I sometines play father figure for my late cousins 17 yr daughter, I am slammed in life day and night for probably next month. When she said she needed me to wrench today I was asked what. She said thermo so at worst I figured hour and half, which I know better. And she brings me this delight. Thanks for the video. I dont even bother too look what i got coming i always just skimming google and KZread and know almost everything going to give me a headache much faster than coming across ot myself

yes there are lot of cars that have the same set up. there are some variations as far as like some cars you may need to take off few extra things to get to it. but overall majority of it is the same

The way i do that i take of the carburator. That is the easy way for very easy is more easy when you put the new one back u got plenty space for work i will do a video to show u how i do that

Motorsport Factory - I decided to remove the throttle body to remove the thermostat for a superflush, which was much easier than I thought, and it made the job quicker and way less tedious for me, plus those two mini coolant hoses and metal tube that allow the coolant to heat up the throttle body were so badly blocked that I had to use a drill bit held by vise-grip pliers to dig it out by hand, then finish it off with a pipe cleaner. It felt great to find that & clean it, because it’ll make the engine idle smoother after startup on cold, rainy mornings. I really recommend checking & cleaning out that little throttle heater tube when changing out the thermostat. Throttle body removal is probably the routine procedure so that’s probably why the little hoses had RTV on them - to not have to add to the cost by replacing those hoses. Mine had RTV on them too. I noticed that one of the small hoses leaks a little bit even when clamped, which was ok during the flush, but it’ll have to not leak when the job’s all done. I’m about to put in the new thermostat tonight so I’ll probably put some RTV on them & top it off with coolant tomorrow after it’s set.

@@Bikewithlove hey thats good to know. yeah its always a good idea to replace any little coolant hoses you can access. so you are not doing the work twice or having to redo something etc. yeah in some case the throttle body removed makes the job easier.

Motorsport Factory - Agreed. I just replaced the thermostat & water pump, but I decided to hold off on the radiator for a few days to take a break. Even with the right tools, it’s quite a bit of time & effort. Plus, the learning curve can really slow things down because you never know what you’re going to find in there. It can be a real can of worms. You’re right- I just ordered the replacement hoses for the throttle so when I drain the system for the radiator replacement I’ll get that too.

@@Bikewithlove yeah there is always a learning curve. even the ive done the same service on the same car many times. i am always trying to find ways to work more effeciently and get it done faster

I lost my bolt on the carburetor and my gaskets bad. Any idea where I can find one? Everytime I look it up shows me a different gasket

yeah you would think it would be hard with it in the way. also if you feel you need to take the throttle body off go ahead and do so. some cases you may need to do that . so cars with this engine have sometimes a bracket that needs to be removed but its case by case senario

Whenever you use line wrenchs for metal lines always try to tighten them first before loosing them, if it moves even a little its usally enough that it breaks rust and corrosion free without moving the line, then it should break free loosing it.

yeah i know i didnt do all that do to the fact the car came in with no coolant at all so i just went straight for the job. i will in a future video show how to do all that

Hose clamp the hose coming from the radiator and there is no need to drain the coolant. You will lose a little but it works. I actually took the throttle body off to access the bottom bolt easier. It gave me the chance to spray out the throttle body and clean it and also check the gasket for the throttle body. Good video but really short. It takes about 4 hours if you take the Throttle body off. You also have to take the Cruise and Throtte cables disconnect but it beats buying a $30 wrench and it also checks the other components on the car/van. Different ways by different mechanics. It works great for me but to each their own.

I got all the way to that bottom bolt, and it wouldn't let go! I tried penetrating oil and everything. I just couldn't get the leverage. I moved more stuff out of the way than you did, and still couldn't get it loose. Its a 3100 in a 95 Lumina. Not too many differences. I can tell by you're vid, its in the same place, underneath the throttle assembly. This sucks, but imma get it!

its tough at first but when you get it you get it. that bolt shouldnt be that tight in the first place

yeah this thermostat is a bit of a pain to work with. it would have been nicer if they positioned the thermostat or the exhaust was few inches further out would have helped

Right. Wish they would of kept it all straight instead of sideways. Need to demote the engineer(s). Never understood the reason... along with front wheel drive. da fools.

FYI if you are doing this job Horizon Tool # CAL751 makes this a ton easier than this. If you Google "GM Thermostat Wrench" they are easy to find for under $20.

yes this car was overheating. its had not coolant at all either. so i didnt notice overflowing. what issues are you having

It's a lot easier when you remove the throttle body just be careful that you don't tear the gasket or just buy one in case it tears it don't cost that much. Auto shops here where I live get anywhere from $213.00-$272.00 plus tax

Motorsport Factory I've only done two of these type of t-stats one on my grand prix and another while I worked at an autoshop a guy I worked with has a double box end wrench that's a half moon shape it works great for this job

yes its simple. i didnt go over it in this video though.... just leave the cap open on the expansion tank and turn the climate all the way to hot but leave the fans off... and run it till you get all the bubbles out

in some cases yes . each model i have worked on ... not just the mailbu with this same engine had different brackets, pipes, hoses etc so i hat to take the throttle body off. in this case i felt i didnt need to . but if it does make it easier for you .. go for it

Oh my gosh! that's looks like all a pain in the butt to get to the thermostat! I have to do that to mine soon bcus my 2000 been overheating. the coolant fluid been disappearing/evaporating for awhile now so need to do this. but thanks for letting me see what I have to deal with soon. man, just need a new car. :(

yes it is a pian. but once you ggot the technique down it gets easier . the hardest part was the bottom bolt on the thermostat housig

One thing that they don't tell you when you are taking the bolt off the bottom....use a freaking close wrench that has an off set it worked better than what every video that I have seen and you can do everything from the top. Also do not remove the bottom bolt the thermostat housing has a slot in it. Now it is a pain in the azz to put it back on.

the things to look for is checking the radiator,check all hoses,thermostat. if you havent replaced the thermostat in a long time it could need changing,also it could be low on coolant too

yeah tell me bout it. i just dont understand why they had to make it this way. i seen some impalas where you like take it out from the top and in 2 minutes your done .

why did this take me 7 hours to do this. i mean i understand that bolt was inaccessible but jesus christ. it REALLY sucks, (I HAD TO GET A CURVED WRENCH TO LOOSEN THE LOWER NUT. once it was done it felt awsome doing something for 30$ (tax) instead of something like 150-400 FYI my malibu is the base model, it is the exact same layout, 245k miles and still going strong think the thermostat was OEM, looks like uncle tried to put the fix a leak shit (the crap they sell at walmart, so now i have to figure out how to flush the system)

it shouldnt have took you 7 hours to do. but in order to flush out the fix a leak you will have to flush the cooling system a few times to get most of it out

I've done a few of these and all i can say is what a horrible design by GM. I don't think the engineers gave it much thought. Fortunate to do it in warm weather. Good job all the same.

Very thorough, however all the movement of the camera was making me dizzy! maybe have someone else hold the camera while you are doing it! Blow your nose!

Poor design, I took the throttle body off much easier to get the bolts off.. Plus you can give your throttle body a good cleaning while it's off.... Lol Wait until you have to change the 3 spark plugs on the firewall side especially when the spark plugs booths are stuck on.... not fun...

yes i dont like the design either. i did it without having to do take throttle body out on this car. but for the saturn relay you have to take the trottle body off cuz of the bracket design on it. i have not done spark plugs on this but i take its not fun on this either

Especially when your plugs are on the bottom of the engine block and have stuck on boots with plugs that look like little “cone heads”

how do you remove the 2-13 mm bolts, you went away and when you comeback, the 2 bolts were already removed, I WANT TO KNOW how to reach those 2 bolts,1 is a little easy, but the other one sucks, not good video
