I can definitely see that being the case. Same as something like a Miata vs a Corvette having a different line and approach to a fast lap. Being very oriented to Corvette, the Porsche felt unnatural (991.2 that is), but the 992 had much more familiar dynamics to how my Z06 feels (based on its mods and setup). I was far, far more comfortable pushing the 992 vs the 991. The 991 just had that old era 911 feel where it needed to be learned to be pushed properly. Between the 991 extreme rear weight bias, narrower front track, power delivery and macpherson front end...it's just a very different experience to anything else I've driven. The double wishbone front of the 992 seemed to make the car feel much more familiar.

Damian, it was really interesting for me as a longtime Porsche 911 owner, who drives 911's both as my daily and on track, to hear your perspective on the 2 generations, as well as Corvette. The 911 is very competitive on track, but as a rear engine car with 60+% of it's weight behind the rear axle, it requires a different approach to turns. If I had a little time with you behind the wheel, you would no doubt quickly learn how the previous 911's need to be driven and would become very comfortable and fast - they are incredible machines on track, and do not push if driven the way they need! Incidentally I too have driven both of those GT3's and ironically, I started off setting the 992 up for turns the way all 911's have always required. It took me a few laps to realize that the 992 with its first-ever for a 911, double wishbone suspension, can actually be driven very differently than any 911 before. After a couple laps JT told me to just turn and trust it. He was of course right. What a crazy thing to experience in a 911! Maybe next time I'm out there you can run a C7 and I'll run the 991.2 GT3 and we'll see how they compare with drivers that are familiar with their particular handling characteristics. Great job on the video and shout out to JT and the team, they are the best!

I appreciate the comment and agree with you for sure. This video wasnt to show the cars max capability or even the time difference as it shows. I wanted it to express how approachable the car is, in non ideal, yet real world conditions. Some cars can be commended for being easily approachable and easily out to a limit while some cars have a learning curve. Some can be just as fast and just as great, but they require a lot more seat time. In the video, I think what stopd out most was the 992 is an easy car to get in, and not feel threatened or surprised...its very well packaged and built and for that reason its "better". A 930 turbo though, would be far worse than both, yet that has its rewards, when learned. In the end, its about ease or approachable performance. Thanks a bunch for watching and your feedback, and hopefully there are more ahead!

For sure the 992 is inspiring more confidence as it enables it to use a greater proportion of available performance as the front strut suspension of the 991.2 is more finicky and has greater dynamic camber which robs confidence. It definitely takes more skill to exploit the 991.2 but the differences for higher level drivers won't be that stark. E.g on equivalent tires on the Nurburgring, the 991.2 vs the 992 GT3 are really only about 7 seconds apart over 13 miles and that's about half second per lap. On a tighter more technical track like this a highly skilled driver would be within 1 sec apart between the cars. But for amateur drivers, they'll be able to exploit more of the performance of the 992 earlier on with less training.

Well, this was indeed a cold day, and without many other factors in place, its hard to say what the true end outcome would be. The few I spoke with there, said they can get within about 2.5 seconds of the 992, in the 991. One has to consider approachability, though. Coming into a car cold, and with no prior seat time says a lot about a cars dynamics. Nothing wrong with something that has to be learned but being able to take a car to the limit more quickly says a lot about the chassis development and tuning. Theyre both fast but the 992 is well ahead.

@@KnightDriveTV Agree, Porsche did a great job here to make the car super approachable...911s are NOT easy to drive fast. There was also a SportAuto comparison with pro driver between 911R and 992 touring (really two generations apart) and again 1.5 secs on hockenheim GP and result was the same thing about ~.5 secs per lap on equivalent tires..and since both have minimal aero, you can really isolate the true benefits of the double-wishbone and suspension improvements.

I'm guessing people are comparing these cars assuming that both cars have factory alignment settings. However I'm wondering if this Co. likes to keep the 991.2 on the STD alignment settings to highlight the better feeling & possible more $$$ to rent 992's better feel? As I understand in the 991.2 has a much more street friendly alignment and benefits much more on a track with a performance alignment.@@ziggyfreud5357

It pains me plenty as well, believe me. Not to say that reward and enjoyment cant be extracted from the earlier suspension cars, but there is no question double wishbone is BLATANTLY noticeable. It elevates the car to an immediate next level. I'm sure early car owners will defend that it take "knowledge and skill) to extract from the early cars because yes, you were driving around its weakness, in order to make it go fast. The 992 is a game changer for sure

Have read all the comments. Essentially the GT3 isn't a car that you can get into and be fast immediately. It has very nuanced driving characteristics. The 991 requires considerable experience to get the very best out of it. Is quite counterintuitive in many ways. Understeer can be cured with a big dollop front negative camber, seriously hard trail braking to the apex and a big set of testicles. Getting on the power super early and feeling that thing hunker down and shoot down the next straight is exhilarating. Would lead to snap oversteer in most other cars.

Thats all certainly true, and running a car for 5 laps or 7 laps has an advantage of rapidly telling you a lot about the car, in some ways. The fact is, the 992 is big step forward. The 991 is still plenty capable, but Porches job was to step forward, and there is no question they did that. Driving the two back to back like this, with no prior seat.time...the 992 is by far the car to own, if you can own it. Thats not to say the 991's arent to be appreciated and dont also have some of their own unique desires but...end of day...the 992 is the better, faster car

Like BMW MPower points out, the newer car arrived equipped with stickier tires, which account for perhaps half the lap time difference. These cost 1k a set from what I've read, and likely won't last you a lapping weekend. Track days have become very expensive. My 2018 GT3 hasn't been to a track - been there, done a lot of that, in a prior Porsche (still owned and loved). The GT3 is supposed to be at home, both on street and track. Perhaps it was inevitable that the track focus would slowly dominate, but I had hoped the RS would stake out the track landscape, allowing the GT3 to remain road-friendly. Porsche makes hard decisions. Reviews of the new car's road manners have not been kind (skittish steering, harsh suspension). My dealer called, my allocation popped up. Equipped the way I would like, old car sold at a good price, taxes etc, the new car would chew through 50k of savings. If track days were still my thing, not sure I'd pull that trigger. Minus the track, no brainer. BTW, I like the older styling and cockpit considerably more, but that's purely a matter of taste. Fun to see a skilled, non-911 guy jump into a 911 and quickly sense the dynamics. The weight distribution is all wrong - and all right! Memories of double apexes are among my most treasured.

  • @KnightDriveTV

Yes, I've heard the street manners of the new car arent as good and as with many details and cars especially, its all a set of compromises. I'd love to experience the cars, coming out of the garage, driving around and to the store...it would speak volumes for sure. In this, I can only say I favor the 992 solely because it did this particular task better...go around the track. I think either interior was fine, either styling is something to be proud of. For me, not being a Porsche fanboy, I found them both fun, both impressive and frankly only able to criticized when comparing them to each other. I intend to do the GT3RS and GT2RS next and I'm sure my Porsche buddies I've gained with this video (sarcasm) will just love that.

Dont need helmets...more dangerous in some ways to have a helmet on and no other safety equipment. This track has a lot of runoff, in addition to being all new model cars. The racecars they have there (GT3, Lambo Supertrofeo, etc) all require helmet use.

I never agreed, nor did many people, with the helmets. People wearing large helmets with no hans device is more dangerous, in my opinion and the opinion of many. Dream Racings location has large overruns and an off will simply put you in gravel and arrest the cars momentum. Exotic/Speed Vegas (combined entities) also has had a death in a car at their facility vs Dream Racing has never had an injury. This is just a fact I will point out. Up to you to decide. Dream Racing does have racecars which require helmets, as you also have a cage in place and other supplemental safety equipment. In modern performance cars...I just dont feel helmets make sense on what is a very safe track with large runoffs

I will say, a 991.2 is going to, of course, be a rewarding car depending on how you use it. For a street car, or avg recreational use, I'd imagine its a bit of a wash. Put them on the track though, the difference isnt subtle...its QUITE obvious...I felt the difference before even getting out of the pitlane, it was that obvious. The 992 makes real power to the end as well, despite similar horsepower, it feels a lot more full theough the rev range. Undoubtedly though, that front end defines what the car shouldve had for decades. Truly...the 992 is going to be a divide for watercooled Porsches...its a big step up imo. I'm no Porsche expert, but I have driven my fair share...the 992 was very, very impressive. Last weekend I talked to a guy that was driving a 992 GT3 RS...what a machine. Weisach package, maxed out spec, etc. He has a 2019 cup car and has had many 991.1 and .2's. He was like...the 992 is another level of car. He does a LOT of track days and said the 992 RS gets it done with ease compared to his 991.2...his comments very much mirrored my impressions. So, yeah...I think its worth it...I hate to say it.

Not true at all. The 991 is not nearly as confident and its going to be a car that will take time to extract lap times from. It can get there, but you heard from the lead instructor himself, they 992's chopped seconds off and you can immediately feel the difference, when driven back to back.
