@@Scroolewse This definitely isn't true across the board. Age plays a huge factor as well as just simple personality differences. For example, being high in trait openness. There's been a bit of research on the subject and conservatives are on average lower in trait openness and less likely to stray from sources that confirm their bias, but liberals are more quick to align themselves with views shared within echo chambers. We can all do better, and trying to pigeonhole people on the "other side" is counterproductive.

I love this, when he said "why should I be hated for who cannot help but be?" It perfectly sums up what I've been trying to put into words in a year. One of the best talks I've ever seen

Amazed that this has so many dislikes. What is there not to like about the message that we need to communicate with people who are different from ourselves? Such an important message and so well put. Humanizing our supposed enemies will hopefully help people not to be so radical with their politics.

Do not be discouraged by those who shut out this man's words, because those are people who simply cannot consider other views without questioning their own worldview, and by extension, their sense of self. If you rejected this without any deep thought or consideration, I challenge you to try to understand and empathize with this man's viewpoint. This is a real Americian with courage. He’s absolutely right about the dangerous echo chambers of news content. I loved how he mentioned because of these chambers we get reactions. Mankind is not a reactive animal. We are all spiritual beings with same emotions. Dialogue, conversation, and talk are what evolve man.

The divisions in society are not knew. But there is something about how the curently structered that makes it so much worse. People are so much nicer in person.

Touched on a lot of important points: failings of our educational system, face-to-face conversations in "your neck of the woods"... Well-prepared talk.

On a second viewing, the only problem with my conjecture though is that the laughing is heard when the camera is just on him too, and then, when they give shots of the audience, the laughing seamlessly continues. So I guess the likelihood is that it's NOT a laughtrack. Still weird though.

Jul TruSek He almost discovered the fact that the Alt Right is actually a _reaction_ to a coercive force acting on Western society. It was never a movement oriented towards imperialism; it was one meant to _preserve_ what made the West _what it is._ In our present day we are now losing all of that because of everyone else's goal to "diversify" (AKA deconstruct) everything here until Europe and North America become the same as every other place on the planet.

He is recommending people actually stop and use intelligent thought instead of general party line views to form opinions about other people. He is suggesting that perhaps people on both sides of an issue might have some valid points worth listening to. He is effectively saying that both sides are part of the problem and until everyone stops echoing back the party line, nothing will ever change for the better. This is the problem, because most people don't want to step out of their comfortable little bubbles(on either side) and admit that maybe, just maybe, they could be wrong too. The answer usually sits somewhere in the middle, and so long as people get flack for conceding even a tiny little nothing point to their opposition, it's safer to stay on the edges than admit you can see points on both sides. Now, he shows a good amount of his bias in the way he talks about the people that he himself says had a point. But, at least he appears to be trying to understand the other side, and he appears to be interested in the exchange of views required to foster understanding and civility. For that, he has my respect. He also almost touches on the cause of these issues, but just doesn't quite seem to grasp it. History, Literature, study of the human condition, these are the "liberal arts" a.k.a. the Humanities. and until the I.Q.(science and math) stops ignoring the E.Q. the trend is just going to get worse.

I said this elsewhere, but no. The names that he mentioned towards the end disqualify the whole thing (in my opinion). He name dropped the left wing equivalents of the leaders of the alt right. It would seem he has the ability to recognize the extremes on the right and how they got to be so extreme, but is not even able to comprehend that he belongs to the far opposite end of the spectrum, much less realize that their is a problem with that.

^ found the utopian seriously though, globalism isn't a new phenomenon. it's the same mechanism that all empires have used to centralize power. it's the homogenization of peoples and their associated traditions and cultures. in your utopia, yes, globalism is great. maybe we will get there in 2000 years provided we don't drive ourselves to extinction. but right now, people across the world are very different, and they are not going to willingly give up their culture for some sort of ideal. you need to be more pragmatic. humanity isn't ready yet.

you are right about the benefits of proliferation of information. you are also mostly right about human differences being dependent on culture. the research on that is a little conflicting, but does lean towards nurture over nature. you need to consider the reasons humans naturally want boundaries, both physical and ideological. there are evolutionary reasons for that instinct that predate language. again, you're going all utopian on me. you need to consider human nature and where people are in the world RIGHT NOW, don't focus on idealisms.

Though I appreciate that you've made the effort to see the other side, I can't say I agree with too many of your conclusions. Though a definite strong note for you is your willingness to do something in the community! Good job, and I hope those efforts are blessed both for you and the impact they have. Real conversation are very important. I hate it when people can only talk certain issues with those they know agree with them.

Because it is real. I mean really, really real. :) It takes many forms, trust me. Even racism in other countries like the allegedly homogeneous China (it isn't, trust me. Before you say it 'Han Chinese' is a cultural concept that the Chinese have. They have more biological and cultural diversity than you think... and they HATE each other) happens quite a lot... even if YOU cannot see the difference between them and think they're all one big happy family.

Digital echo chambers are a real and existential problem/danger to our society. Being from the left spectrum of political discourse, I found myself trapped in those same echo chambers, although they were'n pushed on my by the social media (since I don't use any of the popular sources like Facebook, Twitter, etc), but I still watched YT videos that confirmed my point of view. Don't get me wrong, I'm still on the same side of an isle, but I've started to listen more and more of people that had something to say against the bad stuff that were born from the Left, people like Bill Maher, Sam Harris, David Pakman... People that are aware of the problems that the regressive Left is generating and not owning or simply not seeing it as a problem. Of course I'm referring to the cancel culture, white male demonisation, etc... If only those harder members from the Alt right had the same strength to start talking about all the stuff that bad in their movement. I know we'll never agree on the religion, economy and some other stuff, but the dialog and the aproachment on many subjects can be talked about and resolved.

This is very thoughtful and something which I can relate to. With one foot in both worlds you realize that there more to the story but if you aren't allowed to tell your story how can we move beoynd this?

When I see all the negativity in the comment section, I see very few valid arguments against this gentleman, rather I see people who are either so full of hate they dare not think of change or people who are afraid of what the change will bring. When ignorance is comforting, willfull ignorance is favoured to enlightenment.

I dont completely agree, but at least youre helping to open a dialogue. Thats an olive branch capable of bringing about a lot of good.

Ironically you missed the point. He admits that both sides live in echo chambers and invites progressives to try and understand the alt-right from their point of view. That was the whole reason for him going undercover.

Conversation is key, it's easier than most People think and when you break in down most people have a certain political ideology due to few reasons as well as personality. I'm a democratic socialist and my wife is a traditional Conservative, we disagree on things but always talk and find compromise.

I never thought about the recommendation algorithm in social networks is actually functioning as an echo chamber which amplifies my own preference and block the other ideas that I might not like !!! This is really an interesting point!!

Theo's taking a huge cue from Daryl Davis, as we all should. We need more folks willing to have difficult conversations that are actual conversations (talking, listening, and all), and not shouting matches in echo chambers.

Excellent! Great talk. The echo chamber problem is serious. Racism, sexism, nationalism, classism and all forms of bigotry are illogical. We need a few good people like the speaker.

Good talk. It's always good to try to understand where the people who are different from us get their own perspective. I don't know why this talk has a net score of 0, as of this moment. It was good. It offered a solution to bridging our current political chasm. Some people in the comments section said that people applauded out of politeness, but if that how you saw it, how can you explain the standing ovation towards the end.

Hey TED. Why don't you invite Jared Taylor on to drop some meaty, thought provoking words. If you want to understand this movement, then you need provide a space for dialogue of people you vehemently disagree with. I don't expect you will do it, but the conversation is important, and you need to hear both sides to have an understanding of where we are and where we're headed. Ignoring one side will only exacerbate the current situation which may or may not lead to an uptick in violence.

Damn this is amazing. I have always been a strong conservative, and always will be, but Theo's words have definitely changed my perspective. I know the media and government polarises our society, and have always been disturbed with dangerous left ideology. After this, I am going to start reacting to these instances with more compassion. None of us chose how, where, what we where born as. We are all influenced by life, some better, some worse. Hate and anger won't get us anywhere.

That was BEAUTIFUL- I love it. We're in the human race together. It's not like we're all different species- we're different like how a "tree grows in the cold mountains" is different to a "tree that grows in humidity" - the earth changes our appearance, but we're the same on the inside. We all just want to eat and sleep and laugh, not be alone, love people, and not die soon haha. Courageous conversation with difficult people, yes yes. Evolution boi!

I feel this talk 100% as someone who has done similar to what he described. Both sides have to try to see the other points (not what their echo chamber tells them it is) in order to come together and realize we aren't so different. Just molded slightly differently based on our life experiences and then told to hate each other by powerful, wealthy interests.

I call BS, Redemptify!! You do NOT know how I/we perceive the world. I know this because every single day I find myself YELLING at my tv/computer screen because conservative media insists on putting words in my mouth that are demonstratively false and, frankly, insulting. Watching Fox News is like watching a case study in naive realism. I'd never argue that progressive media is unbiased (as per the phrase "progressive media,") but I find that overall the left welcomes competent voices from the right to take part in discussions waaaay more than vice-versa. This isn't simply an opinion- study after study proves that consumers of progressive media. (NPR, MSNBC, etc.) are better informed than their conservative counterparts.

From my experience, both the left and the right accuse each other of ‘living in a bubble.’ It doesn’t help that most of the engagement we have with each other is through trolls.

This is one of the best talks I have seen in a long time.

For once, people will discuss and it will be nice in a new wonderland ! Oh boy -_-

This Is really good Ted Talk. One point I would like to make is in terms of communication. It is very difficult to have communication with individuals or so called trolls on the Internet. People hide behind their computers and say the most vile things. This is why he said in person dialogue face to face is really the best way to communicate with individuals. If even a fraction of the people that said things in person the vile and rude way online, there would be so much hostility between people. Also if you notice these rude individuals online never show their face!!

He did NOT say he was a 'positive influence' - he said that they may have the answers to some questions being asked. Also, he may not. But if you choose not to listen to whatever he has to say first, then you have no evidence with which to judge apart from that produced by your own bias. That's what I got from that anyway... but I guess we each colour the world according to the way we want to see it.

After assaulting his girlfriend, and attacking the zoo security guards, the police were called. Alonzo Ashley resisted arrest, jumping around acting strange calling out “I’m King Kong and I’m going to eat somebody.” (He was found to have drug paraphernalia including drugs that has not been identified or how much was in his possession.) Police used a taser on contact with Alonzo’s body in order to subdue him while resisting arrest. The paramedics had already been called because of his odd behaviour and due his extraordinary strength while scuffling with zoo security and police. Alonzo while resisting arrest assaulted police including, punching and biting them while resisting arrest. While trying to subdue this man who seemed to be on something that gave him extraordinary strength to resist (on some sort of drugs) police tazed him and finally got him restrained which took 4 security people and officers. They then placed him on his stomach for 3-5 minutes, then they noticed that he had vomited. His heart had stopped. The paramedics immediately tried to resuscitate Alonzo, but due to what ever was in his system, standard resuscitation measures could not bring him back. He died on the scene and was pronounced dead at the hospital. No charges were laid on the officers or zoo security. All actions were found to be justified due to the actions of Alonzo Ashley, who was not just a man that was strolling through the zoo minding his own business.

He raises some good points. I am a Conservative, I'm not alt-right or alt-anything. David Duke and Richard Spencer have no voices contributing to my echo chamber, if you will. Milo is entertaining, but not part of my brain trust. Maybe these guys are essential to the Alt Right, but let's not confuse them with Conservatism. The speaker made a few mentions of Conservatism but the Alt Right is not Conservative. We're philosophical and principled, not ideological.

Really good talk. Agreed with a lot of it. There was another couple of excellent talks which highlighted the exact same thing towards the end - talk to people you disagree with.

In the age of "This is my opinion. Unfriend me if you don't agree" posts, by doing that, we've done exactly what he said not to do. By "blocking" people who don't agree with us and staying in our perfect bubbles, we don't have meaningful conversations or see the world from someone else's eyes, which is what got us where we are today. People need to sit down and have those dialogues with people who aren't just like them.

When you demonise people, acuse them of being monsters all the time, you will entrench their views, you will harden their hearts and they will become what you've painted them out to be. However that does not mean you are wonderful, it means that you are just as intolerant as them. Self reflection and proper conversations are the only way you will solve problems.
