Tarantula hawks are chill as they have little to fear. 1/4" stinger hanging out of a 3-4" iridescent wasp is spooky though. It's a neurotoxin that's big on pain but doesn't have lasting effects. Don't give up on AZ in the summer, just get over 7,000 ft.

For future reference. Tarantula hawks love milkweeds, soapberry trees, and mesquite trees for the nectar. And you camped right next to a mesquite.

They are pretty big so sometimes when they fly around you I think its a small bird lol! so that may be why haha
