Was it no Bob Marley who insisted none of the band members sign a contract because Rastafarians do not sign contract? That was the reason why Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer left the Wailers group because they refused to be part of the band without signing any contracts. Chris Blackwell loved things that way as Bob Marley ended up owning royalties to some songs he never wrote. Rita Marley was deeply involved also.

It's not as simple as that there MUST be more to it than that-it's most likely that "Family Man" was told that he would continue to receive future royalty income for the songs that he wrote for Bob. Remember he couldn't read or write and he was dealing with a crafty/dishonest owner of a record company. It was when Bob hired Don Taylor as his business manager that he was able to stop Chris Whitewell from claiming that he was the producer of the albums that the Wailers did with Island record. There are numerous reggae artists who have had bad experiences with Island record such as Jimmy Ciff, Max Romeo and others. Max Romeo once described his record deal with Island records as a "death certificate". And why would Lee 'Stratch' Perry record a song naming Blackwell as a vampire, “sucking the blood of the sufferers"???

Without any doubt, Aston and his late brother, Carlton, made massive contributions to the success of Bob Marley and the Wailers. To the law, he may have been settled, but to natural justice, it would appear that he has been shortchanged. And his inability to read and write seemed to have been exploited and only made matters worse for him.

Itwas so sad to hear these great icons of Bob Marley and The Wailers dismissed as merely session musicians the whole episode is distasteful, especially when you consider the fact that there is plenty to go around!!!! from what we know about the ethos of Bob Marley many of us do not think that this is what he would’ve wanted for his friends There is more than enough to go around. I think many would not agree that family man and his brother Carlton were mainly session musicians !!!! they were integral to the sound, personally, I think family man was stitched by his own attorneysto sign that earlier compromise agreement because lawyers have a way of manipulating your decision to what they really want which is not always necessarily what is best for the client but when they convince you that “that“ is the best you can get and then you’re confronted with horrendous cost. It makes it much easier for you to relent and just sign what they put in front of you Because you have to believe your lawyers, right I think hi’s lawyers at the time making him, sign a badthe compromise deal all those years ago and it came back to haunt himonce he had better clarity of thought and the process all in all it is a real shame. What happened, it was so not necessary There is so much money being generated by the estate that not one of his seeds shall sit ion the sidewalk and beg their bread I can only put pray, and hope that the man is made good before his time on earth ends. This is such a sad story..”greed”tarnishing the Marley brand

All this confusion and controversies wouldn’t have been in existence should 3 of them were alive today. I mean, Bob, Aston and Carl. May they all continue to rest in peace. Go listen to Al Anderson’s interview. He utterly despised Aston Barrett’s personality and totally disparaged him, but what he didn’t deny was Aston Barrett’s musical genius, and he gave Aston his just due for his contributions to Bob Marley’s music. And the distinctive bass line and a lot of the arrangement was all Aston Barrett. But I’ve also said that Bob and Aston drove one another to excellence. Would Bob Marley’s sound been as delicious and evergreen without Aston Barrett’s contributions? Probably not. But without Bob Marley, the world would probably never have heard of Aston Barrett. If Aston were the star and not Bob, then after Bob’s passing Aston would have simply found another singer and replicated the success he had with Bob. But this didn’t happen because Bob was indeed the music and the message. Bob had the vision. But Aston Barrett and Carlton Barrett never received their just due after Bob passed.

The Carlton brothers are the reason anyone listened to Bob in the first place. The drums and the bass sounds those two brothers produced is the cornerstone and foundation of the Wailers. That's why i have a problem when things aren't expressly made clear legally just to avoid situations like this. Family members will come in and make everyone who worked hard to make Bob succeed look like leeches. And for Aston to lose his brother the way he did, should also be grounds for consideration as well. All those years making that type of music for nothing and to be called mere session artists or backups. That ain't right at all.

How does Rita and Chris sleep at nights, doesn't their conscience bother them. Chris Blackwell is the happiest out of the whole lot, I understand Rita's not getting as much because of the absence of a Will. End up sad innit, such a brilliant and successful catalogue but the main players - the band members who if it wasn't for them and their chemistry the brand wouldn't have been such a success. No one can deny that; but they are treated like dogs, funny it is and they are the primary source of the success and they ended being treated as dirt.

You gotta remember Rita had to fight for her rights, too. My good friend Dougie OneLove, R.I.P, helped her get some musical rights.
