A Bridge Too Far for this SuperYacht!

#superyacht #superyachts #yachts #boats
SY News
Heesen Yachts’ largest yacht to date, the 80-metre Galactica, is on its way to Harlingen for completion and sea trials. Yet, after first not being able to pass under a bridge near Den Bosch due to high water levels, it subsequently faced the same problem near Heusden. Late last night, the yacht finally managed to pass, a feat Heesen calls ‘business as usual’.
The 80-metre all-aluminium Project Cosmos, now known as MY Galactica, began its maiden voyage on Saturday, 8 January by passing through the tight lock in Macharen. With only 15 cm of clearance on each side, Heesen had to wait for a calm day with no wind.

    With so many small inland waters here, Dutch tug captains are really specialists We also slide finished newly build ships sideways in our narrow waterways. With so many yachtbuilders here most are close to sea, but some of them are still in places that in the old days were good enough for the size ships they used to build. All ship builders here ( and we have many ) are forced to build bigger ships lately.

  • @skiingfast1

    @skiingfast1

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yachts are either Glass Reinforced Plastic aka fiberglass aka plastic, or metal. Aluminum is a lot lighter than steel so saves on fuel costs and is becoming semi common for yachts. The plastic yachts are made by being pressed into expensive forms, so to differ the cost of the forming molds the builders build many of that design, and they are smaller so more people can afford them.

    @@skiingfast1 The added flex of larger hulls on fiberglass hulls also causes a lot of damage to the hull, so there is an upper limit to the size of composite hulls. They do NOT use aluminum for hulls, they use Aluminum alloy. Pure aluminum is way to weak to hold it's shape without being alloyed with a stiffer metal. Any company saying they build boats with aluminum should be sued for false advertising. ;)
