I received my undergraduate degree in Colorado, and I am currently pursuing my PhD in geology. Your video is very accurate in terms of all accounts of the geologic history of the region. Colorado is the most exceptional area in the United States for learning geology, and I make sure to come back every year to visit all of the fascinating locations available to the geoscientist.

I live in a small town surrounded by giant mountains in co and I swear some days when everything is going wrong... I just look at them, breath deep and everything feel right again. They are so unbelievably beautiful it feels like taking a drug, it's a really comfortable protected feeling.

I have lived here my whole life and so has my family dating back 5 generations. I got really emotional during this documentary and I am so happy you did such a stellar job in making it, the respect and care you put into this production is without flaw. I had no idea about 99% of what was told in this program and it really showed me how I cant take for granted the epic history lying under my feet that supports my life and the lives of everything I love. thank you so so much.

❗🤔❗ Well, let me offer up a more realistic, "alternate" timeline: Approx 6,000 years ago, on a Wednesday, God wished the Earth into existence. That next Saturday, he took a rib from Adam and created Eve. For the first few hundred years, it was just Adam, Eve, and dinosaurs roaming the land. Then God got angry, and all the dinosaurs died during the great flood. But Noah saved ALL of the hundreds of thousands of other living creatures on his ark. 👉 Then, when there was but 1 giant continent called "Pangaea", Jesus and the Israelites moved from Israel to Utah. They walked because buses hadn't been invented yet. Then Columbus discovered America(again... Jesus had already been here, remember)! Joseph Smith later learned about Jesus already having lived in America, when the angels showed him the golden plates, which he used to write the book of Mormon. Oh, I forgot to talk about all that geological stuff. Well, it was all created during the 40 days and 40 nights of flooding created by God's angry wrath, when Noah saved all the animals but decided not to save ANY dinosaurs(because he was worried they'd eat all the other animals on the ark). Doesn't that seem like a more more logical explanation? Any questions? 😁

Sure, just go to Shell or Chevron. Their executives would love to your shake your hand. It would give them another opportunity to tell you how awesome oil in in Colorado, the jobs it brings, blah blah blah. I didn’t once hear oil portrayed negatively

This the finest geographic history of Colorado ever !!! I’ve vacationed and explored Colorado for nearly 50 yrs. I’ve been to nearly every National Park. As a Kansan this my get away state for recreation; skiing, hiking and just plain sight seeing. Oh and I want to thank Colorado for all the dirt provided.

I’m trying to plan a trip so see national parks. I am based in Colorado and will be traveling by car. Which national parks were your favorite? We recently got back from moab and dead horse national park and it was all breathtaking. I had never seen desert like that before.

Can’t believe it took me so long to find this video. I moved to Boulder from Chicago, and lived there for 4 years. To this day wish I had never left! Great video. Also kudos on the timeline box in the lower right. Plus, you used Christopher Scotese’s incredible animations of plate tectonics. Again, very well done!

This is amazing. It really illustrates how dynamic the Earth's surface is. I bet the vast majority of people had no idea that the land of Colorado was once south of the equator. I didn't know that the area was mostly flat "only" 18 million years ago. I had always assumed that the mountains were revealed and generally shaped 60 million years ago when the rock formed and uplifted. Colorado's climate started warming 20,000 years ago at the peak of the most recent glacial period. I enjoy hiking and climbing all around the state. I'm always looking at the rock and amazing geomorphology of the landscape.

I can only imagine the amount of work that went into making this all come together. brilliant. I agree with Gondwana " This video sets a new standard for any self-respecting institution when it comes to describing the geological history of any region they wish to study."

I have no words to describe this breath-taking, stuningly beautiful video. From the tectonic history of the area to the level of detail in the graphics and the voice over. This video sets a new standard for any self-respecting institution when it comes to describing the geological history of any region they wish to study. This must be the first time I get genuinely emotional watching this kind of documentary. not too late to "unlearn" lies

When I took college geology in 1964 they were still working on plate tectonics, in fact I wrote a short paper on isostaic disequilibrium, the early interpretation. Amazing they can figure out the details examined here.

This is wonderful.....the animated map of the changing continents and water. Priceless. So grateful to all involved.

Well that explains all the sea creatures fossils we find in the mountains or the Rockies, all I can say is I love👍 Colorado

@@raydavis108 There are sea fossils on mountaintops not because flood waters were so deep as to cover the mountains, but because the mountains were not mountains yet; they were sea floor.

This is quite literally 1/3 KZread videos I watch over and over again.

Being a colorado Native, I knew part of it had once been submerged by an inland sea, but that it was an island, an equatorial rainforest, deserts, sea floor, had glaciers and been underwater almost as long as it's been above water, that's amazing! Just to hear the phrase "Colorado's East Coast" is mind boggling... I wonder what other places have had so many different geological ups and downs and have turned out so beautiful for us to witness today.

You believe the Hubble telescope is where you are told it is and it sees what you are told it sees. I do not know one way or the other what is true and what is not yet you are totally confident everything they tell you is 100% true. On various parts of earth you cannot use a cell phone for communications yet you believe Billions of miles into space Hubble can send back signals we can pick up crystal clearly. And you say those who believe the bible are gullible. Maybe they are but you are even more gullible for believing the photo of earth from voyager1 taken how many millions of miles from earth yet it never took a picture of earth any closer. And what did it show? 1 pixel on a huge background with an arrow saying " We are here". And you believe such rubbish.

I live in Mexico right now I’ve always wanted to move to move to Colorado it’s so pretty 🥺

My goodness, I am 63 years old, and when i was, oh maybe 22 or 23 i lived in Leadville and worked at Climax Mine. WoW From what i have seen on the pictures of the town, Man has it changed. After the mine i worked at Taber restaurant washing dishes. I don`t know if the Side Door is still there, i worked there as well. Had some really good times in that town. some or i should say most i will always remember,,,,,,,,

Grew up in Basalt ( AKA Ute Junction As to Aspen was first known as Ute city ) Gramps was one of Colorados' first wild life officers , Showed me many places, From east to west & North and south... Been to all of these places and all are even more awsome in person ! I still have places I would like to go here in Colorado !

I since have move to southern Colorado.. wouldn't live any other place ... too many people have taken over that valley ... I was very fortunate growing up there , Give my reguards to the Hot Springs... Our Mom MADE us kids take swim lessons there , Because she was deathly afraid of the water , and she did not know how to swim... 50 years later .... still swimming ... and going to ) other ... smaller ... more relaxed ..hot springs ... Swim on Sage :)

Incredibly beautiful portrayal of Colorado's geologic history.

As a third generation native this had me hanging on every word. It is now saved and will be shared with family right after this comment. Love Colorado history and learned a lot from this. My father would have loved this! My grandfather, his dad, was a surveyer in the state for the National Geological Society. I remember backpacking in and camping on Gore Creek without seeing anyone outside our party for a full week. The one drawback to the beauty, everyone who sees it wants to stay. Can't blame them though. I live on the front range again but also spent many years on the eastern plains. I would have liked to seen more about that also.

I often re-watch this video and see something new every time. This is the best geology video!

Wonderful visualization of geological processes and their embedding into the plate tectonics. Really shows how mountain ranges that to us human observers seem eternal in fact are built up and eroded away when given enough time. Thanks from Germany for this video.

Hard to imagine a place with the current average height of 6,800 feet as being a vast inland waterway - but I guess the rocks and fossil's don't lie. AMAZING geological detective work and the absolute best chronological geographical representation of Colorado's history as has ever been presented ! Sure,, fossils don't lie...............................................but..... PEOPLE DO~!~ BETTER THAN 90% OF THIS PRESENTATION IS ABSOLUTE SPECULATION!!! FACT!!! Continental drift is only a theory, and has much to be desired, as far as factual "land-movement" is concerned! In order for any land mass movement, such as a continent, it would have to divorce itself from it's roots/base, which goes down below the surface hundreds/thousands of miles. In order for huge land masses to move, they would have to have an open pathway for that movement. Any other land mass(es) would have to move at the very same time in order to allow this movement. And, the diameter of the earth would be also altering, which hasn't happened. An example of this is made by taking an ordinary balloon and filling it with only half it's normal volume of air, and then drawing the continents with a magic marker all around the balloon. If you want the continents to "move", you would have to blow the balloon up fully, which represents the changing of the diameter of the earth, and of course, earths diameter is constant, therefore ""drifting"" of continents is not possible! Another example is taking an orange, which represents earth, and separating all the segments, which represents the earths matter/crust, and putting them together as a sphere again. Try to move a segment around to a different position,,,, you can't! Because just like the orange segment, the land masses are not islands, or, a raft,, that can drift only because it's not solidly founded. As I said, the drifting theory, is just that, a theory!!!

This is a spectacular presentation. Now I have a much clearer understanding of the geology of Colorado.

Excellent graphics and clear explanation of amazing geo-history, thanks, I learned something today

0.24: "Profits will be down this year due to dinosaurs eating the entire cannabis crop" But on a serious note, this makes me want to visit Colorado and see all these fascinating places for myself. And other KZreadrs please note: THIS is the right music-to-narration audio level!

In undergrad I flirted with a geology major before focusing on computer science and statistics. This really takes me back. Very well written and narrated, and (as far as my limited earth sciences education can confirm) appears to be very well-researched. Would love to see a series like this on all 50 US states.

You can find great Paleozoic fossils in Ordovician Manitou Formation. I found some really good dolomitized brachiopods, cystoids, and trilobites in a quarry between Deckers and Woodland Park, CO.

Thank you so much for posting this fantastic video. I have students study our rocks and fossils, trying to piece together the history of the state. Now they can really visualize it by watching this video! Really well done, love when you show the actual rocks that tell us what was happening during certain time periods. I wish it went back even further, to Precambrian times! There is, however, way too much about the oil and coal deposits, but it was made for the AAPG so I guess that is to be expected (Amer. Assoc. of Petroleum Geologists!)

All these ancient discoveries we are starting to put together just blows me away. I watch people hike the CDT that runs through Colorado and you see all the features in this documentary up close and now with an explanation that makes sense. The mountains are crumbling but they have been doing this for millions of years.

@@technusking Suspicious? Hydrocarbon deposits throughout the geologic history of CO is cool to talk about and extremely relevant. They mentioned mining as well which I didn't find "suspicious". Oil wasn't even the main focus of the video at all. I thought they cast a wide net and did a great job people who studied Geology (like myself) or just have a passing interest in it. I'm confused that this is what you took away considering how great this video is?

This was one of the best videos I've seen on KZread in a while. Great education about the State I live in. I loved it.

An absolute awesome presentation and the best I have ever seen. The time and hours of study to put this much knowledge together must be tremendous. I love the way the video shows Colorado as it relates to the land as it moved. I never knew it was below the equator for so long. Then as the presentation moves through time, it shows great examples of what a particular past time period created. It's just a fantastic way to help understand how our planet has evolved over many many years. The geologist that understand all of this are amazing, and it's so fascinating. I would love to see other states produce this type of video as well. Congratulations on an excellent presentation and thanks for sharing it!

Live next door in Utah. We have some really nice mountains but just cant compare to Colorado's. It seems every canyon has a beautiful stream and green meadows. Such a beautiful state!

Starting BEFORE pangea, this geological history of Colorado fascinates with great maps, excellent research and consistent attention to detail by knowledgeable scientist/geologists.
