    If you're interested in penetration results, then the 357 sig is your cartridge. Otherwise, the others do exactly what they are made to do. In my opinion, the sig is a boutique cartridge sandwiched between. 40S&W and 10mm. It is impressive with regard to velocity and penetration.

    357 sig penetration rivals 10 mm. If you want something more powerful than 9mm, 40sw, and 45 but dont want to lug around a 10 mm, 357 sig is the way to go..

  • @rgalletta58

    @rgalletta58

    @Rodney I'm in agreement with regard to .357 Sig. Looking at it subjectively, I think the most significant advantage over 10mm is case size relative to pistol size. It's an impressive 9mm magnum cartridge for an autoloader, and I believe there's a place for it in the pistol world. I use 10mm for woods carry, so I really don't have a place for .357 Sig. I'm content with other calibers for everyday carry.

    Just an FYI regarding supposed excessive wear, it's nothing to worry about. I have put over 3K rounds through my 357 Sig EDC at velocities above 2,000 fps and have yet to have any issues whatsoever. If you look at the SAAMI transducer calibration charts, you'll see that the 357 Sig is rated up to 45,000 psi. That's 5K above the listed maximum SAAMI cartridge pressure.

    Just a thought. Have you considered testing a TMJ total metal jacket round with it's thin copper shell that flattens out much easier than FMJ when it hits something similar to flesh and bone. I am thinking this TMJ round flatting out slightly when hitting flesh would be superior to full wad cutters and hard cast type rounds against dangerous game such boar and bear. Of course you would want to use a caliber such as 357 Sig or 10mm which have enough velocity to be effective.

  • @jamessellers6276

    I’d like to see the same test done with a G35 and G24 both with good aftermarket 357 Sig barrels. (KKM or Alpha Wolf) And with the same Ranger T ammunition. See what that extra barrel length does for the 40 and 357. Also which at it swap barrels on the G26 and G32. It would be a pretty comprehensive test of the Ranger T in those calibers and bullet weights.

    Great test & comparison. I agree with you about the "spicier" 9mm. If it were lighter and faster it would surely have had a more dynamic and dramatic impact and wound(channel). However, the 9 did perform. It did properly expand and it definitely penetrated well. It's heavy for caliber weight having the lower velocity producing less energy puts it at a bit of a disadvantage on the observable damage. But it would surely be effective if put in the correct place. The 357 is the most impressive in most every category but overall bullet expansion diameter which is the 40. All are good choices based on these results. Thanks a bundle.

    is your gel calibrated and correct temperature! the warmer the gel & celebration variances affect results. Also I fully understand the several layers of T-shirt that is pretty much a standard clothing layer for AZ but to add validity to your test and make it more relevant to real life scenarios for most of the country, you should probably use the heavy clothing protocol at least ... thanks for your time and effort.

    Absolute proof that the FBI is lying to you about 9mmm doing the same damage as 40 Smith 357 Sig 45 and all that bullshit they try and convince you about why they went to 9 m m, because they don't want to take the time to teach people how to shoot real calibers. I own a single 9 mm and I don't carry it without really warm 115 or 120 for grain ammo. And it's got a four and a half inch barrel. I've been teaching shooting since 1970 and is much better as 9 mm is today I still am very weary when I use it as my carry gun. The reason they up sell the magazine capacity is because you're going to need every one of those freaking rounds.

    What your test shows is that while the 9mm, the .40, and the .357 SIG are all acceptable defense cartridges that will get the job done, it is not correct to say they are "all the same" as many do. Clearly the .40 and the .357 provide superior performance in terms of pure ballistics, but it is up to the individual shooter to decide if the cost of that performance is worth it in terms of recoil, weapon wear, and ammunition cost and availability. The two more powerful cartridges are likely to require more frequent practice as well. In my opinion, the 9mm is the logical choice in a compact firearm, while the .40 and .357 are at their best in a duty size gun. I think they all have their place.

    Just get a g23. Get 9mm and 357 sig conversion barrels both share same suppressor size. The ultimate gun for all 3 calibers in one . G23 size is more than enough to handle 40 and 357 while much more concealable.

  • @PPISAFETY

    @PPISAFETY

    @@rodneyh1947 You're probably right. Although when I was a PD armorer I saw some pretty significant .40 caliber wear, more so than in 9mm, on our G22 issue sidearms. But that was just wear, not parts failure or anything like that. I own both a full-sized M&P and a SIG P226 now that are set up to shoot all three calibers, and don't see much in the way of wear with any of them. Having all three options came in handy in the recent ammo shortage. My Glock 19 is my daily carry gun, so I do like that size pistol. I use a .40 as my home defense gun, because if I'm going to be stuck with no retreat, I'd rather have 15 or so rounds of .40 on tap. At the least that should get me to my shotgun, lol. As for the .357 SIG, I shoot that one for the fun of it, and only outdoors because it is so damned noisy. Cheers!
