I use to believe fear and love is equal. But that's not true. Love is received. Fear is instilled. Facing your fears is harder than falling out of love. Thus, fear last longer than love.

I always loved how Sonny kept saying, "Don't forget what I'm telling you," throughout the movie. Considering this is based on a true story, Chazz Palminteri seemed to have done his best to condense all the wisdom he gained from the man into a movie roughly 2 hours long. I hope the real Sonny knows that he never forgot what he told him, wherever he is on the other side.

Yep. Obviously it is a fictional story, but in The Sopranos, that is a line Tony wasn't able to navigate. He went past the line of fear to where a good number of the people working with and under him hated him and felt it would be better off removing him from the equation entirely. To be fair, he probably never should have been the boss to begin with. He was insecure, hotheaded and gluttonous in every aspect of his life.

I never realized that when C asks the question "Is it better to be loved or feared?" it's in direct contrast to when Lorenzo explains to a young C that people on Lorenzo's bus "love" him and the people in Sonny's world "fear" him. Obviously, this is the question that C struggles with throughout the film. Friggin' beyond brilliant writing.

I worked in a kitchen where the head chef would always be nice when you first met him, develop into sarcasm when you got to know him more and would go absolutely ballistic in the kitchen if you made a mistake. You feared giving him a reason to be sarcastic that you look embarrassed and definitely feared to make a mistake in the kitchen. Safe to say for him he was respected massively but liked at the same time. He had that fine line with people to like him and fear to get on the wrong side of him.

I am so glad Chazz Palminteri ended up becoming somewhat famous (he never became an A-lister, but he did appear in a lot of movies across DeNiro). Few have worked as hard as him on his dream. He was broke at age 38, doing the entire "Bronx Tale" act as one man, until DeNiro saw it and wanted to make it into a film.

Mothers have died for their young because they have loved them. Men have sacrificed themselves for their families because they loved them. I once knew a young man who loved his girlfriend so much that he fought the man who robbed them at gunpoint. This man pointed a gun at the bf and told him to beat it and leave the girl. The bf refused and fought the man barehanded to protect her. He got shot in the arm cause of it, but he managed to survive and protect her. He loved her enough to take a chance. He didn't let the fear of a gun stop him. That`s just an example of love being stronger then fear.

Fear does last longer than love especially in that business and on the streets. People can love you and then all of a sudden you do something or say something or make a couple of moves and then they decide they don't love you so much all of a sudden. Look at romantic relationships or friendships how quickly love can turn into despising someone. But fear of someone doesn't dissolve that quickly if ever.

Fear is a basic emotion, and love is not. Those who have strength should love, and those who are weak should be afraid. Fear controls more people because more people are mentally weak, but Love instills values that outlast any basic feeling. In reality, it's impossible to choose one without the other and still rule.

  • @marcopl17

Fear is hardwired into us via our primitive brain. Its a survival.mechanism, part of our flight or fight response. We're social animals too, however, its through this first primitive love that we learn to care for each other. Grooming, nesting, feeding and partnering all stem from love. It too is a survival mechanism. Fear is stronger because its about self protection, whereas love is about self actualization. Love only blossoms when basic safety is achieved therefore fear must be minimized for love to take root but they are both primal and last equally as long. The difference in how we experience them is the purview of our higher brain. Most people understand that they can without love to reduce their vulnerability. That's easy. What they fail to understand is that they can choose not to be fearful as well. This is called strength of character.

They aren't 2 opposing forces, love is actually the understanding of fear.

@Jane Shepard here is the paradox: Sonny wants to be feared because he walks in fear himself. Why do you think that it was hard for him to trust anyone around him? He really didn't fully trust the men under him. That's why he gave them enough but not too much. Again tyrants rule by fear because they live in fear themselves.

I like how when C was young and went to meet sonny, he asked C if he was afraid of him and he was pleased to hear he wasn't. it's almost as if he looked at C completely different, and had no need to make c fear him. because he didnt fear and love sonny, he loved and respected sonny. Probably a prime reason sonny would have absolutely refused to officially bring C into his family. he seriously wanted a good life for him.

You're forgetting one vital point he made. Not to be hated. Good parents instill fear in their kids, but not so much that they're hated. Parents who instill no fear in their kids are walked all over. Parents who instill too much fear end up in a retirement home forgotten about when they're old or sometimes even killed by their own children. Fear is absolutely necessary for respect and authority. The challenge is finding the right balance

So is it better to be feared or loved. The obvious answer is loved. Now yes when they fear you they think twice before crossing a boundary but when they love you that lets you know they have no intentions of ever crossing you in the first place because they know it's wrong and they don't want that done to them. But another reason it is better to be loved than feared is because when you're loved the moment you are seen vulnerable they will not take advantage of your vulnerability , you become weak and dependent they love you they help you back to strength if they fear you when they see you weak they no longer have to be afraid of you and now they will leave you.
