A Brick Ranch Makeover

We have been wanting to capture a cottage-feel for our tiny brick ranch home. We finally decided that one of the ways we could warm up the exterior of our house was by lime washing the brick. We were so nervous to do this as we truly love natural brick; however, we are so glad we did! The Romabio Lime Wash in Avorio looks wonderful on our house! It certainly evokes more of a cottage vibe and we couldn't love it more!

    50% dilution means 1 part product and 1/2 part water. Your 1:1 ratio was actually 100% dilution. Quite a bit thinner.

    Hey! I'm about to use this product on my brick home. It's much lighter orange-ish brick than the dark red of yours. I know you mentioned that it's more Opaque when it's dry but I was wondering if it makes a significant difference? I am wanting complete white as if I were actually using paint. The lime wash is a much better choice but I'm curious if I will get the results I want with only one coat? Its a little hard to tell through a video. Your house looks great by the way! 😊

    Thank you! It’s hard to say since our bricks are different, but I’m betting it will mostly look white except after a rain… then it will look a little more translucent. Also, a year later, the places that would hold water have worn off… think windowsills, doorways, etc. It still looks really great, but those small areas would need to be redone yearly, probably, if you want it to remain white all the time. I actually really like the look of it because it feels very cottage-y to me. 😍

    In PPG store they told me that I have to put something like a primer first. What about weather resistance? Did you guys check it already?

  • @thegoodenoughhomestead8239

    @thegoodenoughhomestead8239

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi! We followed the instructions on their website which were just to wet down the brick first, no primer needed! But it IS crucial to wet the brick. It takes about 3 to 4 hours to dry and is good to go after that! This is our first year with it so I haven’t gone through winter, but we are in Indiana and just had about 26 days of rain straight, and it still looks like the day we applied! It has also gone through hail and a ton of wind with no problems. Here are some things I found in my research: -It will last about 5 to 7 plus years and then may need to be reapplied. However, if you like that look of aged, lime washed brick, then you can just leave it. -It was actually developed to help protect the brick from aging so should stand up to elements well -It can leave some white on your clothes if you brush against it while it’s dry -It is a natural substance and environmentally friendly. It also allows your brick to breathe, unlike paint. -At least in the case of the Romabio brand of lime wash, you supposedly can remove it within the first three days with a pressure washer/scrubber if you don’t like it. After that, the calcification would make it much harder to remove. -You cannot lime wash over painted brick Hope this helps! We are really loving it so far!

    Great informative video. We have very similar houses and this video has almost clinched my decision whether to Limewash or Paint. One question though. How does the finish look after it rains? Specifically, does it remain Opake or does it temporary become Translucent? We Limewashed some interior walls with Powdered Lime. It looks great, but if we wipe it with water, it stays on super well, but immediately becomes very Translucent. I am wondering if it is because ours was mixed thinner. Or if your product has a substance in it that stabilizes the appearance?

    Hi! It does look a little pink in rain, but then goes right back to white when it dries. It’s not enough to bother me- I would still definitely recommend it. I could try to spray it on a video and post it so you can see if you’d like!

    @@thegoodenoughhomestead8239 I think my mix had more water in it, because when it gets wet it, it returns to 90% original red brick. I still think I am going to try the Romabio. I can live with a little pink showing through. I might experiment with putting a sealer over the top afterwards.

  • @thegoodenoughhomestead8239

    @thegoodenoughhomestead8239

    @@martingarris6015 wow! Yeah, it definitely doesn’t change that much for us. It just turns a pale pink. We did about a 50-50 mixture water and lime wash mix from Romabio. I know you can lime wash over previously lime washed brick, so I think it might be good to try again! I don’t know about the sealer though… I think one of the best things about lime wash is it allows the brick to breathe so that you don’t get cracks and other problems associated with brick, so you might try to research that first just in case!

    In my limited experience, I would say no. The area that we walk on daily has rubbed off at this point. However, my experience is on brick and is unsealed so that the brick can “breathe,” so things could be different with wood and sealer. You might try contacting the company!
