The memory would never have been so memorable if Messi had won the World Cup like 10 years ago. @@Lee-fc3yf I understand but so was Maradona and he was doing it with no referee protection against the toughest and most brutal defenders arguably ever playing in Italy scoring ridiculous goals on below average football surfaces. Also, he took a small team in Napoli and won the league in Italy where such a team had no business winning a league against Milan, Inter, Juventus etc. If Messi can go to a small club and win a title, then maybe we can compare the two. But I don't think he's capable of it. Messi has always played at the big clubs with great players around him. Maradona was a one man show. He transcended the sport.

I was looking at goal record internationally and couldn't believe the difference. Club wise the chasm is vast it's not even worth talking about...it's a nonsense to say Messi would nor have some better in that era...Messi has been hacked down, stamped on, elbowed, shouldered, rugby tackled many many times...career ending challenges flying in...but this is forgotten. Maradona was great but the gap in achievements is vast for excuses like you have made here.

Maradona perhaps was not playing at that level for 18 years which of course is a big achievement, but he performed football miracles. Messi has not. Messi always had good players around him compared to what Maradona had. Messi also had referee protection, Maradona did not. Messi played on lovely football pitches. Maradona did not. I don't even think Messi is in the top 2 best players of all time when you have Pele in the mix. Messi is amazing, unbelievable, the player of the modern era perhaps. A truly great player! But the best of all time? No.
