A Charlie Brown Christmas: Reminding Us That Boomers Were Millennials Once, Too

Generational conflict is at an all-time high. But whatever age we might be, we can all see a bit of ourselves when watching Charlie Brown and the gang during Christmas.

So I came across your video of The Great Gatsby and the unreliable nature of Nick and I then proceed to watch every video you had. I really enjoyed your commentary on Andrew Garfields performance in silence and your heartfelt unraveling of Toy Story 4 and Sigur Ros. I think your writing and editing are very strong and your use of background music and your very sharp timing enhances your words to the nth degree. I really enjoy your work and am excited for your next video.

Thanks for the kind and encouraging feedback! Unfortunately, I can't make videos as often as I would like to, but I am actively working on the next one now. Hopefully, I'll be able to release it in a week or two!

Didn’t the Boomers say that about the previous generation as well? I fact isn’t that what every current generation says about the previous one

This video sums up my perspective on generational issues. Boomers tweaked the noses of the Greatest Generation because they weren't reforming fast enough. Millennials are all over that with the Boom. Just be careful, kids, that you never become what makes you so angry.

I used to ridicule/throw anything they said against my generation into the trash. Honestly, as I enter my 20s. I seem to agree more and more with what the Boomers are saying (to us).

I agree. BUT...............IF he keeps at this, and keeps the quality of these videos at this level, I'm certain it'll BLOW UP. That's how it works. You make amazing content for about 3 years, no one knows about it, and then one day.....BAM. And it goes nuts from there. I think that's in this channel's future. The problem is....there's LOTS of channels with similarly amazing content that go for about 3 years....and then just....give up. You can't do that. If you keep on keeping on....the support starts getting exponential. I hope the creator of this channel sees this, or at least knows this. Because this channel HAS that potential. I first found this channel through the Sigur Ros video....and was shocked by the relatively low view count. But that will change.....IF he sticks with this.

While I enjoyed this video, and I agree with your analysis on the similarity of boomers then and millennials now in terms of how popular culture reflected them, I can’t help but feel like your essay falls short of where the real differences are. Here in the UK, one in five millennials are worth over £1,000,000 and one in six own a second home. Meanwhile millennials struggle to get on the housing market, with the cost of living dwarfing that of their parents. While the inter-generational cultural tussle continues as it always has, there is a legitimate basis from which to claim that the youth have not had it so tough in living memory, and that resentment comes from more than just a juvenile rejection of authority and wisdom. Sources: Financial Times, “One in five UK baby boomers are millionaires” Telegraph, “One in six baby boomers owns a second home”

I definitely agree! I don't mean to dismiss legitimate generational issues and inequalities, because they certainly are real. I'm a mid-generation Millennial (born 1988) who teaches a bunch of Gen Z'ers in high school and has two young kids of my own so I'm acutely aware of many of the problems. Nevertheless, I still believe more can be accomplished through empathetic discussion than acrimonious argument. I suppose this video is just an attempt to nudge us in that direction. Thanks for the feedback!

Thought & Word Thanks for your clarification; I agree that ultimately we must find a way to bring people together into what the UK Labour Party call a “broad church” if we hope to combat the numerous current social, political, environmental and economic issues affecting us today, and this essay makes that point very well :) Keep up the awesome work, I love how this format of content is flourishing on KZread right now: long may that continue!

Awesome video. I think maybe the appeal of Charlie Brown apart from the fun zany jokes is it places him in this ethereal angst that many people can relate to. He's way too young to be worrying about the things he is, but can't the same be said for a lot of older people trying to still figure it out?

The religious undertone can't be missed though. The greatest generation, the boomers, and even gen x, all had some shared religious belief, or at least some shared religious values, that could unite them in the virtues of love and self-sacrifice. Linus explains to Charlie Brown, and to everyone, that Jesus, born in a humble manger, not shiny aluminum Christmas trees, is what Christmas is all about. That is why the young, cruel, and narcissistic other children (as children from every generation always are), are able to be grateful for Charlie Brown's tree, wish him a merry Christmas, and all sing a classic Christian Christmas hymn together. What I fear about the millennials, and perhaps also for gen z, is that they no longer share these religious beliefs or values, and thus I'm not sure how effective Linus's call to maturity and virtue will be for them.

Kent Young we don’t need religion to have values. I’d argue that having self-awareness and humility is better than having to read a book to figure out right from wrong. Having compassion isn’t exclusive to religious people.

Heartfelt video, but it feels in my opinion like a far-fetched attempt at seeking intergenerational solidarity, at the cost of reductionism. These millenial stereotypes portrayed in Peanuts speak exactly to the neoliberal, capitalist realism of the baby boomer generation: the supposed "entitlement" of Sally and the "incompetence" of Charlie are portrayed as character flaws. The former reflects the neoliberal ideology that one must "earn their place in life", the latter reflecting the neoliberal love of strength dominating the weak, etc. The stereotypes are ultimately the butt of the joke. All this reveals is that the capitalist atmosphere of the time in which this media was made, propagates the ideological Zeitgeist of its time, and that the intergenerational conflict is just a reflection of an ideological conflict with the other side (the millenials who are beginning to grow disillusioned with neoliberalism) now fleshed out. Even Lucy's wish for real estate, well, that's quite clearly a joke directed at the disconnect between child and adult wants, reaffirming materialism, the past status quo as a more "mature" want. This contrasts the stereotypical disregard for materialism by millenials. I appreciate what you're trying to do, some sort of vague sense of "unity", but it ultimately doesn't address the ideological differences that actually cause the current intergenerational divide, and so any solidarity that doesn't address the ideological basis of this divide merely creates a short-term armistice.

You make some sharp, well articulated points. I honestly don't fundamentally disagree with any of them. I suppose part of my goal in the video was to call out some juvenoia without stoking the generational divide too much (it is a Christmas video, after all). But, to your point, it's hard to have one's cake and eat it too.

@@ThoughtWord Well, then I'm sincerely glad we see eye to eye. Sorry for coming off as a bit aggressive though. But you're right, as I describe it as an "armistice", and you remind me of this being a Christmas video, it's almost as if 1914 football all over again. Great channel, can't wait until the ol' algorithm picks you up!

Today, Gen Alpha is being attacked, but unlike all the “”woke”” pronouns and climate change matters that boomers despise, its because of these adolescents’ humor and “memes”. I mean seriously, no matter how racist and conservative our parents and grandparents are, while calling us morally bankrupt and disgraceful, us 18-30s have still dropped all of these complaints to the side, and redirected our anger at… teenagers that laugh at a toilet with a head in it.

"All of the Peanuts characters behave just like millennials." Wrong! Traditional values, capitalism, family, spirituality, introspection, god, girls being girls, boys being boys.... they act nothing like millennials. You need to do a little more thinking on this one.
