When I was a teenager I loved collecting car brochures for cars I liked and admired and was impressed with how most companies were compliant and helpfull, even Bentley and Aston Martin were happy to provide despite me blatantly being too young to buy or even have the money. Something I will never forget...... When I tried Bristol Motor Cars they tried to qualify the enquiry speaking with my father, thinking he was the origin of the request. In the end once they realised it was just me, they ended up only sending me a one page leaflet. Years later when I was finally able to afford to buy and invest in such cars, I remembered how I was treated when a young poor enthusiast. Low and behold Bristol has gone bust and has never been in my radar since that early enquiry. Yet Aston Martin and Bentley have had my custom for years.

I did this too, under the pretence of doing a school project on cars. First issue of Top Gear magazine 1993 had a manufacturer's directory at the back with the freefone numbers. I called each and every one, I think everyone sent me something including AC, Lotus, Rolls Royce and even Marcos. The ones I got no luck from were Lamborghini, Ferrari and Maserati, all managed by Maranello Consessionaires who time and time again said they'd send me something and never did. I also don't think I got anything from Porsche but by far the best was VW who delivered and embarrassing amount of literature, key rings and posters, the post man must have thought it was a joke, I still remember opening the porch door and seeing piles of brochures on the floor, plus the newly printed smell clogging up the air! And a man from BMW called up after a few days and spoke to my mum, apparently he was very concerned about what this "school project" was about and what I'd written 😂

Michael I am so really glad to hear that you are a blessed Grandfather with male descendants to pass your legacy on to … so many of the cars you have owned and driven mean a lot to a lad like me from the Antipodes and the late Fifties … not so many of the Ferraris but pretty much the bulk of your memories are almost like I was watching. Yet I was right across the other side of the world and have never made the trip to Europe. I’ve had the pleasure of Restoring Mk2 Jaguars in NZ and working with many English immigrants in my time and appreciate that the little things they made and were proud of helped build your eclectic society … nice to see you survived the big C for now, may it be history … a most pleasurable couple of hours in your virtual presence as many will agree … keep on for the Grandies …. Granddads forever !

I stumbled onto this video early this morning while roaming around here and I have now made myself late for my job after spending two hours uninterrupted of enjoying these stories. Very enjoyable stories, which struck a note with me, as I was also born in 1947 & am now enjoying our grandchildren much more than I ever imagined. Your tale of the Ferrari wheel collapsing reminded me of a young woman who I worked with who was raising her sisters two young children. They were orphaned when their father (a dentist) and mother were killed (1975 ?) in a V12 Ferrari whose wheel disintegrated at high speed and they crashed off the road. This was in Australia, where I live, however I spent a few informative years in UK in the late 60s to mid 70s and remember well the petrol-crisis era. The worth of the UK Pound was incredibly low. Incidentally I bought a Bristol motor car from the Filton factory (where they were making the Concorde in the next hanger) and shipped it back to Australia. On arrival the next car driven off the ship after mine was, I reckon, that Miura. I recall falling in love with it and immediately thinking I had made a big mistake by not buying a Miura instead !

One of the best videos I have ever watched. I can relate to many of the things Michael mentioned - as we share the same birth date. Michael mentioned Mike Youngs garage - they fitted a 3litre engine into my Mk3 Cortina back in the day.

What a time to be alive, a position to be in, and a great storyteller. I really enjoyed this new version with more stories. The British passion for combustion-engined stuff is still unmatched. Thank you very much for the perfect editing: pictures when you want them, drive-bys to contextualize the anecdotes. Epic. By the way, at some point in life I have to own a vs12 to be able to say: Sir I think I'm running on only 10 cylinders!

Hi Jay. That has to be the longest you tube I've ever watched. I loved every bit of it and can't believe a lot of this happened in the parts of Essex I was brought up in. I love your reviews so please keep it up 👍
