me guidance," On my knees. Went to church, praying, "Santa Maria, Help me feel it, help me feel it. Pretty please!" And a voice from down at the bottom of my soul Came up to the top of my head. And the voice from down at the bottom of my soul, Here is what it said: "This man is nothing! This course is nothing! If you want something, Go find a better class. And when you find one You'll be an actress." And I assure you that's what Fin'lly came to pass. Six months later I heard that Karp had died. So I dug way down to the bottom of my soul... And cried. 'Cause I felt... nothing.

    Theater buffs tend to be like that. They tend to be really overly-critical of film adaptations. I remember back when PAW Duggan made videos, he theorized the reason for this was because fans of the theater would see the stage versions first and basically associate the musical with that performance, so anything different just feels wrong to them.

    I disagree. This movie is perfectly classic to my childhood. One of the only movies I recorded from TV to VHS. I remember every song they sang, and was always way more vested in the dancers than the side plot drama-trauma series.

  • @C.V317

    @C.V317

    @@mombear5116 while that’s totally valid, the Zack-Cassie thing is frustrating because of how much time it takes away from everyone else because, let’s face it, it IS the main plot of the movie. Which makes sense; movies need single protagonists to revolve around, and the stage musical was entirely about a group of people who, being background characters, reveal they have lives and hopes and dreams we seldom consider. But in the movie, a lot of that gets undermined so Cassie can sing another song (or more annoyingly, steal a song someone else sang), depriving the others of the opportunities they usually get to be in the spotlight. I don’t think this movie is considered positively (especially considering how beloved the stage version is) because of its attempt to make the focus on any one person rather than everyone.
