9mm VS 5.7x28 Penetration Test! FMJ VS Hollow Point

Ойын-сауық

9mm vs 5.7x28 penetration test. If you want to see how the 5.7x28 compares to the 9mm then this video is for you. Its pretty which bullet is going to perform better, but I wanted to know how much better. So I shot these paper plates with 9mm fmj and 9mm hollow point to compare those, and then shot it with the 5.7x28 with the Ruger 57 to see how much deeper those bullets penetrate. Let me know if you liked this video and dont forget to subscribe.
all of this took place on a shooting range in a controlled environment.

The hollow point didnt expand because the paper filled it up making it a full metal jacket. There was also no soft tissue or gel to fill the hollow point and the paper was too dense blocking the sides from opening.

  • @marcusclarkson2657

Less to do with density and more compressibility. Hollows expand in fluid ( people ) more because the water does not compress while the dry materials will fill the cavity and compress.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing he should have tried some like Hornady critical duty or Hornady critical defense the critical duty has a little bit more penetrating power it's like a plus p ammo and then the critical defense doesn't penetrate as well but it does expand but they made those hollow points not to get all filled up with crap so they expand when they're supposed to

That was really interesting. I thought the FMJ would have penetrated much further than the hollow point too. I s'pose the paper just doesn't cause the same level of expansion like a fleshy type target would (like ballistic gel). Oh, and while I'm thinking about it, I saw your comment on DemoRanch about the 100lb rubber band ball. Any news? And one more thing. My BF has been subscribed to your channel for a long time and really enjoys your videos. His birthday is coming up and after I watched (he's at work) this I thought to myself that getting that 5.7x28 round (his fav pistol caliber) you fired through the plates and then me putting it on a necklace as a B-Day present for him would be awesome! He would totally love it. I'm going to try my best to keep him from seeing this as he usually doesn't read through comments unless he himself makes one. Keep up the great videos and thank you in advance for reading and considering. 🙂

Might have seen a difference in the 9mm's out of a longer barrel and more distance between The gun and the target. There was a lot of gunpowder on the 1st plate, Which might have had a chance to burn up in a longer barrel. The distance between the end of the barrel and the target will change both bullets speeds by the time they hit. Good work though, The more videos showing the efficacy of 5.7 In comparison to 9mm will get more people into the round, and drive the price of ammo down. My edc is the same ruger, except I am running a tlr-1.

On the other hand Michael, it would also be very different with the 5,7 x 28 shot from a P90, wouldn't it. All these tests combine aspect of gun, barrel length, and round to produce a "result". But, after doing such tests, what was the conclusion? Surely, if you set out to design a series of tests like this what are you testing? What is the hypothesis, and what is the conclusion in terms of that hypothesis? A test for the sake of doing a test is not worth much more than some KZreadr having some fun out on a range somewhere. To be in any way useful, it must have a purpose! I'm not seeing that purpose.

Thing is about the 5-7 is the tumbling effect when it hits human flash it tumbles like the 556 it rips a devastating wound and you can't stop the bleeding it doesn't have the knockdown power but it definitely has the killing power second thing about the 556 is a pistol like the PSA Rock that's 23 rounds it shoots really flat there's no recoil to speak of it's like shooting a 22 which makes a follow-up shots extremely easy and quick the only problem is it's expensive maybe not as quite as expensive as my 45 Long Colt but it's pretty close but as a carry weapon they're relatively thin for a full size gun they feel good in the hand if you like a full size carry it's 23 rounds and if you do have to shoot somebody you're going to hit them like 10 times and still have ammo left over without reloading 🤷‍♂️ people are like what is the 5.7I have a lot of people ask me that question in the easiest explanation I have for that is it's a 556 short it is the difference between a 9 mm and a 380 but I can carry it in a pistol if they made a 5.56 and a pistol I'd carry that thing but it would be huge😂

Not 2300 you're reading the speed for a 10.5 inch barrel in a pistol it loses 300-500 fps so 2000 fps and yeah 9mm can penetrate more in living tissue because it has more weight and actually punches through while the 5.7 just smacks into the tissue faster and losing momentum fast due to light weight

Have you seen any 5.7 ballistics gel test ever? Most rounds won't even meet the FBI MINIMUM penetration requirements. Many much slower rounds will meet the FBI 12 - 18 inch standard. Velocity isn't everything. For example, 9mm definitely penetrates water deeper than .223/5.56.

not really. This is really a sort of barrier-testing comparison. Not tissue damage. The 5.7 beats 9mm in that. Also, in tissue or gel, the 9mm actually will over penetrate more than something like v-max 40gr which has massive energy dump to create damage (lethal). Easier to shoot in terms of recoil and follow-up shots. Higher capacity & lighter. 9mm is better suited for barrels 4" and under for those compact & sub options.

to each their own, but may want to gather some more info on that stance. Lighter recoil, higher round capacity, and more tissue damage with actually less (over) penetration - still sufficient - just not over penetrate with something like the FN 40gr v-max blue tip. So it's better at penetrating barriers (like much body-armor or paper plates), and better at creating damage, and better at staying in tissue with massive energy-dump & easier to shoot for faster follow up shots. Right, 9mm for defense.

One factor that 9mm wins, hands-down, is the sub-compact & shorter barrel options. So when it comes to carrying concealed in a barrel in the 3" range, yes 9mm all the way. The 5.7 will print far more. But if I am walking the dog around my area at night and the threat javalinas bring...it's the 5.7 every time.

@@johnryan6658 that depends on whether a person is smart enough to seek out proper loads - or is resourceful enough to load their own. If one is only going to use the "FBI influenced" rounds being put out by Fiocchi that are clearly being weakened (due to how dramatically effective the cartridge really is and is why they restrict or pull factory ammo that works), then they will likely find difficulty getting desired terminal effect. Since our lovely exchanges last year or whenever, I've done over 50 gel tests myself in 5.7. The caliber works. I could easily sit & type out a list of loads that demonstrate counter to your claim, but neh. They're scattered throughout my playlist.

The 5.7 out of a handgun is DOES NOT go through body armor unless you can find the SS190 5.7 round which is banned otherwise it is no better than any other round. 9mm doesn’t penetrate body armor. The 5.7 does, the 5.7 has 30% less recoil than the 9mm and 5.7 handguns carry more rounds 20 or more depending on the handgun. The 5.7 shoots flatter and is more accurate at distance. The 5.7 round was developed to outperform the 9mm, and it does except for 1 thing, Cost.

No… the 5.7 was designed to urban warfare. It made to fragment and be non-lethal after passing threw the first object. The point was so it would not over penetrate and kill someone in the next apartment pr exit a body and kill the person behind them. NATO just adopted the round and the secrete service wanted to carry it but the cost of training and weapon Chang rover was very high. You sound like a typical person that has never shot one, lots of options with no info. You may want to do some reading on it. By the way.. you should always look beyond your target regardless of what you have. Also standard ss197 ammo is accurate at 200m, has very low recoil and standard 20 round mags.
