@@manifestations7758 I never said that it did, and I don't think anyone sensible believes that, but I'm sorry you misunderstood. I only brought this up because there is no denying that rainbows are a major symbol of the LGBTQ+, so I just thought that a doll line with a rainbow motif would be a great opportunity to introduce more queer fashion dolls. Again, I'm sorry for the misunderstanding, and I hope this clears things up! :D

i like to think that we got confirmation about neighthan rot being gay in the MH "gaga for ghouls" music video! though he's not even part of the main boo crew, draculaura helped him up from a dark corner and suddenly he turned even more rainbow and glittery when he stood up. like come on, he's already a rainbow unicorn and had a transformation in a video referencing lady gaga! that was definitely a gay moment 🏳‍🌈

I'm not part of the LGBTQ community and I hope what I'm about to say isn't considered offensive because I don't mean it that way. But when I read your comment I wasn't happy. Not because you want him to be gay but because you have to take something not explicitly stated as confirmation of him being gay. When I read your comment I thought about how I would feel if I had to look for confirmation that a doll was considered a woman or considered black and that thought hurt. You shouldn't have to search for confirmation, it should just be confirmed. I hate the argument that dolls are for kids and that's why we don't have gay or lesbuan dolls because that makes no sense to me. Kids understand better than adults that everyone deserves respect and representation.

I just don't understand why it's so hard for doll companies to just make a doll that is explicitly stated to belong to the LGBTQ community. I didn't like how JK Rowling waited until after the books were written to say that Dumbledore was gay. Why couldn't she just write that explicitly in the text so that no one had to wonder? I wonder if something could be said for the barbie movies with serious sapphic energies. I'd consider Diamond Castle, Starlight Adventure, and Big City Big Dreams to be the gayest barbie movies. Big City Big Dreams especially had some intentional or not implications with the dual barbies but also some serious coding with the character of Rafa, who is basically a gay stereotype who says 'fabulous' and legit says that the only label he cares about is designer. i also love Rafa

I want to comment about the LOL Cool Lev doll. He actually is a trans male doll. This is shown by the tran flag colors, the fact his pronouns are on the jacket & a more clear tell is the fact that when stripped he is in underwear instead of being 'anatomically' correct like the other bois. My spouse actually found an article about this, sadly they don't remember where they saw it now. My spouse wanted me to tell you thank you. The way that whole kiss was handled was really odd. Darling and Apple were barely friends and Apple woke up thinking Daring kissed her. Clearly the two weren't in love (at least... not yet). The universe just decided this was their destinies. Its long since been established the EAH characters get stuck in arranged marriages with people they don't feel romantic love for. So this relationship feels a lot like "I'm kissing her because its my job." All well at least they actually kissed. Unlike Korrasami.

on Monster High: I've also seen a very prevalent headcanon that Deuce Gorgon is trans! this stems from the fact that gorgons as a species have male counterparts, but the male counterparts do NOT have snakes for hair. Deuce does have snakes for hair, leading many fans to believe he was AFAB

its funny and sad how these companies will hide behind excuses like "it's not the right time" or "these characters are already established" when bratz proved they can do literally whatever they want. Hopefully other companies see that and understand that the comfort of bigots is less important than the hopeful feeling a child gets seeing a doll that represents them.

But I'd like to mention the fashion dolls made for magical girl shows, specifically precure! So many of them are canonically gay and have such lovely dolls.

When I was a kid I loved monster high dolls but I didn’t keep up with the actual stories or canon. My kid self decided that Rochelle and Abby were a couple so to this day I still think of the dolls as being gay even if it doesn’t necessarily make any sense for the actual characters.

I loved the Mattel Creatable World dolls the moment I saw them advertised online and I started collecting them once they hit brick-and-mortar retail [ i.e.: Target ] which was shortly before Covid swept the country and the planet and the world effectively went into lock down. Once restrictions began to lift a few months later I went back to buy more of the dolls and their accessories only to find they had lapsed into clearance status which was bittersweet as they were gong away and yet were deeply discounted as well. I do wonder if they ever caught on with actual children as was Mattel's intended goal or if simply they were loved and collected by adult collectors such as ourselves.

Happy Pride Month! I'd like to add another two gay characters from Integrity Toys. In 2018 they released Laird Drake, a guy from 1950s (as wel as the rest of the characters in East 59th series). There was a line in his story that explicitly said he's into men. Unfortunately it was the only release of that character BUT in 2021 Integrity Toys released Augustus "Gus" Blake, the second male doll in this line. Now allow me to cite the official description from the website: "Swayed by his perfectly polished demeanor, Laird fell hard for Gus and things grew quickly. Not only did the pair become fast friends and passionate lovers, but they would also eventually co-found the East 59th Agency, and the rest, as they say, is history!" Since Gus has been released twice already I hope there will be some kind of couple set in the future! And I think it's also worth mentioning that Mattel has released some dolls that (despite not being referred to as LGBT) shift binary gender presentation. BMR1959 Ken doll with neon green hair and makeup it the first who comes into mind (I know that any person can wear makeup and nails but it's first male doll with these in Mattel lineup). There's also a Barbie Fashionista 128 who has pretty much gender neutral look and also new body type. It's not explicitly said what identity this doll may represent but it's defitinitely open to interpretations! (Sorry for mistakes, English is not my first language)

I’m a little hit or miss on the whole “story” aspect of dolls. There’s certainly nothing wrong with having diverse characters in every shape and form, especially in children’s media, since exposing kids to that kind of stuff only makes for better, more caring people, that’s just not the way I played as a kid. I wasn’t into Barbies, I was more a dollhouse kinda girl, but our dolls often had names and identities too, if not as fleshed out. All sorts of toys came with names and histories, including my toy horses. Grand Champions for the win! But I could not have cared less about any of that. I threw all of that out the window to create my own characters and stories, which is the essence of imaginative play, at least in my mind.

Wanted to shout out one doll I am aware of (because I love her), which is Pullip Assa from 2005. She comes in a mechanics jumpsuit decorated in little 'patches' and pins and a very rainbow sweatband headband with a pin that explicitly says 'Queer' (she also comes with a metal toolset which is very cute.). Now, it's hard to say if the company explicitly intended for Assa to be a gay doll as the company that made her, Jun Planning, was Japanese, and it the patches came across as random 'American' things (her other pin is a star with the American Flag in it), or representative of American youth culture in a way they saw it - her 'theme' in the marketing is about music. But a rainbow headband that has a button which says 'queer' tells me, she was probably meant to be a lesbian doll. I have the stock outfit on a different Pullip so my personal headcannon for her is that she is and has a crush on one of the other Pullips I have.

Also don't forget She-Ra was created as an action + fashion doll in 1984, and thanks to the reboot by DreamWorks and Netflix, she is now considered to be canonically lesbian, similar to the retroactive canonization for Kimber and Stormer. That reboot was outstanding in that many of the characters were reimagined as queer, even some of those in a straight relationship.

Uh... about that... The idea of She-Ra (and some of the other characters, such as Catra, Spinerella, and Netossa) being a lesbian is actually part of the DreamWorks series canon, not the original series canon according to series creator, Noelle Stevenson. If there is something I'm missing, let me know.

I would like to add another character to the Integrity list! Although it was never confirmed by IT the Fashion Royalty character Luchia Z. was constantly very vague in her storycards, but many collectors considered her being a trans woman, even if IT never confirmed nor denied it she went through a headsculpt change that added more androgynous and even masculine lines to her face, many fans considered that as being IT embracing the theories. I love both Luchia’s headscupts and consider her the first but unofficial IT trans character. Btw I found your channel a couple months ago and I basically ate up every video ever since, I love the way you research and the themes you choose, and your voice is very relaxing as well ☺️ congratulations!
