We were about in the same situation as you I had two heart attacks last year had to have open heart surgery five bypasses February I'd have two stents My Marine boys came home on leave to help run the homestead. We were in the same situation I couldn't work we couldn't pay bills with what the wife was making. And we ended up getting a miracle and getting out of debt. I enjoy your authentic, practical advice that gives enthusiastic pilgrims like me some perspective. And I also appreciate your saying that I’m a farmer too, since I do provide and sell a little outside my small property. It’s really more of an act of love between myself and the people I deal with, who are all known to me in my community in some way. Glad you're better. I went septic 3 years ago after kidney surgery and lost the functionality of the one they tried to fix. A supposed simple surgery had me in the hospital for 10 days just to save my life. You have truly inspired me, I grew up on a farm with cattle. Hogs and huge garden. We mainly sold blackberries, the livestock and garden went in the freezer. I moved away and got a city job for 30 years. I just got a line on 15 acres down the road 30 miles before it went on the market and I'm trying to buy it. It's raw land now with a trailer but I see the potential, since it has county water, septic and elec already there. I don't have big p!ans, just a decent garden, some berries And raise 3-4 feeder pigs a year. I have to keep it simple, I'm partially disabled in my 60s and I'll be doing it alone.

    Lay in there and plow is all you can do brother. My dad had 5 bypasses done and the dr work on him for 8 hours to keep him here with us. In a month when he got to finally come home from the hospital they told him he was done couldn’t work again and needed to take it easy. Keep in mind he only had 30% of his heart working and he was a diesel mechanic but he said I’m not laying down and dying like that. Long story short he worked another17 years after they told him he was done and lived 5 more years after he finally did have to give it up.

    Hi Chris! I've wondered where you were and figured your health problems were the reason we haven't heard from you. God bless Darlene, Treavor and all your neighbors that have helped you out this Summer. I'm glad you made this video. I've farmed full time raising tobacco and have a good sized garden every year now and you are exactly right. You will have bad years despite all you do. This year, my squash came and went fast and about the time my corn was ready to fill out, it turned off dry again. I got a little and the coons got the rest. I lost a good picking at the beginning in my tomatoes from blossom end rot but they still have made a pretty good crop despite early blight. My cucumbers and peppers have done good. People need to understand, farming is not a Monday-Friday 9 to 5 job. No matter how your health is, you can't take a leave of absence and everything will be there when you come back. Crops and livestock need to be tended to and can't be put on hold. I will pray for you and your family and yes, next year will be better. Keep the faith!

I was off antibiotics for four days the first time before I ended up back in the hospital. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. Third time to the hospital they amputated my right leg. Just had surgery to revise my amputation. My wife and son have kept everything going but it's a burden for them. When it rains it pours. I'll be praying for you brother.

    Chris, I’m so sorry your health has been bad, and I’m so grateful you made it through! I’ll share this with my family and ask them to watch. You should consider a go fund me. I know it’s hard, but it could pay the bills and help you recover easier. Some year in the future I want to get some of your pigs to breed and keep, but I have to get the farm first! Please have your family reach out to youtube next time! A few extra prayers never hurt anyone. I had something different but similar, in that I have a benign brain tumor that doctors made smaller so my vision and depth perception came back (and I didn’t die), but they left a super bug in my sinuses (the approach was up through the upper gums and inter nasally). And my kidneys suddenly went from 100% down to 30%. They have since rebounded to 50%. I can live carefully with that, but the sinus issues have been around for 14+ years. I was a single parent with a preteen daughter at the time though, scary. Hang in there and don’t be shy to ask for help.

    Hey Chris I’ve honestly thought about you a lot over the summer. I know your health hasn’t been the greatest so I’ve been praying for you and your family. Glad to see a video from you with an update on things. I miss the Friday night livestreams those helped a young person like myself just getting into hogs out alot and I mean that. Just want to say I really do respect and appreciate the advice you’ve given me and I’ll continue to hope and pray for you and yours. Hopefully your able to continue to give that advice in the near future. It’s been a rough year for us also but we were able to keep our nose to the grindstone and had a nice turn out in the garden and raised some good meat for the freezer. Hope to see a post soon god bless until then

    I couldn't agree more Chris! I've been checking up on you and Darlene every week or so, and worried why you weren't able to put up videos. I figured you were just real busy with life, which happens to everyone. I'm so happy you're doing better!! I weed and weed and prune and work the garden every day after work. The only thing the garden rewards is hard work and care. Probably on average 2 hours a night after work in June and July, plus 6 hours sat and 6 Sunday. Now it's shifted to handling the produce that's coming out of the garden.

    I enjoy your videos. The content is superior to that of many videos produced by others. Possibly, your number of your subscribers could be increased, if the sound quality of your videos could be increased. Perhaps, a mic placed on your person might help. Best Wishes.

    Chris, why can't you sell chickens (and eggs)? Poultry is a higher seller out-selling beef. Selling direct to consumers via the Internet will make you money, no matter what part of the country you live in, isn't that right?

  • @HomesteadingtheHardWay

    @HomesteadingtheHardWay

    2 ай бұрын

    Not true at all . For example here the egg market is completely flooded and no one will pay the price you need to ask for processed chicken . No matter what method you use you can't reach a non existent market . The public also has the view that buying farm direct is buying wholesale . I can sell pullets for a profit and we do fairly good selling chicks , turkey poults sell good but as far as poultry goes that's it .

    Hope you feeling better. I have been raising pigs a lot. But you make a difference. My granddaddy got me in it. We even kill our own bbq alot of them to. But anyway last year I got some that I'm catching heck to size out. I know some where cross with potbelly pig.and Tamworth was mom. I was hoping they get hams like the mom did. But they where a fail. I want to get some little girls from you when I kill these nine off.
