A Building Shaped by Light Austin Central Library, 2019 (Third Place)

Architecture Firm Highlighted: Lake Flato Architects
This film won the Third Place Prize in the AIA Film Challenge 2019.
Overlooking Shoal Creek and Lady Bird Lake, the new Austin Central Library is a building shaped by light and designed to respond to the context of its place. The client and project team set aspirational sustainability and design metrics for the project, including two key goals: It would be the most daylit library in the country, and it would serve as a water conservation model for institutional buildings.
The heart of the building is the six-story atrium, which provides daylight for more than 80% of regularly occupied spaces. The client envisioned an iconic, civic hub where locals connect with their community by pursuing a variety of interests. The facility is based on flexible, blended spaces including indoor collections and reading rooms, outdoor reading porches, maker spaces, outdoor dining, a technology center, cafe, bookstore, 350-seat event center, art gallery, demonstration kitchen, and 200-car parking garage. Integrated artworks, interspersed throughout the library building, enhance this technology-focused environment by showcasing local and national artists. The unique rooftop butterfly garden and reading porches draw visitors to connect with nature.

Looks like it's about everything except books nor a depository of knowledge. The building has nice light management, but the design seems to have wandered off from the core purpose and has become some kind of theme park missing the theme; books and knowledge. But I guess that's what one gets when you use a committee to design something? Does anyone else get that impression?

Still has plenty of books. This video doesn't focus on the "boring" bookshelves, because that's not what grabs attention. The building balances the different uses very well.

Books remain a central part of our services. The space gives room for wonder and exploration. It's not only a place to check out books - it's an AMAZING - place to check out books. I work there and am humbled every day by the opportunity to serve customers in such a wonderful library.

@@suzannyfeler296 If that's the case, the video did a poor job of showing that.

The content highlights light & architecture. But if you watched the video with an open mind, you would have noticed the different places where people can gain knowledge in this amazing library. There was tons of seating, study rooms, books, computers, and an innovation lab. Instead of focusing on the negative, you probably would have seen or heard where the books were and the services they offered to expand not only an adult but a child's knowledge! Seems like a great library and this video did a great job showcasing that plus more! Also, the title of the KZread video literally says a building shaped by light. If you wanted more, search a video that highlights their services because this channel highlights architecture.
