Yeah, you see them going up into the air (and coming in to land), and you think "how the F*** did you get up there"... So ungainly, and with that big inverted-looking tail...!! One hell of an aircraft though! See them regularly coming into RAF Mildenhall, and sometimes into RAF Lakenheath as well - I live local to these bases, and work on Lakenheath in the BX, so get to see a lot of these comings and goings!! 😉 When we had A10's here about 10-15 years ago, it was amazing! That whine sound they make when flying is uncanny; I saw one or two just change direction on-a-dime about 100 feet above the base, and they just looked like they were were tumbling in the air, and the noise was not much more than a 'dust-buster' (portable battery powered hoover!)... it seemed very spooky to witness. It was almost unreal, ethereal , but then they went off on whatever the new course heading was, and...... Gone!! Incredible! 😮 But yeah, the C-17 is almighty beast too - gracefully ungainly, is how I'd describe it when I see it, but it's captivating to see!! 😁

I did the math. A KC135 holds 200,000 lbs of off-loadable fuel. The A-10 holds 11,000 lbs of fuel. So each KC135 can refuel 18 A-10s. Or 10 A-10s twice. So 2 KC135s can refuel that whole fleet if they are all flying to the USA or Canada from Scotland. The A-10 has a ferry range of 2,240 nmi (2,580 mi, 4,150 km). I am not sure if that belly tank is part of the standard fuel load or extra. It looks like it hold a lot of fuel. A few weeks ago I got curious about how short legged airplanes can get delivered from the USA to Europe or Asia. In some cases they can add temporary fuel tanks to 737s and other small airliners. They can also stop for gas in the Azores, Bermuda, Iceland, Midway Island, Hawaii, Anchorage, etc. In 1981 I flew from SFO to Shannon. We stopped for fuel in Bangor. 20+ years later I flew from SFO to LHR. No stopping anymore.

  • @LewisMacdonaldMedia

Fantastic insight thanks Michael. These aircraft stopped in Iceland for overnight stay and crew rest before hopping the sea to USA. It's a Learjet 35A, C-21 in USAF parlance. We used to lease them from Learjet and there were 3 stationed at Yokota Air Base near Tokyo. They were used primarily for VIP transport but were easily configured to Aero-medical evacuation. The Learjet 35A is well known as a "hot rod in the sky" and many USAF pilots loved them. The C-21s at Yokota were replaced by the twin turboprop Beechcraft C-12. There are still some C-21s flying out of Scott AFB (Illinois).

Maybe if George W Bush & Donald trump didn't throw away trillions of $$$ on tax cuts for the rich you could have medicines, education & food. In fact the pharmaceutical companies agreed to lower the priced they charged for medicine in America only for Donald trump to have a temper tantrum and throw it all away

Sometimes in order to get the medicines and food etc you need A 10s to protect your country from all those who would take them from you.
