    I recommend an aluminum baseball bat with a 6" blade mounted on the top of the bat you can use it as a cudgel and a spear (for thrusting not trowing). It would give you reach and be of use for much longer aside from the gas there's mechanic maintenance that would it far less viable for the long run.

    NICE idea - if you want to know how far the parts fly, after disassemble itself - at 5000 (more?) revolutions / per minute. There is a steel disc with solid blades, useful for things harder than grass. You need the same safety equipment as for chainsaws. The idea is good, use headed bolts and nylon rope / zip ties?

    I miss lawn darts. The cool part of the lawn dart design was to have lessons learned and it also thinned out the population. You live you learn as it rid the world of people who are suffering from a weak or dumb gene pool. What was really great about the 60's and 70's, was that when the dumb kids in the neighborhood didn't learn to respect the monkey bars, teeter tatters, and shit like lawn darts, the kids with the ability to critically think, used their failings to live long productive and a fun life. Today our society can't do much due to safety laws and people who look to take away the right for everyone to live. Damn I miss the good old days.

    This project is the examination of the same principle as flinging metal away from the center point, utilizing centrifugal force as seen in the simple machine known as the wheel and axle. However, the outcome may result in the same final action as from the explosive outward force as seen in a hand grenade, not the wheel and axle. The action being shrapnel entering into soft tissue after this project demonstrates the crossing of the Rubicon into final failure mode.

    Perhaps, soldering the chain to the nut, bolt, and the disk, would help not to come loose that easy. Also, you need to keep it clean, lubricated, and not exposed to the weather. So it would not get rusted, and break more easily. Well, giving it a second thought, this whole thing is not that safe. Perhaps, that's why they never have sold, anything like it to the public. I recall the day the boss handed us something similar to this. More over-engineered though, with big chain links like you'd find on a decent bike lock. Invented by an Italian farmer the paperwork said. Well we fitted it to the machines & away we went. Fucking incredible I can tell you. Smashes through brambles & even small trees with ease! Then one of the links breaks off & flies out so fast you can't even see it, just like a bullet.... At that point the whole head becomes imbalanced (we had four chains on ours). So you take a bolt cropper out of the van & cut the other three chains to the correct size, & away you go again. It was like playing russian roulette. The safe working distance is usually something like 5-10 metres with a regular strimmer. It went up to about 50m using that chain thing.

    The chains are much heavier and consequently, make the equipment less effective than it was in its original format. This will result from the decrease in the number of rotations per minute. In addition to this, the fuel consumption will increase because due to the increase in weight caused by the chains, you now need more fuel to get the same amount of work out of the tool.

  • @johnfromnj885

    @johnfromnj885

    Not only that, because they are heavier they will significantly reduce the life of the equipment. Manufacturers of commercial equipment will not warrantee string trimmers if the string guard is removed, which many landscapers do. The reason is the guard has a cutter in it that keeps the string at a pre determined length. Longer string is heavier and causes premature wear. The longer string slows down the weed wacker, wears the clutch, and can snap shafts inside the stem. In other words, beats the shit out of the equipment.

    My wife's cousin recently injured himself damn near fatally when a welded-on attachment (didn't get much details on the shape or size) to a gas-powered weed-eater blade came off at speed and hit him on the inside-top of the calf muscle, and severed an artery. He was out in the field, hit the ground and was trying to yell for help but was several hundred yards from his house. Somehow, someone heard or saw him and they went and got him from the field. The whole village chipped in and donated blood as he'd lost so much he was almost out of the survivable zone. A 2 week hospital stay recovering from the emergency 'surgery' they do here, (this is Thailand) plus the transfusions, and now several weeks still of limited motion and sensation. And, BTW, yes, he knows how to weld, done it for years. Welding ANYTHING to a blade which revolves at SUCH a high rate of speed is extremely dangerous. Stress and fatigue cracks from spinning and flexing, (especially if the rotating piece is out of balance by even the most MINUTE amount) can appear and grow in metals, and there's no real way to tell when or how they'll fail. After a while, one strike at a rock or almost-totally submerged pipe, etc. could easily be enough to knock off an attachment, especially if it's NOT the first strike. Personally, I think you should remove this vid. There have been many others advocating using chain and steel cable (from motorcycle brakes, etc.) as cutting lines, but this is probably the worst I've seen.. You are doing a genuine disservice to viewers AND THEIR PEOPLE, (since family goes through a traumatic event WITH their loved one). You are encouraging them (you know you are) , with COMPLETE DISREGARD for their varying mechanical-fabrication skill levels, all the variables of the different materials which may be pressed into use, and natural factors like terrain and handling experience, to ignore safety concerns, and attempt a (poorly engineered) modification to a piece of steel which, when used, will spin EXTREMELY fast, and create a very REAL and possibly lethal safety hazard, all for views, ego and $$. Sad.

    I’ll keep my grass long and my feet attached I think! Just saving up my money to buy a replacement flexible blade as they are around £1.50 for a pack of 5!

    I made an attachment for my grandmothers weed wacker 35 years ago out of an old bicycle chain,,, got tired of having to constantly replace the twine in it from the heavy brush she wanted cut down… thankfully, grandpa was a blacksmith and taught me how to make a lot of tools… with a little ingenuity and about 30 minutes in the machine shed, I had a nice gas powered brushhogger out of that old weed wacker…. Don’t get your legs anywhere near it while it’s running though… you won’t have a foot!

    Please DON'T do this! This same idea became popular back in the 1980s. A link broke off and went through a child's head, instantly killing her. And there were many others with injuries from this "idea."

    It would be the bolt securing the chain that would fail after hitting a rock.

    My weed whacker came with an optional brush blade. 1 piece blade similar to lawn mower blade in looks. Could cut down 2-3" trees plus the weeds. Left it on all the time.
