Thanks for posting this vid I just recently learned that my 2000 ES 300 had a cabin air filter this was a huge help in replacing it. The old one was at least 10 years old if not 17. I inherited this Platinum Edition when my Mom passed away and plan to keep it for as long as I live.

Paul, i'm sorry about your Mom...That said, the 2000 ES 300 is a fantastic car to keep the rest of your life. I love the sound system and driving in the fall with the moonroof open ..The stock setup is the best..My was totalled out 3 years ago..took a full year to restore it..taking it to various shops..Salvage tile but I love the car.I just cleaned the cabin air filter using this Video..I'm the 2nd owner..It's never been changed!! filthy

One tip is to only pull the floor mat/cover back far enough to get it past the gas pedal, push the pedal down, and roll the mat back against it a bit so it holds it down for you and frees up your hand.

Thanks a ton for this video! I took my nasty cabin filter out last night (original from 1999 / bought the car used from an older couple with only 50K miles). I took photos of it... totally clogged with bugs and particulates. I recently changed all 6 spark plugs without having to remove anything for the back 3. I'll make a video next time they need to be changed out. Just takes a little hand contortion and patience.

330k on a '98, that's fantastic! I'm at 290k on the same model year. How is yours holding up? I got some driveline vibration that started 50k miles ago, possibly from the transmission. Still shifts well and cruises smoothly. Everything else is in tip top shape aside from scrapes, dings, dents, rock chips, etc. Regarding your filter, I really hope your slot is empty, otherwise you probably would've noticed it by now. I had a strong allergic reaction the first Spring season that I had the car - came from mildew or something in the HVAC. Sprayed some cleaner in the vents, vacuumed the slot, and installed a new filter. Ever since then, no more allergic reactions.

Thanks for this very well done video! 2 questions: did you have your drivers seat redone? Mine is toast, it’s ripped and cracked. Second question- what model rims and tires are on your Lexus? Did you need to use spacers to make them work or were they bolt ons as is? Thanks again!

  • @hayksamvelyan

    @hayksamvelyan

    5 жыл бұрын

Driver seat is original. I know what you mean though, I’ve been applying a leather cleaner/conditioner(Lexol) once to twice a year and it’s definitely helped a lot. I’ve had the car for the last 7 years and luckily the first few owners kept the interior in good shape. The wheels are from a 2005 Lexus GS300 17”. No spacers. Tires were 215/55/17 if I remember correctly. You can use an online tire calculator to get the same tire circumference as the stock setup. I just recently switched over to Toyota Avalon 16” wheels from the early 2000s. The same wheels were featured on the Platinum edition Lexus ES from 2000-2001. I prefer the 16s as the tire has enough sidewall to give you a soft and compliant ride while still giving a nice stance to the car. The GS300 wheels were awesome to look at but had too many side effects I didn’t like: total weight per corner, heavier steering, uneven tire wear, firmer ride, higher chance of bending a rim.

The EGR is the cast iron pipe assembly that's bolted to the Intake near the throttle body. Follow the small vacuum hose that feed off of the EGR valve to find the EGR VSV aka Vacuum Solenoid. You will find a whole Valve Set of VSVs for the EGR, EVAP, and the ACIS with multiple vacuum lines and connectors. The EGR VSV will have a dark orange electrical connector that's closer to the windshield and closer to the EGR Valve assembly.

I just spent over an hour trying to get the filters in. I got them out, but trying to get them into my 2001 Lexus 300 ES. After about 20 minutes I finally got the top filter in. Pushed it all the ways up and attempted to get the bottom filter in. No luck at all. I held the brake peddle as instructed. No matter how many tries to get this on the track and into the slot was impossible to say the least. I am so frustrated. Wish I didn't start this project. You make it look easy, but it isn't. At least on my car. I will try again after I change my shirt, this one is soaking wet. Unreal that they make these so hard to service. By the way the old filters look like yours. Is there an easier way to line the bottom one up for insertion. UPDATE.... Just got it in...I was on my stomach trying to do this...you can't get the right angle or see what you are doing that way. I turned over on my back and was able to see what I was doing. Pushed a bundle of wires also that was in the way and got it in. Damn, you make it look so easy, but the tip is you must be on your back to install these. I took a photo thought I could upload it to show you how black the filters were. They were never changed in the 16 years we own the car. We kept getting oily substance on the inside glass windows and I had a feeling it was from the air conditioner. Thanks for the video..Whew!!!!

Yikes, that sounds like it was a hell of an experience. First time I did it, I was thinking the same thing and it was during a very hot summer day. This is one of the craziest filter locations I've seen. Most modern cars keep it behind the glove box. Not sure how to make it easier, you may have some debris inside the compartment that's preventing the filter from going in. I also try to insert the filter while it's still bent in half, then once the first part goes in, I click it into one piece and continue.

If the wires there are the same as my '97, they disconnect at the front/firewall side. If you didn't scrape and vacuum out the space first much of the problem at the bottom was likely that you were just pushing against pile of debris.

Good video, but my car 1997 es didnt have any filters at all! But trying to get the guard plate off I broke one of the fasteners, and trying to get the upper filter in was a sweat ordeal with a stiff bundle of cables in the way, but got it in. But then it wouldnt stay up in order for me to get the lower panel in!! I tried holding it up with a long screwdriver but theres not enough room then to manipulate the lower panel into place. After trying for 15 minutes and sweating to death, i gave up. Took the upper out, and put in the lower filter and just closed everything up. This was a real bitch of a project! So after 21 years of no filter, now I have half a filter! Ill never do this again!! Lexus, you blew it on this design! Crappy system.

Hey J, I'm sorry to hear you had such a hard time. I know the feeling. This filter system is a real pain in the butt to access and replace. If you didn't have anything inside, chances are your compartment is filled with leaves and dirt, just like what happened to mine. This debris may prevent the filters from going in nicely. I recommend using a toothbrush and a vacuum to scoop some of that stuff out. In order to keep the upper filter in place, try holding it by its tab. I find that it's best to sort of push the top filter all the way to the top until you feel resistance. Another reason you may had an issue is the filter itself. Did you use the same WIX model I showed in the video?

Same here man. Same exact shit happened with me. I just gave up and only did the bottom one after fucking with it for an hour. My body was sore from prying and jiggling the filter trying to get both in. I have a mercedes s500 and this fucking car is atleast 5 times harder to work on, cheaper yeah, but wayyyy more annoying and difficult.

I am planning to try it. Hope I would not face the problem you had.

Should I buy a 99 es 300 with 45k miles for 3500? Looks as clean as yours

Absolutely! That’s the first year with the upgraded engine head that had variable valve timing. Same exterior design as the 97-98. Mine is a 98. With such low miles, I would be looking for records of all fluids being changed and all rubber components being replaced.

Last year on September, I bought 2000 model now with 38200 miles on it. Though I spend little bit more to fix it, I love it and hope it would pay the price worth.

They are from a 2006 Lexus GS300. 17" rim with a 215/50/17 tire. No spacers or modifications needed.
