A Cab Ride Up The Vitznau Rigi Railway - Europe's First Mountain Railway.
We travel on one of the new Stadler built trains and pass some of the older trains. We see some amazing views of the snow capped Alps and surrounding area.

Fascinating! Spitze! I don’t normally enjoy ‘rear view’ type videos featuring railways but this one was entirely appropriate, exciting and informative ! With the rear view I could really appreciate the steep climb. When we passed the modern substation with all the convention vdntiltstion grilled I could almost feel the humming from the 1.5kV rectifiers and heat from the transformers as we passed. It’s over 50 years since I last rode on this line with my late friend who was one of the Curators at the Lucerne Railway Museum…he insisted we go up together (we travelled in the front of the train) and we had a fabulous time in the glorious mid-June weather. Many thanks and I really enjoyed the backwards view trip…with excellent videography! Rob in Bournemouth, England.

Are you referring to the white building next to Romiti Felsentor Station?

  • @atlanticcoastexpress

What I think is a substation is the building on the right @ 14.43 minutes into the climb. It’s placed to provide the maximum current in the double track section and the air vents suggest to me there’s at least a number of air cooled rectifier panels inside! It would be interesting to know what the average load is on this section. Very many years ago I looked after a standard gauge electrified railway (no steep gradients!) on the Isle of Wight off the south coast of England which used former London Underground trains running on with 3rd rail 750V d.c., this railway was re-quipped with more modern trains recently. Thanks for a truly superb video. Regards, Rob in Bournemouth.

Such a beautiful video that I could sit down for hours watching over and over again. Such breath taking scenery. I'm getting on a bit in years and find walking a bit more of a struggle but I would love to walk back down at my own pace. Like all of your videos this one was excellent.

Nice to see the older trains still running. I went in 2011. They have 2 steam locos and the original vertical boiler loco was in the museum in Luzern. The first 6 locos were vertical locos. It was originally 2 companies that merged in 1992, formally VRB and ARB. Electrified in 1906 for ARB and VRB some 31 years after. The current steam locos 16 and 17 were built in 1923 and1925

I spent many summers on Rigi, first in an apartment at Rigi-Staffel, then at Felsentor Zendo. Too old to travel to Europe now. I wept all the way to the summit to see these beloved views. Thank you. Please do another in summer, and show your audience the views from Staffel and summit. Is the awful white tent/auditorium gone from Staffel? I couldn't see it, but maybe from the snow.

The line up Rigi was the first mountain railway that I experienced in Switzerland. It was in 1966 and I was living in Zürich at the time so went to Arth-Goldau and up the other line. However, it was February and both the lines had to terminate at Rigi Staffel as from onwards the snow was so thick that the lines were both impassable. So it was shank's pony for the last bit to Rigi Kulm.
