A Baptist Mom's Journey to Catholicism - Melissa Slagle

Melissa Slagle was raised Baptist, but really began to be grow in her relationship with Jesus through the mentorship of a high school teacher.
Later, when one of her daughters announced she was becoming involved with United Pentecostals, who didn’t believe in the Trinity, it led Melissa to wonder which version of Christianity had the correct interpretation of Scripture.
The quest to understand that dilemma led Melissa first to a thorough re-reading of the New Testament, and eventually to the claims of the Catholic Church, which had preserved the interpretation of Scripture from the time of the apostles.

"Faith " "believing " is the key for salvation and nothing else. Adding our good works is an insult to God, it's telling God that the sacrifice of Jesus Christ is not enough we have to put good works on top of if it. As a child, I was not raised in any church, but I was often invited by friends to attend their churches. I went but never felt any sacredness. Once I became an adult and was free to choose a Church, I prayed about it, and simply asked God to show me which one was His Church. I had also noticed growing up the division and the lack of continuity, so I knew this was not right. A short time later a friend invited me to the Catholic Church, and when I walked in, I felt at home. I felt the presence of God and the respect for God in the Mass. I was home, and have been a Catholic since I was about 25. I feel so grateful to God that He led me to His Church.

I was so glad Candace that I came across your comment item to at one time sincerely asked Jesus to show me his church here on earth the one that he prayed to the father in heaven about in the Bible and God will answer anything for us but we have to ask first. In the first part of my life I was a nominal Catholic and then as I started to develop a relationship with Jesus that’s when I ask him the question and then I started going to different churches and eventually one day I was in a church and I could feel Jesus‘s presence there people were praising him and it was wonderful but the next thing I knew all the people had left and I was there by myself and three things happened almost simultaneously, 1-I had a strong realization that I was sitting in an empty building, 2-I had an extremely intense feeling of peace that I only experienced once before when I was almost in an accident and I shouted out the name Jesus and I felt the same extreme peace, and 3-words suddenly came into my mind that I knew was from Jesus-“ Go back-I am in the tabernacle. I only wish then I would’ve known about the Latin mass but I only knew about the Novus ordo churches. Today my family and I go to the Latin mass for us it is so much better for the growth of our faith. God bless you and everyone that reads this.

Very similar! Was baptized Lutheran at age 6. Oddly enough, I feel like I might have had a big understanding for such little one. Off and on, different churches, but their conflicting doctrines left me conflicted. I was unfortunately raised rather anti-catholic. My sweet mother would always recommend that I never, ever marry an Italian or a Catholic. Yup. Did both! I found myself pregnant almost immediately. We planned our wedding. He was one of five siblings. Not one of them ever set foot in a public school. I knew instinctively how important it would be for us to marry in the Church. So I had 2 years of RCIA and another year or so for our annulments to come through. My daughter was 3 or 4 by the time we were cleared to marry. One of the happiest days of my life. I actually think becoming a Catholic was more delightful to me than becoming a Mrs! I have just continued falling in love with Mother Church. He will lead those who seek. I loved your story! ⛪✝️⛪

the beauty of the Catholic Faith includes the unity going to mass in San Franscico Las Vegas, New York Cincinnati including in Rome the homily is different even the language is different but he structure and readings are all the same, knowing and hearing and receiving the Eucharist gives me intense feeling of togetherness, belonging sharing hoping all TOGETHER. its beautiful and so available. So when Jesus speaks of wedding feast and His bride is the Church. Which Church? there are 70k denominations, what did the apostles believe where is the authority. if you don't like the pastor of a protestant church you move on, you choose by the charasm of the pastor, the Eucharist is the center of the mass, it centers me in Jesus and brings me to a wonderful closeness. The Journey Home is such a wonderful program, lots of stuff on youtube I love the episode the ten versus I never saw.

I suspect it is an American education system problem. I am a Catholic, and an author of 3 professional textbooks on auditing. I am also engaged to set risk management examination questions and the directions to all examiners were to follow Bloom’s taxonomy- which requires us to set questions which the graduate candidate has to analyse and apply. So called low level “remembering” questions are reduced to only 5 percent of total questions. My discontent here is it over-emphasises so called higher level thinking for candidates who will one day become risk managers in the banks. However, this creates a problem because then, everything can be argued and the candidate really is not encouraged to build a firm foundation of fundamental facts and principles on risk management. Just like the Protestant churches. Everything is open to interpretation when the real world is more like, to use an analogy, the medical profession. Doctors are taught to diagnose/ identify diseases and treat with right medical procedures or medication. Prescription is not on a free-for-all decision-making basis. There are only certain correct procedures/ medication and the doctor has to remember them well, not apply his own novel theories! ( is that why Americans have so many conspiracy theories?) The average American student has very shocking ignorance about geography or history. Is it any wonder that there is a problem with the banking industry? History and experience are downgraded and high level thinking ( built on scanty facts) is emphasised.

This is a pretty profound insight. The American system has its benefits, and you notice them when confronted with the contrasting approaches from other countries/cultures where strict obedience to authority/seniority and rote learning dominate. The downsides are as you mention, however. It introduces a lot of noise over issues where there should be consensus.

@@PeaceTrainUSA-1000 : I am ethnic Chinese but educated in English under the British system in South East Asia. I had my first degree in New Zealand where I taught taekwondo. I do have some experience in Asian philosophies despite being a Catholic. The real Chinese use rote learning because of the way Chinese characters ( their equivalent to the English alphabets ) are written. Each symbol represent a quality like a women, house, mountain, etc. The culture is different even to me, but it has produced amazing skills in Mathematics, medicine and sciences. It is a different paradigm of learning- see their advantages in areas which the West are still not exploring. By the way, the New Zealanders ( in a far off place) are quite intelligent and yet open to ideas. Their education while very focussed on rugby ( ! ) still produce some excellent human beings and minds. I am not saying that the American system is totally wrong but it has failed the masses. It takes decades before the errors are recognised. Though with the amount of conspiracy theories circulating nowadays, the country will probably go to war rathervthan recognise its errors.

@@supershooter20 The US was founded on enlightenment principles and rejected the received authority of church and aristocracy. This is a very radical start. It also selected immigrants unsatisfied with their own status quo, folks who didn't believe their birth was their destiny. Suspicion of authority is in the DNA, so the education system reflects that. Its bones are quite sound, so the say it failed the masses is an overstatement. It has some particular flaws that come from the criticisms you point out and I agree with, particularly wrt to math and sciences. These flaws are becoming more glaring as ideology is starting to seep in more and more (rejection of standardized testing and claiming math is "racist"). That ideology is very dangerous for the future of the country. (One of the most useful tips I got in high school was to memorize the trig identities so they become conceptual units you could manipulate in later math classes. We don't do enough memorization anymore).

I was born and raised Catholic, last night my daughter in law who belongs to a small non denomination church whose grandpa is the head and pastor told me to trust what I read in the Bible with the Holy Spirit to guide me. I defended our church and told me the usual why do we pray to Mary and the Saints sort of worship them and of course the quotes from the Bible. First thing I straightened her out was discern the difference between praying and worshipping ie Latria and hyperDulia. I went on to explain the whole concept of Christianity through the Catholic lens. Needless to say she was in tears cause I asked her about the enduring teaching and tradition of our church from apostolic succession and ordination of our priest. With so many denomination everywhere it seems once every block we are more divided than unified than ever before. So, before she left I asked her for 300 yrs after Jesus died how did Christian’s worship and prayed? Well us Catholics didn’t need the gospel cause we had traditions and manuscripts from early fathers and traditions passed on thru generation before the Bible yet still enduring timelessly and the same mass since founding less the charismatic aspect with great band to keep the mass going.

" It's NOT the fruit that has been poisoned but the tree. " Pope Francis says, " I'm not the Vicar of Christ." Since St. Peter, all the other Pontiffs went by this title. There is much more to learn about him. Is he a Free Mason, Italian style. We don't know whether he is or not.

Pope Francis did not eliminate the title Vicar of Christ. All the titles are listed this year as “historic titles.” He explained about the title, “Vicar of Christ,” that a Vicar is in place of someone who has gone away, but in reality, Jesus never left us. In the sense the Pope is referring to, this is true. Jesus did say, Behold, I am with you always …. You may not like the Pope, but we’ve had many Popes, some pretty bad, some great, but all had human faults. Even Peter, our first Pope, wasn’t perfect. Padre Pio said we should never criticize the Pope. The Magisterium and the Pope are guided by the Holy Spirit never to teach error in faith or morals. The history of the Church is a bumpy road but Jesus gave Peter the Keys and a promise, and I trust Jesus absolutely that the gates of hell will not prevail against His Church.

Because dear soul, they are searching for the truth. Yet it is right under their noses. The Catholic Church is the only church started by Jesus Himself. The rest are all man made.jrsus gives the Catholic Church stability and he keeps it sailing safely. The rest are just floundering cos they are rudderless. Read the Church Father's. OUR LORD’S PROMISES ATTACHED TO THE PRAYING OF THE CHAPLET OF DIVINE MERCY AS REVEALED TO ST. FAUSTINA KOWALSKA 1. “I promise that the soul that will venerate this image (of Divine Mercy) will not perish. I also promise victory over (its) enemies already here on earth, especially at the hour of death. I Myself will defend it as My own glory.” (Diary, 48) 2. “The souls that say this chaplet will be embraced by My mercy during their lifetime and especially at the hour of their death.” (Diary, 754) 3. “When hardened sinners say it, I will fill their souls with peace, and the hour of their death will be a happy one.” (Diary, 1541) 4. “When they say this chaplet in the presence of the dying, I will stand between My Father and the dying person, not as a just Judge but as a merciful Savior.” (Diary, 1541) 5. “Whoever will recite it will receive great mercy at the hour of death.” (Diary, 687) 6. “Priests will recommend it to sinners as their last hope of salvation. Even if there were a sinner most hardened, if he were to recite this chaplet only once, he would receive grace from My infinite mercy…I desire to grant unimaginable graces to those souls who trust in My mercy.” (Diary, 687) 7. “To priests who proclaim and extol My mercy, I will give wondrous power; I will anoint their words and touch the hearts of those to whom they will speak.” (Diary, 1521) 8. “The prayer most pleasing to Me is prayer for the conversion for sinners. Know, my daughter, that this prayer is always heard and answered.” (Diary, 1397) 9. “At three o’clock, implore My mercy, especially for sinners; and, if only for a brief moment, immerse yourself in My Passion, particularly in My abandonment at the moment of agony…I will refuse nothing to the soul that makes a request of Me in virtue of My Passion.” (Diary, 1320; also, cf. Diary, 1572) 10. “Souls who spread the honor of My mercy…at the hour of death I will not be a Judge for them, but the Merciful Savior.” (Diary, 1075) 11. “The two rays denote Blood and Water…These two rays issued from the very depths of My tender mercy when My agonized Heart was opened by a lance on the Cross. These rays shield souls from the wrath of My Father…I desire that the first Sunday after Easter be the Feast of Mercy…whoever approaches the Fount of Life on this day will be granted complete remission of sins and punishment. Mankind will not have peace until it turns with trust to My mercy.” (Diary, 299-300) 12. “I desire that the Feast of Mercy…be solemnly celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter…The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion (in a state of grace on this day) shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment.” (Diary, 699) 13. “Through this chaplet you will obtain everything, if what you ask for is compatible with My will.” (Diary, 1731) 14. “My mercy is greater than your sins and those of the entire world.” (Diary, 1485) Note: Excerpts taken from the Diary of St. Faustina Kowalska, titled Divine Mercy in My Soul, ©1987, Congregation of Marians of the Immaculate Conception, Stockbridge, MA 01263.
