A BRIT In Armenia; Talking To The Locals 🇦🇲 🇬🇧

Who Speaks English in Armenia?
Join me as we walk the streets of Yerevan, in search of locals that speak English.
We pick a destination and ask the locals for directions to see how well they could respond.
After Georgia, I was really surprised with the results.
We head to vernisage and as always mingle with the locals in the amazing city of Yerevan.
If you enjoy adventure videos from the former Soviet Union and Central & Eastern Europe, then grab your vodka, some zakusky and join me as we meet the amazing people of Yerevan Armenia
Thank you to all my Patreons for your support and helping make this channel what it is!

Monte Melkonian is an Armenian hero 😊 Such an inspiration. There has never been anyone like him. He fought and died for Hayastan. He was American of Armenian descent and was not able to speak Armenian until he was an adult, where he then learnt the language. He fought for all Armenians including those in Lebanon 🇱🇧 where he also fought in. Sadly he died at the battlefield when he tried to liberate Armenian land from the Azeri Turkic occupiers.

This doesn't surprise me. Despite having been told by so many people that English is very prevalent in Georgia and that you shouldn't speak Russian, I have had pretty bad experiences in Tbilisi trying to communicate in English (and I've been there several times). First of all, I can't even count the number of times people have just stared at me like some sort of alien creature when just saying "Hello" or something simple, even in Georgian... I don't know if it's that they thought I was Russian or something, but I genuinely felt like I had landed on a planet in another solar system and the people I was interacting with had never seen a being like myself. And English speakers were relatively rare. I had to speak Russian in order to communicate much more often than I was expecting. Granted it wasn't everyone, and I have lots of Georgian friends that are super warm and friendly, but I've never experienced anything like that in Armenia. Even if an Armenian doesn't speak your language, they are almost universally friendly and helpful... and the level of English seems to be higher in Yerevan, to boot.

Another excellent video Justin! I hope you are recovering and feeling better in Latvia. I really enjoyed your KZread live video from earlier this week. Just to let you know, there will be the Armenian Pan-Armenian games taking place in Yerevan this August. Tens of thousands of Armenians from all over the world will be coming to Armenia for these Olympic-style games. You'll get a chance to meet Armenians from Europe, South America, United States, Canada and the Middle East. In case you were thinking of visiting again! I know there are flights from Riga few times a week! Cheers!

The guy from Syria is Armenian too (hence the first name, Harut.. but also I can tell from his face). Before the civil war, Syria had one of the largest Armenian diasporas in the world, mostly established by Armenian Genocide survivors. Syrian Arabs welcomed them to their country, and helped save countless women and children after the genocide. Those Armenians kept their language, culture, church and identity, as Armenians have been doing in foreign lands for millennia, but sadly many had to flee to Armenia during the war. Same goes for Lebanon - there are lots of Lebanese Armenians in Yerevan. They're easily identifiable as they don't speak Russian, but usually speak English fairly well with a mixed Arab-Armenian accent.

The older generation was growing up in the soviet occupation era that’s why most of them speak Russian But most Armenian youth speak English. Overall if you can speak only English and you want to be understood, you have nothing to worry. You’re always welcome in our country 🇦🇲
