Whats up guys! For today’s Tech Thursday we have the complete bike buyers guide! Why a bike costs $200.00 versus one that costs $2,000. The two bikes that we look at today were the Kink GAP BMX Bike (retails in 2020 for $289) and the Subrosa Brand x Shadow Conspiracy custom built aftermarket build!

    I got my son an Kink Curb about 8 weeks ago. I would have killed for that bike as a kid. It is a fantastic bike for a kid just starting. But it is very easy to spot the quality differences. If he gets to the point where he's doing more than popping out of a bowl I will not hesitate to upgrade him. One 180 knocks the rear axle out of position. I do agree, the first thing a parent should do is new grips and new seat tube/seat. But really, major Props to Kink for making a really affordable terrific looking bike. Parents: please pay a little bit more, skip Walmart.

    The rear axle is probably moving because of chipped paint under the bolts. I would remove and wipe down the frame and bolts and reattach pretty tight and it shouldnt move. Same thing if bars are moving is cuz of the paint chipping.

    I remember riding a 45 lbs bike with an American bb, non integrated headset, 7.5 bars, 180mm crank, triple wall rims, a 44t sprocket, 1.95 tires, and that was normal for the late 90s-early 00s, being an older rider I really appreciate how much less bikes weigh, lol

    @@game-r-age7157 man I went through the re-discovery of my bmx days not even a week ago, HAD to find out how the old haro zippo's were going 97/98 with 8 ball sprocket. And discovered that the one I had as a kid was just plain custom from the moment I got it. It came to me in a metallic grey powdercoat, I didn't have the pegs, and it had 2 piece handlebar. The first thing to break on mine was the seat. Didn't even care, took a granny bike seat, raised it to the max because at 16 I was as tall as I'd get. I'd bent spokes... And I don't THINK I broke the frame... But the last I saw of that bike was after(??) a bad crash. Cleared the local 'skatepark's box, found concrete about twice the distance I needed... For some reason. Smashed face and subsequently teeth... And memory. But anyway. Finding a good condition haro zippo now?... The price... Oh my god the price... Don't even try. And then I come to look at more recent bike brands and coming from the haro back in the day to now. Man... The zippo came with a freecoaster, gyro, front brake routed through the fork stem. And cost a few hundred. These days these brands are selling you just the quality of the frame, forks and bars. F all else unless you wanna double the price. Oh.. in Australia that is. Great time to get back in to it... Not. Oh and that accident actually cost more money than my 'more recent' 2 crashes on motorbikes plus the price of my car. PSA: Teeth are fucking expensive. I am sorry and horribly grateful to my parents because I went to the dentist more times than most people's lifetimes over the 6 years after that and I'll be grateful if I never have too again!

It had more wtp parts, but I’d still have swapped the sprocket, forks, and stem and theirs a good bit of those wtp parts off the bike. I had a "mid level" bike years ago as an affordable option to see if returning to BMX wasn't a spur of the moment type thing. For lite duty skatepark riding, it wasn't bad. But I got worried about it's overall durability so ended up selling it and building up a bike with stronger parts. I think those bikes are a good option for new riders, but wouldn't recommend to any experienced rider that the bike will take some abuse.

    @jimbo809824 жыл бұрын

    I started off with a used £50 bike I got off gumtree. I once crashed it into a pole and bent the fork right into the frame. That was a high-ten fork. I still have the frame and rear wheel but it was a hi-ten build with a 42 tooth front sprocket and 15 or 17 back. It had a cassette hub, front-loader clamp and the same style axle as the cheap build shown here. I replaced the forks with Federal Assaults which I still use to this day on a new bike I finally finished off a few months ago now. I did ride that old bike for many miles and eventually I started to pretty much melt the hexagonal axle on the cranks to a cylinder and the pedals would fall off, even with a retention bolt, after a few pedal presses. The rims were awful, unsealed and untrued. It had brakes that pretty much never worked because even after truing the wheels, they would be tacoing again soon enough. But even though it was a heavy bike with no reliability for a harsh fall, it still kept going right to the end and it gave me something to practice BMX on in a way I could at the time. I still have the picture of that thing cruisered to fuck after that crash and I'll always keep it but... I'm very glad I spent the money I did to get a complete custom build. My new BMX build is a Federal DLX 21.5" frame, the last the shop had in the beautiful matte black with Federal Stance XL rims either side keeping the Stance V2 forks but replacing the old caged bearings with integrated ones, much smoother. I use a top load Salt BMX clamp and Cult (fittingly) Cuatro bars. The cranks, Federal Vice 175mm with Federal Command pedals on them. A 25 tooth Federal AMG on the front and 9 tooth motion freecoaster hub, I think a Federal stance on the front. A lot of the bits are Federal because I like the look of their stuff and it's always been awesome stuff. Anyway, my point is, your first bike is always pretty special but it's almost always shit. When you eventually upgrade you find out just how shit it was. There's loads of awesome bits out there and I think BMX is kinda getting to a point where it's pretty much all standard, not true for a lot of the other kinds of bikes like MTB or road bikes. The cost for quality parts is quite big but BMX bikes tend to just not stop. These small differences in the parts I listed seem small to someone who isn't riding them but they do eventually make a big difference in the ways you use or maintain your bike. It took me almost 3 years to build this bike and I'm pretty sure it'll outlast me.

    My first bmx bike was a 2015 kink curb, I bought it used for $50 and it was so messed up, the left bar was bent down a lot, the rear rim had tons of huge dents, the chain was loose and I couldn’t tighten it because the back but was rusted I place, the bottom bracket was so loose it would shake around and the chain would make popping and snapping sounds with literally every pedal stroke and it has tons of other damaged parts. I rode it for 7 months in rain, snow, and sun shine while doing bunny hops and 90’s (couldn’t 180 yet) eventually the super rusted chain broke on one side, I kept riding it for weeks until it surly got slayer hard to pedal and then the chain just snapped. I sold it for $30 for all the parts. I loved that thing.

    I hear as long as you have a FULL chromoly frame and all sealed bearings +integrated headset you should have he basic good parts that will hold up, I like the kink whip and it's $449. other things migh break but I think it might be worth a try unless you're gonna abuse the shit out of it, but even then you can replace some of the cheaper parts when they break. don't take my word on it tho, check some forums and ask around. I like vitalbmx for questions about stuff

    Without being a trick rider, I automatically would prefer the bike on the right because it looks better, and appears to be more of a sturdy platform to my untrained eye. I'm just an 80's baby that grew up in the era of the trippy looking GT, Haro, Hutch, Dyno, Mongoose, plus the other brands you learned to never leave laying around. At 40, I still prefer my 20/21 inch GT over my fixie. In total, I'm in about $1,200 on my bike. It came a bit scantily clad, and needed some extras added to make it look like what I'm used to from back in the day.
