Fantastic interview and a focus that so many forget which is to enjoy sailing and keep it as simple as possible. For us older folks we remember life before all the electronics, pressurized water and so on. Not saying I don't have fancy stuff but the more fancy stuff the more problems maintaining it and the more reliant you become. Just watched a video where the electronics kept the motor from starting. My old diesel was recently rebuilt and no electronics. If it turns over and has fuel it will start. Most systems on my boat are exactly that simple.

That's a beautiful boat he's got there. I use a Simrad tiller pilot on my Precision 23. It's nearly indispensable for raising and lowering sails when singlehanding. I've used just a tiller tamer before but it's very difficult to keep the boat in irons without the tiller pilot. Especially when your halyards aren't led to the cockpit. So agree with Walter on that. Also agree on the pleasure of singlehanded sailing a small keelboat. It's the most relaxing thing I've ever done and makes you feel at one with nature. I do like a French press, though.😅

Marina water is fine if you're getting it from a building. Getting it from the hose spigot on the dock is going to be different marina to marina. I've personally never gotten sick from drinking from any of my boat tanks and those included some 50+ year old fiberglass tanks. That being said I sanitize my tanks yearly with Chlorine Dioxide that sanitizes both the liquid part of the tank and the head space of the tank. Its great to see Walter and that's a heck of a nice boat for $10k. That propane stove solution is a bit sketchy though, a 1lb propane canister is very close the thermal equivalent of a stick of dynamite. I'd have looked of an Origo non pressure alcohol stove, but we all have our own risk tolerances. As always a great video Randy!

Walter Schultz...if you ever get the notion to take a flight to Halifax to do some sailing look me up. We are like minded. I've been solo for years on a C&C 30. Everything you said is correct. I go sailing in the morning when the sea breeze comes in...5 or 6 miles out on the Atlantic then sail, or surf her home, depending;). 20 nm away ...might a well be in Antarctica, the only sign of civilization are jet contrails...no traffic, no sirens, no other boats, no houses,....the hole in the heart.. Yup, that was me too. If I dont have 50000nm I don't have one. On the go almost everyday since 1999. Some days my day sail might be 30 to 40 nm. Other days around 15 nm...some days turn into beauties, some go for shit...but too many lose sailing days because of a cutie in a skirt giving the forecast. It's a perfect day when we get off the dock and every day missed is a day missed.

Once he mounts those winches, it will not be an issue. Those dingdang cam cleats, that are a huge hassle to let go, will become a distant memory. Personally, I would go single whip on the backstays, but if he decides to keep the purchase that's ok too. The winches will work either way. I guess those are rigged with Marconi mains too (that's the only version on sailboatdata), but I would be afraid of it not balancing as well without the gaff. Not to mention the light air bonus the gaff main offers. Thank you Graham

I'm guessing that he's self-insuring the boat and just operates with basic liability coverage. That's the beauty of the $13K boat.

Say Randay, Can't doubt the wisdom of Walter Schulz, but - isn't that small propane bottle in a non-vented cabinet a little sketchy? If you can live with a small propane bottle, I could see putting it in a small, not much larger container vented with flexible hoses - even a plastic jug with a sealed wide mouth lid - so long as it vented out and overboard. But just placed in a locker, sharing I assume bilge access does not seem right. Can you ask Walter about that? Thanks

Coleman stove, bottle attached, AKA delivery skipper's best friend. Fits right on top of whatever fire hazard is sitting there not working. MUCH safer.
