A 7mm model of the Somerset & Dorset Railway at Bath Green Park. SUMMER SATURDAY TIMETABLE

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The railway is based in the 1950's and 60's up to closure. The track layout is as close as can be in a model and includes Green Park station, both S&D and Midland sheds, Midland Bridge and S&D yards, Bath Junction, Devonshire Bank and tunnel, Lyncombe Vale, Combe Down tunnel, Midford station and viaduct, Writhlington Colliery and exchange sidings and is run with correct stock and to timetable for the period

A great strength of this video is the way the depth of field is maintained, the lighting is even, and there’s no continual shifting a focus as it often is in model railroad videos. You should perhaps consider a video on your techniques for shooting since these are really a major factor in why these videos are so beautifully presented.

The S&D is always a magical subject. Thank you so much for allowing us to share in the pleasure of your incredible layout, and for taking the time to make and produce such wonderful videos. For lovers of that venerable railway, apart from Ivo's fine legacy, this is now the closest we will ever get to experiencing a typical summers day at Green Park. Again, thank you.

I used to travel on that line as a kid, we lived in Radstock and regularly got the train to Bath. I recognise some of those scenes, very realistic. I remember having to close the windows before entering the tunnels just after Midford or the carriage would fill with smoke!

Absolutely stunning model with unbelievable detail. I attended the City of Bath Boys' School at beechamcliff and used to watch the freight train struggle with a pusher tanker up to the tunnel. I also was a boy scout with HQ alongside the embankment on the way to Lyncombe vale tunnel. However, I only rode on the SDR twice as Bristol was my usual destination on the GWR where I collected most of my engine numbers..... those were the days. Remember seeing pictures of the engine that came through the end of Green Park Station onto the street i.e. didn't stop at the buffer !

Bath Green Park wasn't a particularly important station, but it's only when you watch all these light engine movements that you realise just how inefficient steam railways really were. More romantic maybe, but one can't help wondering if an earlier move to diesels might have saved the S&D. Excellent model.

Aside from the model, which is as good as Ivo Peter's photographs are, I have to complement you on the fine editing. That raises questions, mainly 'How many cameramen were on duty?' I suppose it is possible today that there was only one cameraman with multiple cameras all running for the duration of the 'shoot' and scenes extracted as required. My interest stems from my days with Std 8mm film. A long time ago.

Glad that you are enjoying the videos. I use a GoPro camera which due to its small size really can go anywhere including in low wagons for shots such as the drivers view from the Peak diesel D34. I film over a period of weeks and will often film a sequence several times before I'm happy with the results. I use Windows Moviemaker to edit all the clips together and then add the captions

Red lights lit on the Peak whilst hauling a train? Wasn't that a fireable offence? The only tail lights allowed were on the last vehicle of a train. Other than that, a gorgeous model.

I have to ask, do you have a representation of Ivo Peters and his MG somewhere on the layout? His name is synonymous with the S&DJR! Regardless, this is a superb layout worthy of all the praise others have heaped on it. Well done!!!

Hi Yes The railway is built over 3 levels with the fiddle yards at Datum, Green Park at +4.5" and Midford station at Datum + 9" . Even though the room is 45 x 15 to achieve my ambitions for the track layout meant multi level. The gradients are around 1 in 50/1 in 60

Thanks and hope the railway encourages you to 'have a go' The S&D was blighted with very steep gradients on the Northern section of line with the climb over The Mendips mostly at 1 in 50 and so ALL expresses over 8 coaches had to have a pilot attached in either direction what ever the train loco.
