A Brief History of Fairies and Fae Folk from Around the World: in Honor of International Fairy Day

The history of fairies and fae folk is incredibly long and can be traced back to multiple different origin points around the world. The fairy or fae developed independently in a number of cultures including Slavic, English, Persian, French, German and Celtic, and what a fairy was and what it was called in each of these cultures was different! The word fairy, comes from the Latin word Fata which means fate. Fairies were also associated with “enchantment,” because supernatural beings - who could “enchant” - were thought to influence and even control one’s fate in life. Fata as alluding to enchantment referenced the land where the supernatural fairies lived as well as the creatures themselves.
Want to know about the Peri of Persia, the Nymphs of Greece, the Sidhe of Ireland and the Disir of Scandinavia? This video explores many different examples of fairies and fae from around the world, and the development of the fairy tale from Aesop's Fables to Grimms Fairytales. Fairies helped explain the seemingly unexplainable such as where something or someone went when they disappeared, why people “sensed” an event before it happened, and good or bad luck which seemed undeserved.

I'm big enough fan of fairies in several story types but it's Tuatha De Dannan I wish TV would introduce more facts of especially if TV allowed Princess Merida to do it. I'd also appreciate it if something or someone introduced a bit more the old Basque stories. I'm kind of searching for what I haven't been told.

Fun Fact: In Hawaiian culture, we can equate a fairy/faerie to what we would call Menehune.

24th June is Saint John's night in Spain. People light up bonefires to repel bad luck and they say that people must not go to the mountains, as fairies can kidnap them, but also of you're brave enough, they might gift you with their golden comb or even marry you

Faerie, or sidhe, were considered to be spirits or angels that got trapped between worlds. As they weren't evil enough to go to hell. However, the stories of Fae did not grow independently. All these peoples were once ONE Indo European people that migrated throughout the world at the end of the ice age. As of over 4000 years ago, we have images of angels and fairies with every Indo European people.

Interesting. I find fairy stories amusing. Fairy tales from the Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Anderson and more. I love fairies and magic. I never gave up believing in them with all my heart. Most of my life, I longed to go into the places where magical things happen, but it only happens when you are young at heart no matter how old you are. I took it after my hero, Walt Disney, who believed in everything until his death in 1966. Like him, my one and only wish is to keep the magic alive forever and ever, even on my birthdays and Christmas. Never give up believing because I do not want to grow up and forget about them. Fairies, pixies, sprites, and fae folks are strong, young and beautiful for eternity.

If I went further than the common stuff I'd enjoy exploring and learning more about the unusual Latin stories. Encanto that film excited me. Huaca, Akeki those fairies types interest me. It would be cool to hear explanation of the Kachina stuff. Encantado sounds like a funny fairy. A nimerigar hero story would be intersting. A malandro tale would be fun too. I love the magical horses which includes the Hippocampus. The Laminak they're one of the types I've seen the description of but haven't found a tale of yet. Fairy tales, Princesses or history Elena is my top favorite.

Well what is the connection with the modern day fantasy Elves and traditional fairies? The question is how the pointed ears was considered as typical Elvish trait? Some people say that painters of Victorian era depicted fairies with such an ears. But I may not say that functionnaly fantasy Elves (first and foremost in Tolkien's setting) equals the elves from fairy tales.

Dwarves are essentially the subterranean elves. Trolls are usually monstrous, similar to English giants. Dwarves seen in fantasy now are derived allmost entirely from Tolkein's portrayal.

I would add that the fairies are decedents of the Nephilim, who mostly perished from the great flood. That would make them a divergent race of people separate from the decedents of Adam-two races living here on earth. Both races, Adamic and Angelic, originally bred with the daughters of the first men and women, who were created during the original days of Creation. One more thing, Adam’s children have souls made eternal by being bonded in spirit with God, while the children of the Angels, the Nephilim, only have souls which are made eternal by their connection to their angelic progenitors. This is important because you must have an eternal spirit to enter the spiritual realm. Souls made eternal have no where to go. They are stuck here, with nowhere to go and no way to interact with the material world. With your education you must have wondered why some fairies asked, “Can we be saved?” to those whom they were interacting with. Of course, there is no way of proving or disproving my understanding of these matters. I just thought that considering the fairies as a divergent race something that would be wise to consider.
