A Beginner's Color Pencil project - Drawing a Pear with 7 colors

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This is a tutorial for people who are interested in learning how to use colour pencils. This pear drawing is created using only 7 pencils and covers some of the basic techniques of layering and using thinners to blend the colours.
I used Polychromos pencils:
May Green
Permanent Green Olive
Van Dyke Brown
Nougat
Payne's grey
Warm Grey II
White
If you wish to use prismacolors, you can use:
Lime Peel
Olive Green
Light Umber
Sepia
Warm Grey 90%
Warm Grey 30%
White
The pencil is blended using Odorless mineral spirits, I use Art Spectrum brand, but there are many alternative brands (such as Gamsol) . It is a staple product in oil painting and is widely available in art stores.
I used Fabriano accademia paper, but I have also had success using :
-Fabriano Artistico Hot press water color paper paper
- Stonehenge ( this will drink up a lot of thinners!! but has a nice soft result)
-Arches hot press watercolor paper
-Canson Mi-Teintes, White
The reference picture can be found on my website:

    So glad I found your channel - watching your tutorials, you actually SHOW us how to draw this pear - it seems to me that there is a big difference in being taught how to draw with colour pencils as opposed to just watching an artist on KZread draw something. To me that is not being taught. I learn next to nothing watching other artists on here. This tutorial is exactly what I've been looking for. I feel that I've learned more about using colour pencils in the last 12 minutes than I ever have watching other artists. A big thank you - I look forward to trying to do this pear tomorrow.

    Hi I am just getting back into drawing/painting; I have discovered the world of colored pencils which I had not used ever. These seem to be so nice to relax and yet get realistic results. I needed to see a tutorial from start to finish and with only 7 colors. I have been working on paper that is just to light and can't stand up to any wash. This tutorial is just the push I needed to make the investment in some better quality paper and pencils, bravo. I hope I can have similar results if I apply myself. I am in the US and since the election I have been wound tight as a drum, thank you again for the lesson you are great

Going to get the 12 with the ocean animals next . I feel with those 60 it's more than enough colors to make absolutely anything.. but eventually do want to get all 150 color's. But from what I've seen so far the 48 I have so far plus the other 12 is all you need

    Could I blend the layers with a prismacolor blender marker instead with similar results? Is there a maximum number of blends that you can achieve with a blender marker or thinner? I know a blender pencil can only be used for the final blend because it creates that wax barrier. Thanks for the beginner videos!

  • @CassandraHanley

    @CassandraHanley

    5 жыл бұрын

    Blender markers use alcohol as a solvent, so a marker should have a similar effect to the OMS, although maybe not quite as effective depending on the brand of pencil ( experimentation would be key here) The amount of layers you can achieve can be extremely dependant on so, so many things! but if you use light layers of pencil, and DO NOT!!!! squash the tooth of your paper with pressure from the tip of your pencil, you can get many many layers of pencil onto your paper before you experience any resistance... I very rarely hit a point on my pieces in which I can not layer anymore using this process of light layers and blending with OMS. I hate to give the answer "It depends" but in this case it really does apply... maybe this should be the topic of an upcoming video

    Honesty, just use whatever you have on hand! I name brand names and colours for people who want to follow along exactly, but you could absolutely get a decent result with standard crayola pencils and some reasonably sturdy paper with a little bit of tooth. This video does revolve somewhat around using solvent to blend the pencils, but depending on your pencil, you may be able to blend it out with a clear alcohol marker. Where there is a will there is a way, never let a lack of fancy supplies get in your way :)

    Been given an assignment by my art-teacher... Draw an apple or a pear 🍎🍐👩🏻‍🎨 Have now binge watched "How to draw a fruit" videos, and I just wanted to let you know YOUR VIDEO IS THE BEST! Thank you 🙏🏻😊 Quick question: I don't have any of these name brand pencils that you mentioned. I have the Caran d’Ache Supracolor Soft pencils... Which colors should I use? Also, I don't have that "fluid"-thing you used with a paint brush... Can I use water instead or would that ruin it?

  • @CassandraHanley

    @CassandraHanley

    5 жыл бұрын

    So, you can use any brand colour pencil you have to create this. I would chose a light yellowish green, a dark green, light brown, dark brown, a very dark grey (or black if that’s all you have, light great and a white. Don’t stress too much about having the right colours, your pear will just look like a different variety if it’s a bit more green or yellow!!! As for the blender, well I am using odorless mineral spirit here, which breaks down the waves of the pencil and helps push the pigment around... unfortunately water won’t do the same thing since it will just sit on top of the wax. In a pinch you could use isopropyl alcohol, or a colourless marker which will also break down the wax, but not as well. Baby oil will work, but I don’t recommend it, as it will break down the paper over time and it would be sad to ruin the piece if it turns into something you like (I love looking back on my old school projects :) If you don’t have anything to blend with, that’s fine, but you’ll just have to take your time to build up the layers slowly. It takes longer, but you will get there. Just have patience and build up the layers slowly As you get the colours built up you can use a technique called burnishing to polish the finished result. I don’t have anything on my channel about burnishing yet, but I’m sure you will find some excellent advice here on KZread! I hope this helps, good luck!!

    Since all the stores are closed because of the lockdown (im in Switzerland) are there any alternatives to odorless mineral spirits?

    If you have any rubbing alcohol on hand, that may be useful, but won’t be as effective as the oms, ( you will have to work harder to get the pigment to live) you could possibly use other oil paint solvents, like turps if you have them on hand... but you have to be mindful of the fumes and work in a well ventilated area. One thing I would absolutely advise against is baby oil... you will see it recommended as a pencil solvent, but the oil will seep into your paper and will not evaporate off like oms, turps, botanical solvents (like zest it or spike oil) or alcohol

    For alcohol- you could also use a colourless blender marker like the ones made by copic Or prismacolor

    I haven’t been using the academia lately, after I got a batch with a change to the surface that caused funny little patches where my pencil wouldn’t “stick”. That might have been a one off, I haven’t had a chance to find out since I have pretty much switched to cotton watercolour papers. I would still happily use the academia for studies and experiments though. It is pretty solid and has held up to all the punishment I have thrown at it with my colour pencils and mineral spirit.. I can’t say I have used oil pastels on it though, I can’t see any reason why it shouldn’t hold up to those either. Being that it is a cheaper paper, it might be worth getting a sheet or two and trying it out?

    Ok, so option 1 is to just keep laying down colour.... if you build up your layers slowly, and just keep laying down colour, you will hit a point where the pigments just start to blend together on their own... unfortunately my arthritis will totally kick my butt if I blend to that extent.. but it works( if you want to use this method, use smoother paper since you’ll get to this point sooner ) Otherwise you can use a blending pencil or your white pencil to blend, but I don’t like adding layers that don’t add to the final result. Don’t use baby oil, while it will work to blend your colours, it will leave an icky oily mark on your paper and it will break the paper down over time

    Can I use baby oil to blend the colors if I follow this tutorial?

  • @CassandraHanley

    @CassandraHanley

    Well, physically, yes you could.. baby oil does blend out the pencils... but it is definitely not something I would recommend. The baby oil seeps into the paper and stays there. It can really damage your paper and and chances are you won’t get as many layers of pencil down... plus it can make your art degrade way faster! If your in a pinch and don’t have access to odourless mineral spirits, then I would choose an alcohol blender, (like a colourless marker for example) it might not work as well as a solvent is the mineral thinners -depending on your pencils., but it will evaporate away from your piece leaving your paper in good condition

    It is odorless mineral spirit.. you generally find it in the oil painting section as it is used to thin and clean up oil paint.. There are many different brands, but they all do pretty much the same thing :)

    Can we use water colour pencil

  • @CassandraHanley

    @CassandraHanley

    3 жыл бұрын

    I have seen a few people do this piece using watercolour pencils (and Derwent inktense pencils as well!) my only advice would be to remember that watercolour pencils dissolve much more easily and the pigment spreads a lot further than traditional colour pencils, so you may need to take that into consideration as you work :)

    I have seen many people use watercolour pencils to do this! I would suggest that you Use good quality watercolour paper to avoid warping and 2. Let everything dry very well before starting in the next layer. (Watercolour pencils will lift if you add to much water to multiple layers) If you try this, let me know how it goes!!
