A-2 Leather Flying Jacket Buyers Guide
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Today I'd like to talk about my favorite leather flying jacket of all time, the A-2. It was used by USAAF pilots in World War 2, and it's the sharpest looking jacket ever made. I'd like to show you a few options where you can get decent repros, and also point out a few things to keep in mind before buying one.

You can tell by the design of the A-2 that people in the 40's used to be less overweight.

Thank you, appreciated. It barely scratched the surface, I was just hoping to raise people's interest in these jackets with this high level introduction.
I for one, am pleased that you are a ‘Jacket nerd’ because now we have this great video on the A-2. Thank you.
Thanks for making this video! I am starting to get into the flight jacket hobby & just got my first A2 jacket! I look forward to your future vidoes about the different A2 contracts ;)
Excellent video. I collect repro and modern A-2s/G-1s and have passed down one c. 43 flightjacket horsehide A-2 that was too small to my daughter, who now is the coolest kid in school. Even the one’s that are a little big look great with a hoody underneath when it’s cold out. It’s important to remember that these are blouson-type jackets that will ride higher, which is actually practical. I occasionally use mine when motorcycling
Wow....perfect video. Just nailed it. Everything I wanted to learn. Thanks!
Awesome "primer" on the A-2! Many thanks!

Months and months after this video convinced me to buy a Bill Kelso A-2... and I finally have it! I was inspired by you modeling the jacket so I could actually see how elegant yet badass it looks on a person. Also, the undeniable classic aviator look, especially since many people have probably watched Masters of the Air by now. I decided to get a Rough Wear 23380 in Russet, size 38 Regular, as 38 is my chest measurement and BK recommended that I order according to my chest size as long as I'm ok with it being slightly less comfortable than sizing up. I am so happy I did, it looks so sharp! But it's not uncomfortable at all, it's even less restrictive than a fitted motorcycle jacket. I am really happy with it and would advise anyone who likes the A-2 style to invest in Bill Kelso or another high-end repro maker, yes they are very expensive but you will be so much happier with the quality and fit as opposed to cheaper options, and you'll want to love it considering these jackets will literally last 2+ lifetimes. Some original A-2s are still worn today and if you get a high-end repro yours will last just as long.

Really fantastic video! I love the period music. Like you, I LOVE everything Aviation related and am a huge clothing enthusiast too. Your modeling of BK A-2 jackets has encouraged me to want to buy one because I've never seen A-2s by other brands fit in a way I like. I only wear high rise pants like they did in the 40s so I think an A-2 would work great.

Very interesting and helpful vid as always sir! I’m really enjoying your jacket vids 👍. A couple questions: 1: is there a difference (or preference) between 5star and AviLeather? 2: Do you use any care products on your jackets? (Mink oil, leather conditioner, exe) maybe a good idea for your next vid?
@ReflectedSimulations

Hey, my personal preference between the 2 is AVI. They make better fitting jackets. But if you have a special size, Five stars are more customizeable. No care product is needed nor recommended. Maybe once a year if the leather gets really dry. Then I use Eastman’s Liquid Leather.
Dammit. Always wanted one of these but never knew much about them. Recently been watching HBO's Master's of the Air and since finding this video, I want one again.

As someone who doesn't have a very big budget for a jacket, how good are the Avi Leather repros? I'm aware that for the sake of price I'd probably be losing out on historical accuracy as compared to some of the other ones you showed like Bill Kelso, but since I'm not a re-enactor and not as concerned with 100% accuracy as other people, I think I'd be happy with a jacket that had an authentic enough look and feel while still having good quality materials that can last for a very long time. @@ReflectedSimulations thank you very much for that ! & also idk if you have any suggestions , I’m thinking for my first one buying a used avirex 87-88 bomber jacket , but I notice a lot are in Japan , would you say it’s a good choice for first jacket ?? & the reason why one of those due to some having the painting on the back of the jacket( which I think are pretty neat!)

@@SlasherGuyy1 it’s better to buy a mora accurate repro, say an AVI, then have it painted by someone

@@ReflectedSimulations that is true ! You have a point. The issue is my budget that’s why I asked , sorry should have mentioned that before asking . But for me being in a budget for the rest of the year and I wanted one for fall of this year you think it’s a decent move going for one of those ?? Sorry for all the questions my friend it’s just you have more knowledge in this field 😄
I’ve even slept in mine as well as long sweaty walks( with deodorant of course 🤣). Broke in just great. Eastman is my go to brand.

Best way to break them in :)
As iconic as it is, I just can't get into the elastics, on any type of jacket really. Great video tho

Great video, very informative however I am surprised that you recommended the five star jacket. The leather quality among other things about this jacket is so horribly made..

I didn’t recommend it. I mentioned it as an option. Personally I’d much rather get an AVI in that price range.
Simulated flight jackets to wear while flying simulated warplanes. LOL. There are nice but a little too plain as is. Can you get acceptable patches for them similar to the ones Obama and Trump had on theirs in the video? Or maybe someone could make some kind of flight sim or flight sim server patch or a patch which indicates they achieved a certain grade or level in your Speeds and Angels Campaign. Something along those lines.

There are beautiful patches available, but make sure you choose the right ones. Accurate WW2 patches for WW2 jackets, and correct placement too. Definitely not like those on the 2 POTUS jackets :) It's best if you research about a given unit or pilot and try to replicate a specific jacket.
