It was the same for Toy Story. Tim Allen was in the middle of Home Improvement, Don Rickles had his Late Night Shows, Jim Varney had Ernest P Worrell, Annie Potts had Love and War, yeah, Pixar mostly has TV stars playing their roles.

Dr Smith from Lost in Space played Manny, and he even does the "Oh the pain!" schtick. I'm convinced him and Ratzenburger were little nods to the parents in the audience. I'd bet money that Pixar wanted to get somebody from the old Batman show to do a voice, but it never panned out.

Brad Garrett from Everybody Loves Raymond. Technically CBS, but still, 90s sitcom stars was the casting focus.

I had the pleasure of meeting Dave Foley (Flik) last month, and he was really nice and friendly.

This movie was actually perfectly cast IMO

So was Ashley Tisdale. I mean, you don't see her in this voice actor video, but she was another kid who auditioned to play Dot, and ended up playing Lead Blueberry Scout. I know without being told that it is because Ashley is 4 years older than Hayden, and they wanted the younger voice talent to play Dot. Still, I am sure Ashley and Hayden were both very talented actors since they were kids in the 90s. A Bug's Life was not their star-making role, but it is important to know that it was their first movie and their first animated part. Being a Pixar movie, it must have made them more popular to get other good roles growing up. They have played many memorable characters in both live-action and animation film and television since then. May 4, 2020, 6:42pm

Jim Carrey was originally considered for the role of Flik before the role was later given to Dave Foley.

3:26 Richard Kind is great! We don't give Molt enough credit. For most of Molt's scenes in the movie, we know he is not evil like his brother Hopper, and Molt is the only kind grasshopper in A Bug's Life, hence the last name of his actor. Molt seems genuinely terrified of Hopper after Hopper gets angry at him for questioning his authority. 😢 What seems like a moment of stupidity when Molt interrupts Hopper with an irrelevant story about a bird that almost ate him - could really be Molt giving the ants a subliminal tip on how to defeat his abusive brother. How else do you think Atta knew "even Hopper's afraid of birds" later, after Flik's warriors worked together to save Dot from a bird? None of the other grasshoppers wanted to go back to Ant Island during the rainy season, so maybe if Molt became the new president of the grasshoppers after the bird from the middle of the film fed Hopper to her three chicks, he allowed them all to stay in Mexico instead of taking food from other ant colonies. Then again, maybe he never moved up from Vice President at all. Since all of the other grasshoppers flew away either during Flik's bird scare or when it was raining, and Molt was still on Ant Island the next day, joining P.T. Flea's circus, he probably never did anything with the other grasshoppers after they lost Hopper. April 3, 2020, 8:43pm

We've also lost Roddy McDowall, Jonathan Harris, Madeline Kahn and Alex Rocco. I don't think we should bother asking for a sequel to this movie anyway, because those six did a rather flawless job on their roles, and a sequel would be pretty disappointing without them.

Roddy McDowall died before the release of A Bugs Life (1998).

I was really surprise that Denis Leary did the voice of Francis, before he did the voice of Diego for ICE AGE.

I think the reason why Dave Foley thought there was a mistake that he got to play the lead character, Flik is because...he always saw himself as a...secondary person, like how he voices Dan's friend Chris in Dan vs, for example. Because Dave Foley originally auditioned to voice *Slim* (David Hyde Pierce's part), and the much more expensive "leading man" star powers of Leonardo DiCaprio and Hugh Jackman also tried out for Flik. A Bug's Life will always be a special time in Ashley Tisdale's and Hayden Panettiere's life. It wasn't a star-making role for them, but it still opened doors for more acting jobs for them because it was their first animated role and first movie role. They worked in a lot of other cartoons and video games since A Bug's Life. Before this, Ashley's biggest role was Kate Lionheart in MGM Sing-Alongs, and Hayden's biggest role was Sarah Roberts in One Life to Live. April 6, 2020, 11:44am

My favorite is Finding Nemo. I actually like A Bug’s Life more than all of them except Finding Nemo.

This comment is dedicated to the memory of David L. Lander (June 22, 1947-December 4, 2020), who voiced Thumper. I am sorry this dedication comment is one week late.

They got some of the biggest stars at the time, Julia from Seinfeld, David from Fraser, and Brad from Everybody Loves Raymond.

I haven't seen this film for nearly 14 years, my gosh how much I love Pixar and now I know all these wonderful people who bring magic to our homes and lives! 💙💙💙

Im seeing people talk a lot about Hayden and David. Not a lot of people are talking about Spacey from Hopper. Incredibly a perfect voice for almost a perfect villain. There is a lot of malice, menace, and presence to each dialogue and it really shines for a fucking BUG of all things. Also, every time he dialogues with Richard Kind, its comedy gold.

Maybe their characters make some of the same facial expressions as them based on how they act in their recording booth, or you just see a part of the voice actor in that character once you get a feel for the person behind the voice. March 28, 2020, 1:27am

Disney used to be so magical. I can't explain it, but there was just a certain energy and vibe surrounding every single production. Now they really, really, really suck. It's a shame, but I'm so glad we have these wonderful classics.

I love Heimlich, Hopper, and Molt. I was honestly surprised when I saw Kevin Spacey play the voice for Hopper; it’s funny because Hopper and Kevin act sorta the same. Although Kevin Spacey is not evil; I also noticed that Kevin is also a little shy while being interviewed; Unlike his brother, Molt, who loves the attention. Heimlich also loves the attention! Joe Ranft totally fit Heimlich’s voice. Joe Ranft is very funny; he makes me laugh and is just very friendly. I was devastated when he got into that car crash in 2005. He will be forever missed. 😢 And for Molt he’s my favorite character. Me and him have a lot in common! We’re both friendly, honest, and a little awkward in some aspects. I was happy to see Richard Kind playing his voice! I’ve seen Richard Kind in lots of movies like Tom and Jerry and Inside Out; And Richard Kind fit the role perfectly! And I hope in the future we get a Bug’s Life 2. But they will have to find new voice actors for Gypsy, Manny, and Heimlich.

@@elimorris1334 Agreed. Robert De Niro was John Lassester's first idea to play Hopper, but Robert repeatedly turned it down. Maybe he didn't want to work in an animated movie for kids. That being said, it sure is great that John Lasseter met Kevin Spacey at the 1995 Academy Awards, because I do not think Robert De Niro's voice would have worked as well as Kevin's. Well, maybe they haven't, but even though April spends a lot more time in voice acting than Kevin Spacey, I am sure there is probably still other actors in A Bug's Life that were in something else with April Winchell. I know why voice acting takes a lot of auditioning. There is less time and effort needed to...memorize lines, and you can do as many voices as you want for however many characters your movie or TV series has, but Brad Bird taught me that voice acting is no paid vacation. As the actor who voiced as Edna Mode in his own film when no professional actress could pull it off, Brad knows the experience of what good voice acting takes firsthand. March 13, 2020, 6:08pm

Even though Kevin and April are clearly different types of actors, I still wish I could have them in a cartoon film or singular episode together - you know, just to remind them of the good old times when they were in the musical Gypsy (which is also the name of the butterfly from A Bug's Life). Unless Kevin's sexual harassment charges made April too afraid to work with him again, and there may be another reason she already wanted nothing to do with him before all that stuff camp up which we do not know about.
