I still remember the first time I went there with my Dad. A street vendor asked if he'd like to buy a watch, then pulled up his right sleeve to display about 10 watches from his wrist up to his elbow. Dad passed on the deal and I had a good laugh. The market and the entire area was destroyed the expansion of University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). In the 90s, the Maxwell Street Market was moved by the City of Chicago to accommodate even more expansion of UIC. This all started in the 60s when Mayor Daley ruined the entire near west side and forcefully relocated tons of working class people, many being African Americans into low income project housing so they could build a modern campus for wealthy white people. The modern campus of UIC stands ontop of what used to be a thriving working class neighborhood just west of downtown

I went to Andrew Jackson grammar school (by Sheridan Park) and lived on Racine near Mother Cabrini Hospital (where I was born). My friend's dad sold produce on Maxwell St. in the mid- '60s. We would go with him in his large truck and help set up. He paid some "block guy" for the spot. We would go most of the summer. I never remember any fine artwork being sold there at all, but I do remember the musicians and the guys walking around with watches on the inside of their suit coats. It was wild.
