Productized services are NOT black and white...
Here's a better way to think about it.
Think of productized services as a continuum and ask yourself...
On one side you have services. On the other, we have a product.
Productized services are in the middle.
The question is, "How productized do I want to be?"
As Jack Butcher eloquently stated...
👉 Service is work without process.
👉 Productized services work with a process.
👉 Products are processed without work.
I have clients that want NOTHING to do with client service delivery and so their model and offerings skew far to the right.
I have other clients who love being a part of the client experience and want to offer up certain levels of customization, they find themselves near the middle.
I have some clients that want to scale to the moon...they are more 'product'.
I have others that want high profit, want to stay small, and thus can be more towards the middle or a bit more left.
There are a variety of ways to make a service more like a product.
Many ingredients will give you more leverage in delivery vs not.
You get to decide.
Your goals and values will drive where you are on the continuum.

I have been following you for awhile (maybe years)... and I've always been on board with this being the direction that I wanted to take my accounting services but I've never really wrapped my head around how I could do it. This continuum may be the AHA moment that I needed.

Thank you Greg! This is exactly what I’ve been going through this week. I’ve eliminated all other services too and focus only on web development while creating testable SOPs. Any advice on dealing with a shrinking potential market? It feels weird putting your eggs in one basket but the process is so much clearer and less stressful as a two person agency. Thanks for your time and effort.

To me, productized always meant "manufacturing". That's how I see it. It's repeating the same steps to get a desired outcome. Then basically asking yourself, "How involved do I want to be?" and "At what points?"

That def is a good way to look at it but I think it's almost too simplified for the nature of work you get with services looking to productize. some people think that there can be no customizations along the repeatable process (conveyor belt). The box at the end of the belt doesn't always need to look EXACTLY the same to deliver the same result. But that process, should never change. And the levels of customization need to be contained.
Do you believe that for some services tou have limitation on where you want to be? I mean some services define narrower biundaries that define how productized you can be.

@@gregoryjhickman In the video you stated that the question to ask is "How productized you want to be?" So I commented to understand more. I believe that it is not always about how productized we want to be but rather the question to ask first, how productized we can be, and then how productized we want to be within the limits we would have unveiled through the first question. My question is Do you believe that not all services can be fully productized?
