Proof that you don’t have to be in Chicago, New York, Amsterdam, Berlin, etc. to have a world-class orchestra. A Coruña? I never even heard of it until I discovered this orchestra a few years ago. Now I want to live there so I can go to every concert of this wonderful group! (David Bushnell reigns!)

Stanislaw Skrowaczewski, October 3, 1923 - February 21, 2017 It was my great privilege -- and unforgettable experience -- to have been in the audience at Symphony Hall in San Diego in the mid-eighties to hear Skrowaczewski conduct a concert that included a stunning performance of Anton Bruckner's 7th (with the cymbal crash). Afterward in the Green Room, I thanked him for a glorious performance, and also for one of my cherished recordings, the one he had made with Artur Rubinstein of the Chopin 1st Concerto. He lit up with a smile from ear to ear and said, "Ah, Artur; we had so much fun making that record," then clasped my hand. Rest In Peace, Maestro. And again, thank you.

As I have said before, I think this is the World Best performance of the Bruckner 4th on YT. Arguably, the World Best period. And this time I thought how sad that Bruckner didn't get to hear his 4th Symphony played here. I suspect he never got to hear it played this well by people who loved his work. Even though the Minnesota (Minneapolis Symphony) Orchestra was shaped early on by such luminaries as Eugene Ormandy, Antal Dorati and Dimitri Mitropoulos, it was Skrowaczewski who brought that orchestra (over the course of two + decades) into a new age. RIP Stan. You are sorely missed! I'm sure even the brilliant current conductor, Osmo Vaanska, would agree that Stan had an extraordinary legacy with that great orchestra. Of course, though just a tad longer longer than the 4th (and 7th), we really must also include Bruckner's mighty 8th, "The Apocalyptic" (and, while we are at it, what he referred to as "My contrapuntal masterpiece," the 5th). Oh heck, for we Brucknerians, there really isn't a dud in his symphonic canon, from the Study Symphony in F-minor (the so-called double-zero) and Symphony 0 "Die Nulte" in D-minor on through to his farewell to life, the 9th. As one wag once remarked, Bruckner was God's thank-you note to humanity. In lesser hands, listening to a Bruckner symphony can be an interminable ordeal, but when conductor and orchestra make that spiritual connection and tread in the master's footsteps, life takes on new meaning.
