A Chinese Wireless Electronic Groupset - Wheeltop EDS TX - First look
Спорт
A Chinese electronic groupset that really pushes the boundaries, and could easily rival Shimano, SRAM, Campagnolo, AND L-TWOO.
Last year, L-TWOO released the first electronic drop bar groupset from a Chinese manufacturer, their ERX. It was pretty groundbreaking, and although it had its issues, I’ve really enjoyed using it. Wheeltop has now entered the game!
In 2022 Wheeltop released their EDS OX, an electronic mountain bike groupset, and have been working on this bike in the background ever since.
It’s IPX67 water resistant, completely wireless, offers 7-13 speed cassette compatibility, is available in both hydraulic disc brake, and rim brake version, and prices start at just £650!
In this unboxing, I'll give you my first impressions, show you the build quality, take you through the companion app, and ultimately show you a small issue I faced with the front derailleur.

Only a moron would ignore millions of road bikes on Rim brakes that could be easily upgraded to Electronic Shifting. Shimano is in bed with the Bike companies in order to sell Disc brake based frames. This whole debacle is about you not buying a new frame that's why Shimano and Sram are headed to Disc brake on their electronic shifting hardware.
As always Luke, You help us out all the time

Good day Luke! I wrote to you with a question but I think I found my answer in this video. Just had to listen closely. Was looking for e shifting with rim brakes.
Looking forward to the OTR review, my mouse pointer is hovering over the order button!
Thank you Luke
Nice review Luke, thank you. I will save the APK and all related files to the app, just in case they patch the auto trim feature.
As always a great video. One thing I wanted to point out however, is that the rear derailleur plates didn’t appear through the video to be forged carbon. They looked like they were made of unidirectional (UD) carbon. Forged carbon is generally characterized by chopped carbon fibers oriented at random angles. Those parts appeared to have continuous fibers that ran the length of the part.
Nothing I love more then a freshly baked Trace Velo video 🥖🥖🥖

Their MTB wireless received good reviews, Berm Peak made a review on it and it looked almost close to a SRAM AXS, hoping for the best with this groupset!

I have had the same experinece with my test version. When you do the initial calibration, you should be in the big ring and on the 11 tooth on the casette. So send the front mech all the way to the big ring and rear all the way to the 11 tooth cog in initial calibration and then to fine tuning in the first menu item after this. I have had no luck with getting consistency from the front mech, it was working perfectly for a month and then could not get it working consistently, no clue why, even enlisted the help of my LBS in China. Rear mech is absolutely excellent though.

Ohh OK, interesting 🤔 I'll have another play around, and see if I can get the issue to come back. Hopefully WheelTop will get this issue patched out soon.
Nice stash ! I have this groupset for a couple of days now, it is very good ! It was paired out of the box, so I didn't have to go through that part :) The brakes are nice !! They mention "proprietary" setup, but the pads are shimano road l03a compatible, and the olives are identical to magura's, so loads of options there. I had the same issue with the front derraileur after I tried a "initial calibration" in the wrong position, it needs to be done in the BIG ring, otherwise it tries to move inboard more than it can, and gets stuck. In my case, I set the "initial position" from the app to the small chainring and the issue happened. After setting the initial cal to the big ring, it has been solid since. Fine tunning on the front is nice, but needed loads of trial and error ! 2 of the "files" are the positions for the chainrings, but the other ones are the values by which the "trimming" will move. So, to explain myself, setting those to '0, means the derraileur will not do any trim. I had an issue where the chain would rub on the big ring trimmed position, as it was moving too far inboard and had to reduce that. GEAR 3 is the amount of trimming the front derraileur will do in the big ring in case it occurs to you as well.

Thanks so much for this review
This is the first time ever that I get my hands on the product faster than you, luke. I will see how this groupset perform after I installed it. The Chinese users do agree on a few thing though. 1. Packaging foam is crap, a lot of burnt foam was left from laser cut process. 2 The rear mech is good, up there with 7170, even better. 3. Front mech is slow and hard to setup (but uasable).

Is it possible to change trimming interval of front derailleur? There is an option in app but I can't change any parameter
@zhuyufan1186

@@lovebike Hi, the front derailleur trimming is locked from factory. Wheeltop guys just want us to use that limit screw and initial position to dial in the setup. It seems that you will need to contact wheeltop's aftersell staff to give that function to yo. At the moment, I am using only the limit screw to make my drivetrain relatively chain rub free. But I do wish I have the trimming. The initial position setup only makes my front derailleur shifts funny and I have already broke a front derailleur...

I still don't think those are cheap enough to justify the possible headaches that come with them. Spend a little more for Shimano/SRAM or stick with mechanical for me. Great review as always! 🥖
Been waiting to see you get your hands on these. I'm still using 10 and 11s in UCI CX and MTB races. Getting to run any amount of gears is great. Hated how the big S companies lock you into 12s. Chains on 12s are inherently more prone to failure under high torque. There's guys replacing chains every weekend! Also with less support from companies you'll see some guys start to go to whatever works without breaking the bank.
Cool new groupset. That is why I follow you, thanks! How is that little one of yours doing?
Dang, I've not been on KZread much the last month after getting injured and having surgery. Then I pop back on to see I've missed TWO Trace Velo videos that are very much relevant to things I've been looking at! Thank you for all your work in putting together such great content! Nice stache, btw 🔥
I don’t know why it’s never occurred to me that 11/12/13/whatever speed can be a software setting on electronic groups. Kinda brilliant
One thing I think wheeltop and ltwoo apps really need is the ablility to set multiple custom cassette profiles. That way you can swap out different cassettes without having to do the whole indexing manually every time. It's also great for trainers cause you don't need a good cassete for that so you can just buy a cheap durable 7s cassette f.e., pop the bike on the trainer select the profile and off you go. Also satellite shifters is a big personal wish of mine. They're the main reason I still consider ultegra (can get them working on 105 too, but it's a huge pain in the ass)
@andrewm13

I just bought an ltwoo egr setup, and I did a deep dive into their documentation and published info while I'm waiting for it to arrive. They have a 2024 catalogue PDF on their website that shows all of their groupsets and all available compatible products, and it shows some kind of trigger shift product that is compatible with their eGR and 2024 eRX & eR9 products, but not their 2023 e groupsets. They call it a Wireless Electronic Controller, but that's the most detailed description I can find. Despite the fact that they have product numbers (SL-E9001 for eRX and SL-E8001 for eGR and eR9), I can't find a single other reference or description for this thing anywhere on the web. I can't tell if it's meant to be some kind of companion controller or satellite shifter or if it's meant to be trigger shifter for flat bars. But, presumably, it looks like they have some kind of plans for expanding on the system with other, optional, controllers.
@invisiblescout6335

@@andrewm13 the catalogue states that it's for flat bar 1x use, but just the fact there is something at all is interesting. From the same catalogue it seems er9 isn't getting an erx-esque update, but it also supports that same trigger shifter
The ERX front shifter patent infingement was not about microadjusting in the go, it was about shimano FD slightly overshifting every time it is actuated and then instantly returning to the set position.
When are you testing it out? 😁 We're already looking forward for the video

Wow, this groupset is going to sell a lot of units. The fact you can change speeds is amazing. This means that all those gravel bike and various disc brake bikes sold between about 2013 and 2020 with post mount brakes can now be upgraded really cheaply! In fact Luke, that would be a good idea for a video! Get an early disc brake bike, like with 8 or 9 speed claris or Sora and fully upgrade it to this , on the cheap! Will definitely get a lot of views!
@andrewm13

You know what just came to my mind? A good way to build up old tandem frames. I see some older ones on marketplace or CL, but the condition (and old design) of the drivetrains and the thought of how much effort and money it would cost to upgrade them is enough to make me stop dreaming. But... Throwing a (hopefully eventually) cheap electronic (wireless!) 2x9speed drivetrain with a path to upgrade the brakes to hydraulic rim calipers is really, really exciting. Excellent shifting, excellent braking, easy and cheap upgrade. What a cool thing to look forward to.
And nice mustache Luke 😂😂😂
Got the same issue with the back derailleur. It moved inside. Fixed same way as in the video.
hell yeah finally
You definitely need a mullet to go with that mustache 🥖🥖🥖🥖
I'm intrigued. And it's good to see more players. I particularly like the flexibility in gear settings (they should ALL do that). BUT, the pricing seems quite high for an incomplete groupset and a brand new product with no lifecycle proof on it. Full kit of better known electronic shift sets can be had for only a couple of hundred more these days.
I can't wait for Luke to deploy this new groupset on his 3-speed cassette build. We all know that if you only have 3 cogs at the rear it is especially a pain to shift across them all manually -- you need electronic shifting like no one else.
$800 for the rim brake version would double the value of my 2010 Roubaix. I can dream though.

Here’s to hoping that all these teething problems these “high-end“ Chinese electronics have get sorted like Ltwoo did. Interesting way they circumnavigated the Sram patent on two identical batteries for the front and rear derailer. While it does come at a convenience cost, at least you can put this on any bike that has external cable routing. And top marks for them including rim brakes as an option. That’s going to make a lot of people happy.
The largest chainring known to accomodate is 55T while the biggest cassette size is 40T at a stretch. Officially, the front numbers from WheelTop is 53T front and 36T back.
Wheeltop going in on the Instagram advertising - I would guestimate every 5-10 ads are for this groupset in my feed (wonder why? 🤣)
Seems like a very good groupset at the price point! Great un boxing review Luke. The rim brake set, does it come with a set of rim brakes?
@TraceVelo

So from what I understand, with the rim brake version, no there are no rim brake calipers supplied, which did strike me as slightly odd...
This allows more people to have competitive bikes, and COMPETITIVE CYCLING in the U.S is simply off the charts for participation. A full comp Chinese bike is your best bet for the season by far. You could run 2 or three WORKS bikes for the same price as any other MADONE level bling machine.
This looks promising! I can guarantee they will sell many units. I’ll definitely be getting myself this group set in the future. Also you should maybe do a Ali express power meter review.
